Power Kite Forum

Introduction from a newbie in Chesapeake, VA.

clintopher - 16-5-2008 at 04:01 AM

Hello all,

I recently got into kiting with a Beamer TSR 3.6. I've got to say this is a pretty cool thing you guys do. My primary goal is to get out on the water but it's nice to know that loads of fun can be had on land as well. So anyway, just wanted to tell everyone hello.

Anyone here in southeastern VA or northeastern NC?

Clint

Sthrasher38 - 16-5-2008 at 08:09 AM

Welcome to the forum!

clintopher - 16-5-2008 at 03:37 PM

I usually fly at the Chesapeake park just because it's close, but it's gusty there and can be irritating. I've flown the kite at First Landing park a few times and really enjoyed it there. I've yet to go to the ocean front.

Hey guys, I am interested in getting into kite surfing, I saw some guys down at the jetty during that storm we had a few days back.... friggin' amazing, that did it for me.

I am from Virginia Beach, i've grown up on these waters sailing catamarans and small boats, surfing, and fishing, now mostly kayak fishing out of my Ocean Kayak Prowler 13 I bought a few years back.

Anyways, I just put in an order to kittyhawkkites.com for a Rush II 300 Pro (the 3.0 trainer with the 3rd line on the trailing edge) and i'm stoked, I can't wait to get it. I am in need of some places in the area (open fields, big beaches, etc) without too many people around. Right now I am thinking Mt. Trashmore, or the oceanfront. Is this kite safe to use on the water?

Silvereagle you mentioned going to the demo day, what do you paddle? I am interested in doing a little kite yaking when I learn, is my P13 suitable? If not, i'm going to buy the WS Ripper eventually for my wife to paddle (and something I can surf on the family trips to the beach) Will the kite
have enough power to make it worth the effort? If it's not too hard to do, it'll make the trips to the 1st island a breeeeeeze :D

clintopher - 17-5-2008 at 02:03 AM

Yeah, Fort Story has the best real estate , but First Landing isn't bad, especially early in the morning when nobody's out there.

Silvereagle, I'll be at First Landing today as well. There's a beach catamaran race there this weekend and I'm helping out in the committee boat. This is the first time I've ever participated in anything like this so I'm not exactly sure where we'll be (over to the left past the building in the parking lot I think) and I don't even know what type of boat the committee boat is. BUT, I do know there's going to be three bouys set in a line, not sure how far apart, and the committee boat should be near the one in the center. I'm guessing it'll also be the only power boat amidst a bunch of hobies and the like. Paddle on over if you get the chance. I'll be tied up until around 4pm or so.

Sthrasher38 - 17-5-2008 at 08:13 AM

Welcome to the forum Rockstar. I am not sure about the rush being a water kite But keep the questions comming someone will help answer them. Great forum here.

silvereaglekiter - 18-5-2008 at 09:52 AM

Its was a beautiful day for sailing and kiting but I decided not to kite on the beach with all the people around. Its a shame that Fort Story is hogging all of the really good beach. First Landing is good and hard packed but a little narrow. Plenty wide at low tide for a buggy though.:singing: We watch the catamarans most of the afternoon. I asked around but you must have been on the big boat. Got plenty of pics. if you need them for anything. They are on my flicker page. Sucks that the wind died about mid race. Go figure that as soon as everyone got out of the water the wind picked up again. It was fun to watch the few guys who went back out and rip up the bay.:wow::thumbup:

Trying to combine a kite and a kayak is what got me started in all this insanity. You definitely need a out rigger or really deep keel to counteract the side pull from the kite. (I am still trying to do this for my kayak). Upgrading to an L.E.I would be the way to go too. Open foils you might be able to relaunch if you crash, IF it doesn’t fill with water but that’s a long shot.

Overall we had a great day on the water and on the beach. And will definitely be going back to First Landing.:yes::yes:

clintopher - 18-5-2008 at 10:10 AM

Yeah I was out on the big boat helping with flags and keeping time. The wind was a let down during the middle of the day, but oh well...no sweat.

So where are you? Where do you fly your kites?

Sthrasher38 - 18-5-2008 at 01:02 PM

Welcome to the forum also clintopher. Lot's of new members lately. thats a good thing.

clintopher - 18-5-2008 at 03:05 PM

Where are you flying in Newport News?

Clint

WELDNGOD - 18-5-2008 at 04:06 PM

Clint , I got a spot out at grandview beach that I fly at.

silvereaglekiter - 18-5-2008 at 07:16 PM

Hi Clint I live in Capron west of Suffolk. My flying spots are mostly farm fields but with spring planting session those are out the window. :( Add to that the cruddy wind this far inland I don’t get much quality flying in as I would like. I have started keeping a map of spots I have flown or possible spots to try. I try to add as much info as possible on each site. I’ll add Chesapeake park to the list I have climbed the tower next door to that park dozens of times It never dawned on me to fly there.

Yeah, the farmers probably wouldn't get a real kick out of buggying around threre fields this time of year. Maybe between now and next sowing season we can come up with a kite powered plow.LOL

Your map is pretty cool. I'll send you spots that I go to so you can fill it if you want. Also might want to put weldngod's spot on there if it's cool with him.

Here's my list of "places to go" so I'm not sure how good they are as far as land space, crowds, and such:

False Cape State park

North Landing (Atlantic side)...in case you didn't know, if you take that whole section of land, put a square on top of it, give the NE corner of it to the Army, the leftovers are the State Park.

North end of Virginia Beach

Sandbridge Beach

I'm sure there are other parks around too, but haven't scouted enough to know anything about them.

Clint

WELDNGOD - 19-5-2008 at 02:23 PM

Clint before you go posting my spot, you need to read my post called Big trouble 4 me.It's in bans and legal section. I still go there but it is just a matter of time now that its warm.

clintopher - 19-5-2008 at 02:54 PM

My bad, definitely don't want to advertise then. Good luck with longevity.

Clint

WELDNGOD - 19-5-2008 at 05:15 PM

But I got a few other prospects that will be candidates to share. That beach is about to become off limits cause of tree huggers. But if you or SEK wanna come out to it before they shut it down give me a pm and we could go and enjoy some onshore blow ( hopefully)or maybe westish(2nd choice for this location). But for static fun any wind will work.

WELDNGOD - 19-5-2008 at 05:28 PM

Things are lookin up, I used to be the lone kiter. Now there are a few Tidewater kiters. Now if we can all get together somewhere and fly together.

clintopher - 19-5-2008 at 05:51 PM

It isn't forecasted to blow out of the east over there for the whole week. I wonder if that's a winter thing? Plenty of west winds though.

Clint

WELDNGOD - 19-5-2008 at 06:08 PM

actually last summer I got alot of east wind. seems to come in the late afternoon though. West is ok but you gotta keep you kite up ,if you get too low the turbs from the sand dunes will luff ya'. Then you fall in the chessie bay:flaming: I hate washin my kites;) Get up with me, I got a bag full of kites to fly! We usually fish for Cobia and fly kites all summer out there.I have not been officially told not to fly, but it's in the worx. They gotta make a law that says I can't, right now there isn't one.Maybe the people who bicycle out there will help fight it. Anyway let me know if ya want to meet out there, but lets keep it on the DL. know what I mean?

silvereaglekiter - 19-5-2008 at 06:40 PM

II’ll be going to Nags Head for a kite fest on June 14 - 15. I’m hoping to talk some others in to joining me. See thread http://www.powerkiteforum.com/viewthread.php?tid=6099&pa... for all the info. Other then that say when and ware and I can probably make it, :cool2: the perks of being my own boss.:P

clintopher - 20-5-2008 at 03:20 PM

I'm not sure when I'll be able to get up to the peninsula...maybe weekend after next or the following weekend. I'm definitely down for the kite festival though.

Another point of interest...this is a link to kiteboard/sailboard launches. It could prove to be useful for places to fly kites.

Welcome to the forum... I too bought a 3m ish kite to get started on the kitesurfing path. I got a bit sidetracked, as I have had so much fun with these kites that I cant seem to stop playing with them, and adding to my quiver.

Now that I have it all together, I cant break away from work to go kiting. It'll have to wait a few weeks more.

Welcome again, and be safe out there!
