dbbb 2008

As most of you have heard by now Galveston has been hit by hurricane Ike. While the winds were only Cat 2 strength, the storm surge tides were much higher than usual due to the storm's large overall size. As a result Galveston and most of the upper Texas coast has been decimated.

The latest assessment is that it will be a couple months before the island will be reopened due to major damage to the gas and electric infrastructure feeding the island. Indeed most of our beaches are missing in action and it will be awhile before we see how much returns on it's own and how much Galveston Parks will be able to restore. Following is a current satellite link showing the damage done...

With the above in mind, it is suggested you not make concrete plans to attend dbbb just yet. We are brainstorming to come up with an alternative location, but to tell you the truth it doesn't look good. Hotel space is at a premium throughout Texas and Louisiana and will likely remain so for months due to the large number of people that have completely lost their homes. If we can put something together, camping will likely be involved.

We are thankful that most of our buggy buddies have weathered the storm relatively well and offer condolences to those that have suffered greater losses. We are looking forward to the time we can all get together again. Lets hope it can happen sooner than later!

Yea... really tore Watergate up. Which Marina did you move your boat to during the storm?

I'd hope by T-day that the island will be up and running, although on a limited capacity. Those camping will be fine, but will be limited hotel availability for out of towners and those who do not like tents. Even a hundred miles north of the coast hotels are few and far between (at least the nice ones), but that should start getting better as people get back to normal.

I thought I had it rough.... until a guy I work with told me his story. Out of power for 12 days, and finally gets it back. His wife lit some scented candles to help make the house smell better and ran to pick up their kid from school. They suspect the cat knocked over one of the candles, and burned most of the house down.

We plan on camping and will be joining anyone else who chooses to do so. :) :) :)

Is it going to be held ON Thanksgiving day? I will be there if my Dad can make it. I hat to leave him alone in Houston over the holiday.

centex_buggier - 30-9-2008 at 08:29 PM

Usually the event is the entire week with most people showing up the evening before Thankgiving and leaving on the Sunday after. I am pretty sure I'm going unless the beach report is really bad.

We are thinking about a watered down event. There probably won't be much hotel space available, so most will be camping on the beach. Likely at San Luis Pass rather than the usual East Beach.

I hope to be there... will probably only be able to make it on Turkey Day, though. Hopefully people will be able to come and the conditions will be good.

Come on down... and don't leave your Dad home alone on T-day. Bring him to the feast as well.

I just read an article in the Galveston paper that stated the water quality in the gulf of mexico was back to normal. They were not allowing swimers in the water till this past Monday because they were still cleaning up storm debris. So this is good news.

WHo knows... by then East beach might be useable and empty. We'll just have to wait and see. I'm going to try and make a beach run soon myself.

Went and got my cartag today. The Clerk lives near here and her family is living in their garage as the hurricane ate their house as well. The area is down to 5 digits now of people without power...

kitemaker4 - 3-10-2008 at 04:03 PM

Hey Steve

What is the car tag for?

Yeah... you know, sort of like hunting... have to tag them. (I meant the sticker for the windshield... thelittle one we used to put on license plates).

We've got the burn pot cranked up in the back yard. Chillin out around the campfire tonight in the back yard. Have satellite TV and wireless internet to Terry's trailer/yard/house now. Think there is just enough room left to run the land line for the phone tomorrow.

Talked with insurance again today. Final estimate is at the home office for approval. When I asked what the ballpark figure was, guy just said that he did'nt remember off the top of his head... just that it was fairly large.

Maybe tomorrow I'll start to cut up the 40~50 ft oak lying on the ground. It's on the chain link fence and dogs like to walk up it to look around, but it would be better served as DBBB firewood. And it took out three more trees behind us like dominoes....
