Our own little "Buggy Bash"

macboy - 25-9-2008 at 08:50 PM

No - I don't have little kite syndrome - I think I duplicated the Blurr label to change it to the Rage but didn't change the size. It's a 4.7:crazy:

macboy - 26-9-2008 at 09:08 AM

!? Dry lake in Alberta ?!

Bladerunner - 26-9-2008 at 04:37 PM

Right on EH ! :frog:

Flying kites is about the greatest thing in the world but flying with Bud's makes it a whole lot more fun ! Learning from each other is going to boost you boys into the next level fast :wee:

Looks like you are the master of those Coyotes Macboy :cool2: I can't wait to get out and ride with you all.

VEGAS is 1/2 way between Van and Edmonton :wink2: You should start planning to meet us at NABX :bigok:

Wolf Wolfee ( aka Saint ) also mentioned this dry lake in Alberta ?

Thanks for that Ken! You just cleared a little Friday Funk that was threatening to come into the weekend with me after work! I can't wait to tell the wife the good news. We thought it was farther away than that!

The Dry Lake is called Tide Lake, not far from Suffield. I can email you the google earth coordinates. It is a bit remote. Some of the spots of the lake are better than others. The wet spring made it so that there was a lot more scrub brush than what might be usual. Another dry lake much more to the south is Pakowki lake. One part of it is a slough that is the first go to ice in this part of the country. The slough is so shallow that even if you went through you'd only be up to your hips.

I think that Big Lake which is just north of Edmonton is one of the first skating spots up there. Too bad it is 6 hours to get up there....

With harvest season well under way - I've found some spots closer to home that just needed to be "harvested". The farmers are usually just amused about asking to take a 3 wheeled gizmo powered by a kite around on their field. I'm sure if you take a drive you might find some nice spots up there. Luckily we don't have trees down here...

PrairieWind - 26-9-2008 at 08:19 PM

There are some other "dry lakes" closer to saskatchewan.

The coordinates of the middle of tide lake are...
50 degrees 25' 46.77" N
111 degrees 22' 17.37" W

You'll get an idea of the remote aspect of things. If it was an arid desert, not just semi-arid then it would be dry like Ivanpah dry. But because it is semi arid there is enough scrub on it to make it not worthy of going for the speed record.

Pakowki Lake is the other option. Part is just the slough, most of it is dry. If you look on a road map of alberta it makes pakowki lake look huge. Only part of it is wet, most of it is dry. There is an alkali lake bed that had a better surface than Tide Lake, but a bit more remote.

There is Sand riding options in southern Alberta... at St. Mary's Reservoir when they drain it toward the end of the summer it is mostly sand with a puddle in the middle.

Google Earth St. Mary's reservior and zoom in and you'll see what I mean.

Cheers from the sunny south.

There is one british army buggy guy at the british army training area at suffield - he's been so busy that he hasn't had time to fly his kites yet.

I'll be getting him out on the snow when Prince Harry has finished his exercises.

NABX 09. Amen!!:wee:
.:karate: gotta get there

Bladerunner - 26-9-2008 at 08:23 PM

Just from the bit I saw I can PROMISE YOU that you will be running over 30mph on the dry lakes while feeling as comfortable and safe as you would on skis, Macboy.
You MUST all get it on your Holiday plans ! Plenty for the wives to do ! Primm is a lot of fun with 3 casinos, rides and a huge outlet mall. Vegas is just up the road ! Rooms + food are UBER cheap and we got great seat sales on the plane last year. Probably one of the cheapest and most fun holidays you can imagine

I here houses are a great deal in Vegas now! We should all pitch in and buy a Canadian kite house in the desert ! Should work! Being 1/2 way between Van and Edmonton . Or Medicine Hat. :wink2::wink2:

ripsessionkites - 27-9-2008 at 12:42 AM

lol, yah vegas isnt far ... but going to be expensive this year. I've been working around the clock talking with different flights at YVR, asking if they enforce this extra lugguage charge. hoping my YVR Pass will cut us some cost.

prairewind, thx for the info ... we have to meet up soon either there or at nabx.

revpaul, ready to get that 3.8 dusty??? :alien:

we really shouldnt tell our wifes/gfs about the brand name outlet mall ... i'd like to have extra money to buy more kites. ROFL.

see you in April 2009 @ Nabx

oh yah, nice video

EAT MY DUST!!!

revpaul - 27-9-2008 at 11:03 AM
