What's a guy to look for in a kiter-friendly lifejacket? One more suited to kayaking / paddling or skiing / wake boarding or is there a difference?

I think the biggest issue is that it needs to work with your harness. My wife wears one of those neoprene lifejackets and it fits nicely above her
seat harness. If you wanted to wear a waist harness you'd have to come up with something else. there's a guy here who wears an inflatable PFD (uses
a CO2 cartridge to fill the jacket). Not sure I'd recommend it, but it's another idea.

A kayaking pfd has much more flotation and it rides higher on your body than a ski jacket. It also doesn't offer the impact protection that a ski
jacket does. The ski jacket would come down jut below your waist to your hips.

Not many PFD's accomidate a waist harness. I have and O'Neill Vapour Comp. for sale. It's an impact vest. It provdes floatation but isn't PFD
approved. I don't think it's designed to keep your head above water.
Canadian tire had one of the neoprene type that worked well. Not sure if they are out this year but they are the best bang for buck !
I just picked up a Dakine Vest / harness combo.
