Jockeys Ridge

harddrive8 - 24-10-2008 at 10:53 AM

Sandman and I are heading to Jockeys Ridge from Nov. 22 till the 27. If anybody would like to meet to fly with us, it would be awesome!

Also, even for people who may not want to meet that weekend, is there any advice or tips to be given about Jockeys Ridge, places to eat, places to visit that are of interest?

USA_Eli_A - 24-10-2008 at 10:57 AM

where is that, flying paraglider??? details maps what are you flying??

harddrive8 - 24-10-2008 at 10:59 AM

It's on the outter banks of NC. I'll be taking everything in my sig. I haven't ever been there myself, but hoping for some advice and maybe a couple people who would want to fly with me.

Little info can be found at: http://www.stateparks.com/jockeys_ridge.html

If the wind doesn't blow in Nov then something is most likely wrong...like the world has ended or started spinning the other way.

Most of the restaurants down there are seasonal but there are a few that remain open year round. I'm not sure how much ya'll have budgeted for food, but if you want at least one NICE dinner there's a place call Ocean Boulevard in Kitty Hawk. They've got some of the best food I've ever had. A dinner with a couple drinks and an appetizer will run you around 50 bucks a person before the tip.

Where are you staying?

harddrive8 - 26-10-2008 at 03:06 PM

It would be awesome to get to fly with some of you while we're there!

We'll be staying at the Ramada Plaza in Kill Devil Hills. We'll arrive early Saturday morning (around 8ish) and I'm trying to talk Sandman into hitting the dunes shortly after a visit to Kitty Hawk Kites.

Just looked up trip time... From where I live, it will take a little over 5hrs to get down there. And thats if traffic is nice. Little rough. Sounds like fun, but I might have to stay local as I will be just getting back from a 12 day trip to California. That and hotel fees are going to be more than I can afford. Sorry, this is not something I can afford to do this time around. Maybe next time...

Sandman - 6-11-2008 at 05:18 PM

No problems. I have been saving up for this trip since September just to be able to get down there. Just glad to see the gas prices dropping. Hope to see you all down there, but if you cant make it that is fine to. With the economy the way it is, I am surprised that I am actually making this trip.

Might I suggest a trip to the Blue Crab Tavern while on OBX? A great little local watering hole where you can come as you are.

HQ Kites and myself are sponsoring a private party here Thanksgiving night. Hope you guys will stick around for it.

Not sure if we will be able to make this one. 6 hour ride back home Thursday night so I can be back to work on Friday. But we will smoke the idea over between now and then. Also depends on how broke we are when we leave Kitty Hawk Kites LOL. Thanks for the invite. :)

Hey Chris,
I saw you at the OBX this weekend. I bought the HQ Neo and Apex at the Kitty Hawk Kites shop. I jumped with the Apex when it was blowing 15 knots on Pea Island. I wanted to see how well it could jump. I had some difficulty launching from the windmill point--it seems difficult when the wind is blowing towards the windmill point (for beginnners!). Thanks for your advice. I like the Neo a great deal, but I do most of my kiting at Virginia Beach. Keep in touch!

Raphael,

Great to meet you. You pulled into the parking lot just as we were heading to Jockey's Ridge on a downwinder. Danny was out on a 14m Neo, while I was riding an 11m.

There can be some ground wind disruptions at windmill point with the buildings and brush. Best to walk closer to the water for launching. Without any air in the foil, the NEO needs to be launched straight downwind.

If you are a beginner kiteboarder, I'd suggest walking upwind once your kite is launched at windmill. This will let you go downwind a bit before needing to take an edge and get away from the marsh islands. Nice slicks there once you get out.

pack warm it looks like it will be coooold winds in the teens Temps in the mid30-40s

harddrive8 - 19-11-2008 at 05:24 PM

First thing in my bags were some Cold Gear Under Armor shirts! I plan on packing as if I'm going skiing! Most of my stuff is packed and ready to go, and I'm ready for it also. If anybody from the forum is planning to come, I'll have on a PKF hoodie pretty much the whole week, and flying one of the kites in my sig. I'll also have a HQ Balero stunt kite I'll be flying as well. If you see me out there feel free to introduce yourself, and I'll be on the lookout for PKF wear myself :cool2:

Good thing is I have already packed all my good warm clothes. Bad thing is I work during the night and it is 20-30 degrees here now. :( Froze my butt of tonight at work. And tonight dont look good either. LOL

Sandman - 25-11-2008 at 06:32 AM

arrived saturday to temps in the 30's F and winds around 18 - 22 mph. Played around a bit on the ridge until KHK opened up. Drove across the road and checked them out for a few and on the way back out to the van we bumped into silvereaglekiter. went back over to the ridge and did some flying with Nick.

All in all this has been a great trip so far. the weather has improved since sat. and everything is going smooth. The only complaint we have is they do not allow buggies inside Jockeys Ridge. :flaming:

BeamerBob - 25-11-2008 at 06:38 AM

sandman, did hd talk you into coming to Folly Beach on the 13th yet?

Sandman - 25-11-2008 at 06:45 AM

We discussed it during our long ride down here to the OBX. I think we both decided to wait and see how much money we have after this trip. But we are both wanting to try and make it down since it is almost in our back yard.

Sandman - 27-11-2008 at 03:03 PM

Just arrived home. Had fun playing in the sand this week. Dont care for the long ride there and back, but I am already researching another trip down there for sometime around April 09.
