Strop line attachment

BeamerBob - 1-8-2008 at 06:16 AM

There was some discussion several days ago (can't find that thread) about how to attach a strop to a handle. This is the way I came up with to attach my strop line to a handle. My first attempts at using my climbing harness placed the pulley almost a foot from my body. A loop in the strop with its knot down the strop line reduced my usable strop length. This attachment method may not be as secure as a loop in theory but it has never hinted at coming undone. My strop line is somewhat stiff so I guess that makes it less likely to undo itself. Once it is snugged up, further tension just pulls the knot in tighter. You can see it very hi-res in my pic link in the signature.

This one is snugged up tight.

This one is loose to help you see how it goes on if the tight one wasn't clear.

Thats a pretty cool idea man. I have a question though about the strop line. How long should it be? Mine is about 20" and felt comfy once attatched to my harness but Im just checking :)

That has to be a personal preference. You want it long enough that you don't run out of strop before you were able to turn the kite as hard as you wanted but not so long that to turn the kite you can't reach the handle on the long side of the strop. Your rig length and arm length factor into it as well as how much input your kite needs/can stand.

That makes sense.

A picture is worth a 1000 words!

Very helpful, thanks

I remember that other thread, the picture makes it crystal clear! I'll be giving it a try, as it creates a nice long length of usable strop. I use a climbing harness as well and it is difficult to minimize the length of the rig, hard to get it down to less than 6" from my belly under load.

quick release swivel

Very elegant Bobby- essentially a larkshead without the loop. Nice.

Wow, the teacher says the student's work is elegant! What a compliment. Thanks. This is just that mother of invention thing working.
