DBBB 2008 is on

centex_buggier - 13-10-2008 at 06:24 PM

Dead Bird 08 is on! Thanks to AJ, Rick, Sarah, Chris, Sparky et al for checking out the beach.

The main event will be at East Beach and the Pre Event at San Luis Pass. The biggest issue is that most of the hotels are currently booked or damaged and it is unknown if there will be rooms available for the event.

Camping at the beach will be the only alternative for many.

More details to come.

Steve.

Or they can drive 30 minutes to the mainland and get one.I had the most fun i had in yrs at the SLP this weekend in 10-20 winds.I flew two kites all day. THe 15m phantom tied to my truck and the 10m venom tied to a chair that was stuck in the sand. I would take turns between the buggy and water. I put in 5-6 hrs of flying in, on sunday alone.Switch kites without landing and go. What a ride...............aj

Any of you guys coming?

action jackson - 13-10-2008 at 07:06 PM

Can any of the old men come play on a field of real obstacals at speed, or just come sit around the campfire a few nights and tell us of buggies with wooden wheels. Oh wait!........... I buggied under that one time. Or how you buggied on the roof of the sandpiper in 43 mph winds. Oh wait that was me again. or how you know the raiologist by first name at UTMB. Oh ..............lets not talk about that one. Glenn, there are more firesticks on the beach now, than ever before. Had pack sand folks< the sand took a hundred year packing and I for one am going to enjoy it with or without a bunch of friends. Just call me selfish. The sandbars have moved and created some nice sets to kitesurf in too................aj:alien::bigok:

I will be there... I am looking forward to meeting you all. Is there anything that I can bring? Or do to help the cause?

P.S.-- Anybody have a decent, cheap buggy that they would sell or trade? Please U2U me with any info... Thanks.

kitemaker4 - 13-10-2008 at 09:19 PM

All that we ask is if you plan on attending bring something to add to the meal for example a veggy tray or dessert. Whatever you bring will be eaten. Looking forward to meeting you too.

Let the nasa wing races begin.

Just back from East beach Harvest Moon water session. It was sweet riding silver waves as the moon was rising. The beach is getting treated to an extra high tide tonight. Its the highest tide we have had since IKE. It has pushed the THe wood and trash to higher point that will make for some sweet low tide runs. East beach seems alot clearner but it was dark the whole time i was there. We are expected to have heavy rains for the next few days.HARD PACKED!!! I am looking forward to a sunny weekend at SLP..................aj

USA_Eli_A - 15-10-2008 at 09:46 AM

ahhh....I've never been and would really like to come...I'll have to see what my alvord trip brings...I'm long over due for a trip there...

if it's gonna blow 43 mph, then I really should be!!!

aj....i wanna eat some bird!!

Taper123 - 15-10-2008 at 02:08 PM

Woo Hoo!

Dylanj423.... we have a PL bug that I mainly use as a towed buggy. It's easy to unhook though, and you can use it if you don't find a bug by then.

I turned my Turky pot into my beer brewing kettle.... but can always throw oil back into it for a bird.

pyro22487 - 15-10-2008 at 03:23 PM

Im still going. I may not have a buggy but I can always kick jojo1 in the shin and take his buggy. Im trying to get my parents to go. They have a nice new 5th wheel.

Thanks for the offer Taper... I may have to take you up on that. Just read about your house damage... WOW. Sorry to hear that. Glad you'll still be able to make it to DBBB, though.

pyro22487 - 16-10-2008 at 01:05 PM

Good point AJ hope to see you there. I'll be the one flying ozone kites unless the wind is just right for my Libre.

I am planning on going right now, but I will have to see how I am recovering from a surgery that I have to have the 28 of this month. Hopefully all goes well and I recover quickly so I can be back with the kite family on my favorite beach on my favorite holiday. With the atmosphere of this years dbbb after the huricane I would sure hate to miss it.

Eli, you should really make an attempt to make it down for the event as it is one that shouldn't be missed if at all possible.

I would say the beach is better than your beach Eli. Not nearly as pretty, but better hardpack and more open beaches. Although the dunes are not nearly as big as your beach.

Big John

USA_Eli_A - 18-10-2008 at 03:34 PM

I HEAR YA...if we get n. winds it big kite or short reach,,,but if you google earth my beach near myhouse..roads, hills. cliffs and it is fn huge, my beach is long so we can get carried away with down winders during storms....

Taper123 - 18-10-2008 at 03:51 PM

You make it down Eli... and you can use my flexi or PL bug whenever I'm not in 'em or on my mountainboard or kiteboard.

Needed another burner today... thinking of searching around for another stainless turkey pot/burner combo. Would be nice when you want to brew two batches of beer... errr... I mean cook an extra turkey. Today's recipe was a german wheat beer and 5 gallons of apfelwien. The things you do when you can't make it to the beach.....

USA_Eli_A - 18-10-2008 at 03:57 PM

ddoooooddd dbbb edition beer...I'm so there!! still trying to plan it...thanks for the offer....I'd like to bring all the toys if I can...but leaving my bug behind save room for ingredients...

kitemaker4 - 18-10-2008 at 04:34 PM

Since the storm there are no more dunes on the beach.

Dunes are being built as we speak at east beach, The beach is wide by the jetties and clean all the way to Stewarts beach. Had some nice runs then i went exploring over on Pelicans Island. Lots of wood and dead livestock over there....aj

USA_Eli_A - 18-10-2008 at 05:21 PM

cool ..... free beef for jerky

kitemaker4 - 18-10-2008 at 07:51 PM

I hear people spend lots of money for aged beef.

Dang it! :sniff: I thought the DBBB was off......I already booked a trip to California to spend Thanksgiving in beautiful downtown Burbank. I am going to miss the BEST turkey feast in the country!
Have an excellent time everyone, may the winds be with you!
See you all at NABX.
Ken

kitemaker4 - 19-10-2008 at 07:18 PM

Sorry about that Ken. We had no idea how the island made out until well after the storm. Right now it will be a camping event on the island with hotel rooms avaliable off the island. We are looking at a small event this year. There is always next year. Hope to see you at nabx.

kitedog - 2-11-2008 at 01:14 PM

We're coming down on our way to South Padre. We're only going to be there Sunday after lunch but we're going to have our trailer. Is there a place to camp there at San Luis on Sunday night?

Greg

centex_buggier - 2-11-2008 at 02:17 PM

Both San Luis and East Beach are wide open for camping any time during the winter. Only fishermen are supposed to camp there, but I've never been asked to move.

If you're towing a big trailer, you might need 4x4, but the sand is fairly compact.

kitedog - 2-11-2008 at 03:10 PM

Thanks for the info. The trailer is a 30' toy hauler. We've got the 4x4 but I won't risk getting stuck. The trailer rides pretty low.

I see you have a libre full race. How do you like it? I'm seriously thinking about pulling the trigger on the one just listed on the forum.

Greg

bbrex - 2-11-2008 at 04:52 PM

I pull a 25 foot Featherlite toy hauler behind my 4x4 and never have had problem.

Fullrace is the way to go unless you go to the hardcore buggy.
Brad

centex_buggier - 2-11-2008 at 05:02 PM

You'll have no problem. I bring my 2wd van several times each year and have never been stuck.

I was looking at the buggy myself, but I just can't justify a second one right now. It's stainless which is better than what I have. I love them for a smooth stable and comfotable ride. I have ridden 200 miles in two days and was not a bit bruised. You can put plenty of kite up in the air and not feel like you're going to get pulled out. Most people at Dead Bird have Libre buggies. You can trust Sean to be straight up with you on the deal too.

Steve.

bbrex - 3-11-2008 at 06:07 AM

Too late on the fullrace, Susan bought it last night. But I think that she will be selling one of her V-max's, 3 libre buggies is too many.
Brad

kitemaker4 - 3-11-2008 at 08:17 AM

I do plan on selling one of my v-max buggys. Right now I am waiting on the full race to get here before I put it on the pkf for sale. I will post some pictures when I list it. The buggy is in great shape (like brand new).

Susan (npw goddess)

dylanj423 - 3-11-2008 at 09:56 AM

Would you (Susan) be interested in a partial trade for a dirtsurfer GP 16 and some cash for a buggy?:D

kitemaker4 - 3-11-2008 at 10:08 AM

Sorry I have no desire to get a dirtsurfer. I will be selling the buggy for cash.

centex_buggier - 3-11-2008 at 01:54 PM

Susan,
Maybe you could rig the dirtsurfrer up for Beau. His balance must be getting pretty good by now.

kitedog - 3-11-2008 at 05:30 PM

Hey Susan!

Evidently, jonesing4wind was checking email when you called and you scooped that full race right from under me! I was already riding it in my mind!

So...are you going to be DBBB on Sunday November 23? Will you have your v-maxs? Will anyone have bugs for sale there?

Hope to meet you!

Greg

kitemaker4 - 3-11-2008 at 10:04 PM

Yes I will be there. If you wanted to look at the buggy at dead bird I am not sure if I will still have it. I will post some pictures on the forum when I am ready to sell it. It has been well taken care of. I think it still looks new. If you buy it I can bring it to Galveston and you can pick it up there.

Not sure if anyone else will have buggys for sale at the event.

Susan (npw goddess)

kitedog - 4-11-2008 at 06:11 AM

Please send me pics when you can. Maybe we can do a deal! We will be at SLP on Sunday afternoon the 23rd.

You're in LA? We were just in Shreveport yesterday. I think we'll go through Baton Rouge and visit relatives on the way to Galveston.

Greg

I hooked my Red Aussie up to a three meter trainer using an x-back mushing harness and used it for resistance strength training. It worked great until she tried to go through the agility course!

I'm thinking some small ears of corn battered up and fried would be sooooooo good with the turkey.

austinbuggyman - 5-11-2008 at 09:51 PM

Hotel rooms are now available!!! But their rates went way up.
Beachcomber $85/night: http://www.galvestoninn.com/
Super8 $99/night: http://www.super8.com/Super8/control/Booking/modify_dates?pr...
These hotels are both at 61st St. and Seawall which puts you about half way between East beach and SLP. They both offer discounts with AARP and AAA. Taxes will add about 15% to the bill.

centex_buggier - 5-11-2008 at 10:02 PM

That's still alot less than Seaside hotels :bouncy:

kitemaker4 - 10-11-2008 at 10:03 PM

I talked to Steve Edley and he offered to bring a bird down. I need to get a head count to see how many turkeys we need.

Are the pelicans aged meat?

Susan ( npw goddess )

Taper123 - 11-11-2008 at 04:53 AM

I don't think they are aged Susan. Last time AJ brought one, it was a real fight to get the sucker in the pot. I still have beak marks...:Ange09:

dylanj423 - 11-11-2008 at 07:08 AM

I was planning on bringing a big tub of guacamole and some chips... sound alright? Maybe we should get a list going of who is bringing what dish, and how much we will need to bring?

bugymangp - 11-11-2008 at 07:28 AM

hey guys
don`t forget to take lots of pictures for those of us who can`t make it this year.
and take pictures of the beach. i would like to see how the beach is.
i won`t be there in body but i sure will be there in sprit.
have a great time and may the winds be sweet.
i`ll see the gang at NABX for sure.

East Beach

treblehook - 16-11-2008 at 08:52 PM

Was able to make it to East Beach Sunday the 9th to get some bugging in...winds E to ESE 15 to 20. 100% sunshine. 77 degrees Plenty of room to buggy even with the sparse crowd at the beach.top speed 33.3 mph, my personal best. The beach at the far east end (south jetty to the channel) has been rearranged by IKE. one big tidal pool. Most of the boundary pylons are gone or snapped off . Which makes it interesting in the buggy.. lot of remaining stub ups to avoid.Looks like they have cleaned the beach well, nice and smooth..
did get one run to Stewart's Beach in tandem with the wife in tow.
not as quick getting back...great day ..should be at SLP Sat. or Sun.
till then ..Herb
