details? weather, wind, buggy speed, who went with you, come on don't hold back.sunset-Jim - 24-10-2008 at 11:39 AM
It was a great trip, although be it a short one. Was still well worth it.
We arrived on the lake bed about 5am and was trying to find Dave Grimm in the dark to no avail. So we just parked it and as it was just starting to
get light out, the wind was blowing a steady 8-10 or so. Funny how we were so exhausted just 20 minutes prior to arriving but then finally arriving,
being awed by the beauty and with the wind blowing... nothing but excitement.
Eli was suggesting I change my name now to SUNRISE-jim, but... there's no place like home, I'll stick with sunset thank you...smile
After the sun did come up saw a trailer off over yonder and buggied over to it only to find Dave with his head sticking out the window to greet us.
After all that searching in the dark, he was only about a half mile from us. And since the playa is ONLY 7mi by 12mi, not too shabby.
The wind did pick up later in the day although it was rather gusty and dust devils galore. At one point I saw one in front of me and approaching so I
turned around, only to find 2 of em right behind me and now I'm going right into em. Since 1 is better than 2, I made another quick turn around.
Managed to get quite a few runs in the 40's and topping out at 48.9 while Eli managed to sneak in a 58 or 59 I believe. What I liked even more though
was getting in almost 70 miles for the day. Boy that lake bed is HUGE! And what scenery. Pictures to follow.
The wind even provided some excitement late that night. It would be all nice n quiet, then you hear what sounded like a freight train approaching,
and then all of a sudden BAM get hit by a huge gust of wind. We all thought at any time our tents and trailers were going over. I can't even count
how many times that repeated itself but it was thru most of the night.
Unfortunately it blew itself out and for tuesday and wednesday the wind was pretty much gone.
Hot springs, infamous hamburger and shakes in Fields and then time to hit the road back and thinking about when to plan the next trip back.USA_Eli_A - 24-10-2008 at 11:54 AM
Yeah buddy, I have some pics, just gotta crop and chop...
