Am I Crazy....

bcooper79 - 17-6-2008 at 09:46 AM

I just stepped outside for a quick smoke break at work and its mega windy right now. Big storm comming in and its gusting to about 10 mph. First thing I thought when that wind hit me was "Oh man I need a kite right about now" lol

My wife thinks I'm crazy

BeamerBob - 17-6-2008 at 11:11 AM

Big Storm-BAD with deteriorating dangerous situation possible.
10 mph winds- good. While it lasts.

NPWfever - 17-6-2008 at 11:31 AM

I think you need to stop smoking right about now, if you want to live to see that kite

Its funny you mention me needing to quit smoking...as both me and my wife smoke. We were talking today about quitting...as we have tried several times in the past, and failed. We decided to come up with a "reward system"

Its a 4 week system and for every week that we go without one, we get something. And if we go all 4 weeks, we get a BIG something. So, as it turns out...I am in need of my first kite and trying to convince my wife to allow that much money be spent on a "toy" is proving to be somewhat difficult. So, my 4 week prize...is my first kite!! woot!!

bcooper79,
Good plan on the stopping method a friend whom buggies with me is quitting he is getting a big bonus from his work but the real reason is it makes him stop the buggy and land the kite and take off his bucket just to smoke... That is the best reason to quit it cuts into kite time! :spin:

Did you mean 10 mph or 100 mph?

A

bcooper79 - 17-6-2008 at 12:35 PM

Nah, it was only 10mph. I guess it felt stronger. Its funny, I never payed as much attention to wind as I do now...lol And I dont even have my kite yet.

I find myself constantly looking up at the tops of trees ... lol.

dylanj423 - 17-6-2008 at 01:18 PM

Crazy... yep. I know the feeling. Checkout wunderground.com, then click the wundermap link. ikitesurf.com, too. These are great wind observing websites.

I work at a restaurant, and there is a tree right in front of the window.... seems like its always blowin when I'm there. Its torture.

Bladerunner - 17-6-2008 at 02:28 PM

Crazy like an addict looking for his fix !!!!
Welcme to the wacky world of power kites !!!!:singing:

crosshatch - 17-6-2008 at 06:55 PM

If it helps your case any... Kiting helped me quit and stay quit (comin' up on around two years I think, but I stopped paying attention after several weeks).... So maybe this first kite purchase could count as a freebie...and your 4th week reward could be like..oh I dunno... More kites? :)
Once I got bit by the kiting bug, the nicotine addiction had no chance.
Wind addiction is, without question, the stronger of the two.

Good Luck to you! Any ideas on what your first kite will be?

I would really like to go with a Flexi Rage, but I cant justify a 500.00 kite just yet. So I am going to go with a Flexi Sting 3.3m. I am also going to buy my 8yr old a Big Buzz at the same time. When we fly, we will find someone to watch our 4 yr old (mimi and papa I'm sure) that way my wife can take tons of pics of us. Got a Rebel Xt that we need to put to good use. Will probably get a new lens for that as well for better distance shots.

Thanks for the encouragement guys!!!

WELDNGOD - 18-6-2008 at 04:58 AM

you will love the sting very stable and fun, I use the wifes 1.7 to landboard with in high winds

macboy - 18-6-2008 at 09:00 AM

And you'll equally love the Rage once you get it (and you will).

Good luck on the smoking - It's a bugger. Took me three tries but I did it. The patch was the solution for me. I still remember the day I forgot to put on a fresh one. Half way through the day I thought, "Wow. I'm done, I'm a non smoker!" Because I've been there, done that I'll never bag on a smoker - I know how evil the addiction is, even creepier that its a chemical addiction as proved by a little chunk of plastic feeding you through your skin. Eerie.

Welcome to the forum!

WELDNGOD - 18-6-2008 at 04:14 PM

you know why smoking is so hard to quit? all humans are born with a hand to mouth instinct ,it ensures that we will eat.just watch a baby sometime, what is the first test they give things they pick up. yep ,right in the mouth. then you go and develop a habit on top of that instinct and what you have is a really hard to quit behavior. I quit cold turkey, and you have to make up your mind that you don't want to die coughing and chokin for your last breath of air. good luck, maybe knowin about the instinct thing will help you deal with the first 2 weeks. after that it's easy.I thought it was stupid the way I kept doin the every 20 minute pat down for my smokes and lighter.:P

bcooper79 - 23-6-2008 at 08:24 AM

hehe...thanks for all the encouragement guys. After talking with the wife, she agrees that quitting is a huge deal for both of us and has agreed to splurge and go for the Rage right off. So, in a month, I will be the proud owner of a brand new FlexiFoil Rage 4.7 in the Midnight color scheme.

acampbell - 23-6-2008 at 08:42 AM

Great kite and a nice reward for quitting the smokes. Money saved will pay for the kite in the end, plus a few more.

WELDNGOD - 23-6-2008 at 11:40 AM

order a AAA kit from flexifoil( 40 $) ,but well worth it.It gives you the ability to adjust angle of attack .I can fly my rage 4.7 when others are puttin theirs away

bcooper79 - 24-6-2008 at 05:37 AM

Well, Day 1 is over....and I survived. Smoking for 10+years and then just quitting cold turkey. I think I am over the Nic Fit aspect...now its just getting over the thoughts of wanting one because thats what I have done for the last 10 years. I think there is a lot of truth to what WLDNGOD had said about the "hand to mouth" habit. I was telling my wife this morning that I wanted one, but not because I was edgy or felt like I was gonna go off or anything. I just wanted one because thats what I do every morning. That has subsided now. I just hope the rest of the day goes ok. I think if I can get past the first 48 hours, I should be able to kick this thing. Thanks again for all the encouragement guys!!!

BeamerBob - 24-6-2008 at 10:03 AM

You go man. That is huge to get that monkey off your back and bank account! We're behind your effort for sure. Keeping us posted keeps you accountable too. Start a unique thread and hit it every day. We will be on your case if you don't post and you won't want to post that you had "just one". Might keep you on the wagon.
