First big jump!!

dgkid78 - 13-7-2008 at 03:52 PM

So today the wind was 15-18 mph and I havn't flown my kite in 2 weeks....so i was up at 8am to catch the wind at 12mph to get adjusted to the high winds after 10am.....LOL don't ask i just feel safer  so i call my friend and have him come out with me and take some pictures and video of me doin some jumps with my board. wind is picking up, cause my jumps are get higher and easier to get with my Montana...normally i only get little hops cause i am still learning the curve..so my friend is down a little ways down the field and i head towards him. Nail a good over 6ft jump (for me this is huge) and get carried what feels like i am on a cloud for nice lift and put down ever so gently after redirecting....I did this about 10ft away from my friend right in front of him (I know it was about 6ft cause my friend is 6ft tall and i went just about over his head....and what the heck was he doing????? he was looking at the dammm ocean...ugh the one time i need someone to take a photo or video and he is looking at birds having a feeding frenzy with the fisherman throwing bread into the ocean

Awwwwwwwww man!!! THat sounds awesome! Obviously you were on the board right? Wow that's awesome dude! Figures he'd be looking the other direction, hahahaha:lol:

Hey i know you're learning (and so am I), and I have a Question for you. Do you go one way (say with your left foot forward((regular)) ) and then when you get to the end of your run go back the opposite way with your right foot forward(goofy)? Or do you ride backside? with your back facing the kite and your left foot still forward? I am really not getting anywhere with my boarding all of my rides have been "a one way" trip and i can't get back to where I started unless I walk it back.

Actually i am left handed and this might sound weird but i am more comfortable going goofy (right foot????) and jumping that way. when i go regular (left foot?? ) i feel weird but i ain't off balance or anything and have no trouble at all getting back and forth. I do however get scared of jumping at the moment goin left foot foward (regular). I only manage small hops and get a little off balance landing. I actually never tried backside, i think its because my chickenloop has managed to pop out a couple times just doing normal stuff so it never crossed my mind trying backside. hope this answers your question.

From my water skiing background, I know that your feet don't always know the orientation of your hands. I happen to be right/right but the rest of my family is left foot forward and right handed. My younger son can hop on his skateboard riding either way without really thinking about it but seems to slightly prefer left foot forward. Riding "switch" just comes from practice and making yourself do it the uncomfortable direction. I would rather ride a board switch than toeside. Tridude suggested to me to ride about 20 feet in one direction and then use the kite to stop yourself and go back to your starting point. This will prevent your ride out of sight with the walk of shame to return. this would be similar to doing 50 foot figure 8s in a buggy to get your turns down. Add to your distance as you get more comfortable riding switch stance. You will always prefer your natural direction, but you can minimize the gap between left and right foot forward with practice.
