bamboo handles

silvereaglekiter - 20-6-2008 at 11:18 AM

Well in anticipation of my new NPW from NPWfever I figured i'd make some custom handles.

Scrounged up some bamboo flooring ,glued 2 planks together to form a blank, then I cut that in to strips to laminate together

this form broke:no: the new one is steel:duh:

if the glue holds these things should lift a truck

NPWfever - 20-6-2008 at 03:31 PM

Hey man, trying to get that NPW done, that thing should be sexy, but the fabric store still hasn't goten any fabric in! If anyone knows where I can get ripstop in these colors?
Brown(ish)
Gray
Orange
OH and are those harbor freight wheelbarrow tires on ur buggy? Cuz that's whats on mine, and they look like the same.

silvereaglekiter - 20-6-2008 at 03:32 PM

silvereaglekiter - 20-6-2008 at 03:37 PM

hay nick I found these folks the other dayhang-em-high fabrics right up the road from me:P

NPWfever - 20-6-2008 at 08:07 PM

I'll take a look at that, about $1 more per yard though, and shipping, it is coated though.......

silvereaglekiter - 20-6-2008 at 08:13 PM

1 down 1 to go
still alot of sanding to go  ran out of glue:(

(sweet the pic worked this time thanks for the pointers f0rgiv3n)

clintopher - 21-6-2008 at 07:04 AM

That handle looks great. Did you use vertical grain or horizontal grain flooring? A lot of traditional bow builders use bamboo in their bow limbs but only the vertical grain...the horizontal won't stand up to the stresses. Not exactly sure how that would translate to kite handles since they don't, or at least aren't designed to flex, but the vertical is definitely stronger.

sodfarmkiter - 21-6-2008 at 07:06 AM

The first one looks sweet! How long is it?

NPWfever - 21-6-2008 at 07:46 AM

Ok wow, you and screwy need too work out some special edition, with his "secret feature" and your bamboo handles!

crosshatch - 21-6-2008 at 09:50 AM

Dude... that looks positively awesome. :)

SCREWYFITS - 21-6-2008 at 06:31 PM

Very trick... Impressive... they should work as good as they look... and the Screwy secret feature will probably work on these handles nicely... It's great to have other DIYer's here on the forum...

overall length is 18 inches I may shorten it to match the other handle if needed. I plan on varnishing them:cool:

the flooring was horizontal grain but i cut strips from the edge so the alignment in the handles is vertical

there is absolutely no flex at all :cool2: love it when a plan comes together

SCREWYFITS let me in on the Screwy secret feature and i will see if i can incorporate it in the design :wink2:

silvereaglekiter - 22-6-2008 at 08:26 PM

close up of the handle.

second one is in the form

As they stand now the lower end feels to heavy for a standard kite they mite put to much pressure on the brake lines. should work fine on the NPW though

SCREWYFITS - 22-6-2008 at 10:01 PM

Looking real nice, you should be O.K. if you hold your handles tight and add a longer break line so you can have more adjustment... you might be able to hollow the bottom end out for weight, being that you don't have that much stress from the break lines...

You gonna put a varnish and/or a padded grip on it? I think varnished up would look super classy... and probably be just fine for smaller kites...:singing:

NPWfever - 22-6-2008 at 11:20 PM

There has go to be some sort of clear grip type thing.

BeamerBob - 23-6-2008 at 04:32 AM

Those really look nice. The special screwy feature will work fine on them too. Although a padding would be functional, it would be a shame to cover up much of the wood grain.

silvereaglekiter - 23-6-2008 at 07:43 AM

you guys are reading my mind:lol: I plan on using the varnish I used a on my hiking stick. still no luck finding clear padding though I thought about finding a cheep wood grain foam bat

bcooper79 - 23-6-2008 at 08:12 AM

So are you taking requests for these yet?

silvereaglekiter - 23-6-2008 at 08:32 AM

lets see how they (handle) first
:lol:pun intended:lol:

PHREERIDER - 23-6-2008 at 08:39 AM

those look great, i have couple boxes of both bambo and maple flooring. engineered lam.

i think a custom deck is in the mind mill already.

the bend in the laminate? moisture, steam + tension and weight

i have seen a long board with a nice bend with laminated tension process, but getting the short end bends seems (for truck mounts) difficult. any suggestions?

silvereaglekiter - 23-6-2008 at 10:30 AM

it mite work with the engineered lam 1/4 flooring figure the angle for the end and do a test run :puzzled: id go with lots n lots of :flaming:steam

I started out with solid 3/4 with don't bend
hope it works out for you

(added note sumo glue :karate: dose not like soaking wet wood so far i have had to reglue both handles second handle is in the form for the second time:megan: )

_____ - 23-6-2008 at 11:01 AM

Lookin good Nick  So when you gonna start mass production? :D

silvereaglekiter - 24-6-2008 at 01:34 PM

set's shaped up

SCREWYFITS does that jell handle grip you use come in something clear or translucent :?: and what size is your kevlar line?

what do I need to do to accommodate the super secret feature;)

WELDNGOD - 24-6-2008 at 01:38 PM

good job Nick:thumbup:

f0rgiv3n - 24-6-2008 at 02:24 PM

Great job man, they look beautiful.

BeamerBob - 24-6-2008 at 06:56 PM

OK, for the secret feature, the first thing you need to do is drill your holes in the top and bottom of the handles................Oh wait a minute. That's still a secret isn't it. DOH! Sorry I couldn't resist. :saint:

silvereaglekiter - 24-6-2008 at 07:17 PM

gota do that any way:duh::lol:

BeamerBob - 24-6-2008 at 07:22 PM

Well, I caught myself before I went too far. I can't spill the beans before all the patents are in place.

_____ - 25-6-2008 at 09:31 AM

Are you planning to round the top and bottoms of the handles?

silvereaglekiter - 25-6-2008 at 07:09 PM

2nd coat of sanding sealer is on :singing:
My local bike shop couldn't get clear gel grip tape :( but I have had a better idea and I to will keep it a secret feature :ninja: :frog:

I kept all the holes as small as I could and eased the squared off ends some I wish i could get them in the lathe I would put a ball on each end :wow:

NPWfever - 25-6-2008 at 10:25 PM

Next set, lathe them, then bend them. I want a lathe....

silvereaglekiter - 26-6-2008 at 09:53 AM

getten closer 1st coat of varnish is on:spin:

silvereaglekiter - 27-6-2008 at 05:44 PM

Hey Silver,
Sorry I have been out of town and busy... I did come across some handlebar tape that was clear but it wasn't gel, but a cork substance and the brand slips my mind... if I can figure it out I'll let you know 4 sure... as far as incorporating my secret feature, you are on track... your handles will work just fine... also my kevlar is 3mm I believe... used for spear gun tether line... so far it's proven bullet proof but not dog proof

By the way, them are some classy looking handles... Great job...
Question; are those dots on the sides holes? or plugs of some sort or is that part of the secret? shhhhhh...

the holes are fore the knot in the handle lines.

silvereaglekiter - 2-7-2008 at 12:40 PM

all finished ---------------- mostly ----------------

close up of the padded leather grips :wow: If had to cover some of it up I mite as well do it in style

I may do some test flights with the pepper since Nick/NPWfever Is STILL working on The Silver Eagle

They turned out pretty decent I think

NPWfever - 2-7-2008 at 12:54 PM

Hey man, believe me I feel bad I haven't gotten that out yet, the place the fabric store orders from went out of bussiness, so they need to find a new supplier, I've been looking for an alternative but this is the only place that sells ripstop I can find, all the rest just sell cheerleader nylon, if it gets even a pinhole, the entire thing can tear in half. If anyone has any fabric they can drop let me know.

And again sorry sillvereagle!

silvereaglekiter - 2-7-2008 at 01:09 PM

Its no big deal :lol:I,m jest messen with you:smug:

WELDNGOD - 2-7-2008 at 02:45 PM

hey ,NPW have you tried goodwinds kites. they have all kinds of kite building supplies.
