Folly Beach Kite Jam

 Pages:  1

BeamerBob - 12-11-2008 at 07:41 PM

I just got my plans together and Tridude is already in. It is at Folly Beach, which is the kiter friendly beach in Charleston SC. The date is December 13th which is a Saturday.

Blow off that one party you have that night and lets get together to play on the beach. There's nothing like having multiple kites in the air at the same time.

Low tide is at about 2pm the way I calculated it. I should be close. I will arrive at about 10am and will stay till dusk makes me fold everything up. We will bring the buggy and Wexler's land board, and all the kites. There is a county parking lot at the southern tip of the island that lets you walk right out on the beach. Who can make it? No need to reserve but it will be cool to know who might be able to make it.

PHREERIDER - 12-11-2008 at 07:49 PM

I'm down for it. 9 th street meet ?

BeamerBob - 12-11-2008 at 08:02 PM

Awesome Chad! I guess it depends on the wind direction. I defer that call to the locals that know best. Good times a comin'!

tridude - 12-11-2008 at 09:14 PM

depends on wind direction and type of traction...............anything on or off shore 9th St north or 6th St south is good. N,NE, or SW for Bobs buggy,KGB, or H20 at the south end around the point (Charleston county park). To checkout aerial link of Folly click photos on the tool bar....................If all else fails, we have 4 longboards!

mgatc - 13-11-2008 at 05:53 AM

Hi Guys,

A month out is a stretch to my scheduling ability. Sounds like a good time though and I'll certainly make the effort. Means I'll have to stop in and see the mother-in-law in Summerville. Oh, the price one pays for having fun!

I'll plan on the county park unless I hear otherwise and bring the landboard, longboard, and son.

Look forward to meeting everyone.

Mel

BeamerBob - 13-11-2008 at 07:24 AM

Mel, make sure you bring those NEOs as well! It will be great to meet you for sure. My sons are 9 and 13. How old is your son? My wife will be there as well, but she will be riding her bike, walking, and reading in the beach chair. My younger son will fly some but will find other things to do as well. We will have two sea kayaks there that they might play with in the river too. The party list is growing!

mgatc - 13-11-2008 at 08:22 AM

The kite bags will be the first thing in the truck.
My son will be 18 the end of this month. He is a MUCH better surfer/wakeboarder/snowboarder than I am. I hold a slight edge in kiting ability but he's coming on strong. I hope my wife and daughter will be there as well.
I just found out about the gear swap from Don's link. I'll bring everything but my wallet.

tridude - 13-11-2008 at 10:02 AM

looks like quite few dual role sails, KGBs, buggy, fiberglass, and epoxy will be on hand. Angus, load up your trailer and get up here. Gas this morning in North Charleston was $1.96 so you cant use that excuse! Unless the weather goes south over the next few weeks, the water temp should be at or around 60 degrees. Currently its 62.5....nothing a 3/2 or 4/3 cant handle...............no laughing from the northern tier please........

lunchbox - 13-11-2008 at 11:18 AM

Man...I sure wish I could join you guys...it would be great to put some faces with the names and get to fly with a big group!

...but still planning on making the Jekyll event next year....fingers crossed.

Can you guys take some pics....?

BeamerBob - 13-11-2008 at 03:15 PM

I force myself to stop from time to time to do silly things like eat and drink. That reminds me to snap photos. My wife also will take some time to take pics. Looks like we could have quite a PKF contingent that weekend. 3 of us together is huge here in the states, and we are already there a month out.

acampbell - 15-11-2008 at 06:37 AM

I'll apply for an exit visa...

BeamerBob - 15-11-2008 at 10:13 AM

House ways and means should stay out of it with $1.85 gas.

Yeah but then there is Border Patrol to clear through to make sure there are no competeing commitments ....

...but I think I'm good.

BTW, Mel (mgatc here) and I just got chased off the beach by a driving rain in front of crappy snatchy and shifty west winds. And did I say lumpy? 2nd time I've been spurned this week, so Folly can be my payback.

tridude - 15-11-2008 at 08:08 PM

sounds good Angus and Im off on the 13th........ Running 2 classes on the 15th so Im free all day Saturday....................How did the Neos due in the lumpies?

tridude - 15-11-2008 at 08:41 PM

hey Speleopower, can you make it up on the 13th? ______ what about you? Dom, Leebrinha?
@ Lunchbox............Ill get pics since its my spot........ once everyones there and flying Ill designate as photographer. Anyway, once Bob and Mgtac grab one of my arcs, I wont see them back for a couple hours! Seriously, if youre driving hours to get here, it should be me taking the pics...........some flags would be nice for wind direction (UT, Ole Miss) anyone else? As a one off, Clemson, Florida, and LSU flags will be acceptable:o............

BeamerBob - 15-11-2008 at 08:46 PM

I can bring a nice orange and white one, pole included. Heck, Fulmer might even join us. I hear he is moving to South Carolina. Up near Clemson.

I'd like for the Hickory, NC and Tidewater VA boys to make it, as well as all the GA and VA folks that made to JIBE.

tridude - 15-11-2008 at 08:56 PM

sounds good Bob.............is that the checkerboard style? That many foils at one time in Charleston would be a record..................

BeamerBob - 16-11-2008 at 05:51 AM

One with checkerboard and one without. The checkerboard might offer more resolution to determine wind direction.
I can't wait. I LOVE being on the beach with a bunch of people that are crazy about this just like me.

Ah, no Neos. Smaller fiixed bridles. Wind was 7 to gusting over 20 with over 45 degree shifts. Closed cells would handle the luffs well but the power-ups could have been hairy...

But I'm in for Folly Beach and will bring the Trailer & Wind Sock

harddrive8 - 16-11-2008 at 11:55 AM

I'd love to make the trip down. It may be one of those things I have to call whether I can make it a week or so before. But I'll see what I can do to make it possible to get down there. I may even try to sucker... I mean talk Sandman into coming with me. :)

Is there any kind of RSVP time requirement to attend or is it pretty well open?

tridude - 16-11-2008 at 12:42 PM

HD,

none at all.......... come on down and fly like you stole it...........FYI to all, the county park charges $5 per vehicle but its a nice, wide beach at low tide with few folks this time of year. If we get an onshore which isnt likely this time of year, 9th St north rocks. Id like to get a go on your 8.5 Blade..........never flown the series IV but I did own a series III, and swapped it for a Ozone Haka. This qualified me for a Darwin Award:puzzled:(sorry Eli). Anyway, the Charleston Crab house is 10 miles up Folly Rd. Great grub and brew...anyone down for dinner and a cold one(s) afterwards?

I imagine that would have been hairy on 3 wheels and glad you can make it...............

BeamerBob - 16-11-2008 at 05:12 PM

The crab house sounds good to us. Count us in. I think we are coming down Friday night as well, just to minimize the hassle on Saturday morning and maximize beach available between tides. I buggied today with no OBE's! Really just went to do Product testing and development for my backrest for the buggy. I have a prototype and I'm at about 90% happy with it. I'll update the pimp my ride post when I get it finished.

I'm already sensing that "not enough day" feeling about the 13th. Trying out that Blade IV 8.5 if it makes it, fly an arc or two, get tired of riding the buggy, maybe get out on the water with some of tridude's boards and maybe one of the many NEO's that seem to be making the trip...... We might need to come back on Sunday to get our fill.

tridude - 18-11-2008 at 04:59 AM

add 1 each Cooper (UT) kite to the list. For all that dont know, the Cooper is almost the same BRIGHT orange as the University of Tennessee orange. Can I get a "good ole Rocky top"?

BeamerBob - 18-11-2008 at 07:19 AM

I'll bring an orange flag to complement the Coastal Wind Sports wind sock. Lets hope they are both standing proud that day pointing straight inland.

tridude - 21-11-2008 at 08:45 AM

FYI,

getting a lot OF W, WNW, and NW winds the past few dayz (common during winter) but dont let that put you all off. Any of those winds (offshore) will get you from the county park to the pier and back which is about 5 or so miles round trip. As for wind quality, Folly is on a barrier island. Between the island and mainland are about 2 or 3 miles of marshes with no trees so the signature quality is mostly good. I have a link attached in this thread with aerial views of the island, and beach. Ill take some low tide pics as it moves towards noon next week and post them..........................

speleopower - 23-11-2008 at 08:22 AM

When is this? December 13?? If I've already got plans that weekend. I fly radio controlled jets and we are having a meet up in Ocala Florida the weekend of December 13.

-Scott

BeamerBob - 23-11-2008 at 06:28 PM

I was hoping you might be able to make the trip up. Sorry to miss you this round. We looked at the weekend before but high tide was at 2pm. That is low tide on the 13th.

speleopower - 23-11-2008 at 07:12 PM

Oh, well. I'll make it up for something sometime.

Later-Scott

PHREERIDER - 24-11-2008 at 01:47 PM

cool speleopower! love my RC junk

love my diablo 60... It ain't a jet

wow that brings back alot memories

the smell of nitromethane ....sweet speed

oh yeah to bad we want see you there at folly tridude has some nice gear can't wait to see the open cell foils in action. maybe he'll part with one ???hopefully

tridude - 24-11-2008 at 02:42 PM

No problems with anyone flying my kites. Ill bring both quads, Scorp and 13m V. Youve got the 16m V covered. Bring your FS, Id like to have a go on that, As said earlier, Ill fly some but designate more to pics since Im only driving 20 mins. Ill have my landboard and water boards avail if anyone wants to use them. Thought of putting up a cabana type shelter. Ill check with FB city hall about grilling on the beach. Shouldnt be a problem. Im renting a couple big coolers from Charleston AFB outdoor rec so don't forget your drinks/Ive got the ice......................open container (beer) is legal at Folly.......

BeamerBob - 24-11-2008 at 05:25 PM

Wow tri. You're really stepping up dude. Thanks for the coolers and ice. I have 2-48 quart coolers I could bring to avoid the rental if you want. We have less than 20 people I imagine.

PHREERIDER - 24-11-2008 at 05:26 PM

right on! always drag it all.

tridude - 24-11-2008 at 06:05 PM

rentals are cheap at MWR, one of those nice retired benefits......and saves space for you traveling folk. Wind and waves look good tomorrow so Ill get some pics of 9th and the county park.................

kitesurfer - 26-11-2008 at 07:55 AM

i just found this tthread...i might be in for it to. 6 hours is a long drive for no wind though. i kiteboard only now as i sold my buggy. i would be staying overnight and camping at folly beach campground. anyone else camp?

tridude - 26-11-2008 at 08:20 AM

KSer,

There are no campsites at or on the beach but you may check the Holliday Inn cottages..........locally owned/cheap. I attached a link to James Island County Park that is 6 miles from the beach with a nice camp ground and facilities. As for land activities I have a landboard, and there should be at least two buggies there. Noticed youre a twinskinner.........Id love a go on the Synergy, as would Phreerider Im sure. Hope you can make it.........................

acampbell - 26-11-2008 at 08:22 AM

what else besides the reactor? 10m CF2? The XXXL will be there as well.....................

BeamerBob - 26-11-2008 at 06:31 PM

Angus, you have time to get one of those 10m Crossfires in! You know, for those days when the 8.3 just isn't enough sail. I'd be tempted in 4-5 mph. I'll have my 7m Blurr there if anyone wants a go on it.

acampbell - 27-11-2008 at 05:34 AM

I've ordered a Reactor 10.8 and I hope it's here in time. If not, I will bring a CFII 10m.... or both. Really it's just ripstop and I can stop any time....

tridude - 27-11-2008 at 07:13 AM

just to add a little excitement on the 13th...............................
Morris Island is at the north end of Folly

I would love fly down to Charleston SC for the fun weekend trip including kite buggy. Charleston Crab House sounds terrific plan afterwards. I had been in Charleston once but not the Folly Beach. I will see how everything is going in about one more week to confirm go-go..

BTW, agreeing that more foils are possibly go for the record in SC :singing:

tridude - 30-11-2008 at 06:55 AM

would be nice to have you.........Folly is about 20/25 mins from the airport. Plenty of hotels along the way. You have the cooperate Holiday Inn on the beach or I would suggest the locally owned Holliday (yes to LLs) cabins. Not five star but clean and cozy. Both centrally located in the restaurant/bar/shopping district. Folly is a step back into time. Everything is locally owned and operated other than the Holiday Inn and Subway. Berts market is a must go with one the best hot dogs you'll ever eat with trimmings for only 75 cents......................

Thanks for pointing the plenty of hotels on the way down from airport and suggestion a must stop for best hot dogs to eat also! Dec. 13th and 14th as two days over the weekend will be my desire fun time planning than just one day Saturday :spin:

BeamerBob - 1-12-2008 at 05:23 AM

We are staying the night and will return for some fun on Sunday as well. Low tide will be an hour later, but we will be gaining beach all morning.

acampbell - 1-12-2008 at 05:43 AM

I think I've added one, maybe two more flyers to the mix.

BTW, those are spring tides too (large range, very low) with the new moon

tridude - 1-12-2008 at 10:44 AM

sounds good Angus......................winds today are wacky, SSW 18 gusting to 35, waves choppy but some head high plus sets. Parked at 9th St walked down to 5th, and caught 4 BIG waves. Paddle back outside was a bear. Rode last one all the way in and when I got out I was at 11th St, a good 1/2 mile from where I started. No kites out, I had the 13 in the car just in case but played it safe. Strong current but glad to report no Great Whites spotted...................................

tridude - 1-12-2008 at 10:51 AM

I took quite a few on the head paddling back out (no duck diving a longboard) so I was some serious GW bait if one was lurking......................:eureka:

speleopower - 1-12-2008 at 11:56 AM

I must be an idot. Can someone post a link to a map showing where the meet is?

If I can get my friend to drive up from my area I'll join in. I just don't think my car will make it right now.

I didn't even know they made a 10.8 Reactor. I've seen times when the 8.3 wouldn't fly though and that extra sail might make the difference. I'm not sure about how much wind to wish for on the 13th. I'd like to try one of these big kites, put some beach time in with the 7m Blurr, be powered up with the Sami and take a ride with an ARC or two. Maybe we will start out at about 3mph and steadily increase to a smooth 25 by Crabhouse time.

tridude - 1-12-2008 at 12:34 PM

Sweet, now if we could get Dom to come we'd have 2 pros............cocoa beach to Folly...........................basically anyone south of Chaz coming up I 95................

http://maps.yahoo.com/#mvt=m&lat=32.692617&lon=-79.9...

just head north on I 95 (bypass around Jax)? Last time I went thru Jax I stayed on 95, remain on 95 north to SC exit 33, highway 17...takes you into Charleston/West Ashley. Youll know your close, car dealers line each side of 17 aka Savannah Highway. Look for highway 171, Folly Beach road, well marked. Turn right on 171 (Folly Beach Rd and go approx 10 miles and you run straight into the beach. At the 2nd traffic light (theres only 2) turn right on Ashley Ave and go straight 2 miles to the park. If we meet at 9th St turn left at the light (Ashley) and head to 9th St. Each block is numbered so you cant miss it. If we meet at 9th, you can park anywhere except 15 feet from a hydrant. The key is make sure your road side wheels are off the pavement or you will receive a $20 ticket. Ill take pix of how and how not to park at 9th...........There is a parking lot at the walkover for 9th that is $1/hr but only saves you 50 feet of walking/carrying kit..................

If anyone north of Chaz is coming and needs directions, let me know and Ill post them here........

BeamerBob - 1-12-2008 at 01:00 PM

What creates the zig zag pattern on the beach? And are you saying we should actually park on 9th Street between Ashley and Arctic? Will wind direction decide whether we are at 9th or down at the county park?

We are less than 2 weeks away guys!

tridude - 1-12-2008 at 01:26 PM

about 6 cars can park on 9th between Ashley and Arctic..its a short block. Arctic is one way so make sure your off the road and parked in the same direction as the one way (east). Wind direction is key to either location, ENE, E will be 9th. N, NE, S, SE, E, SSW, SW, WSW, NW, or W will be the county park. Some duplication in there but remember our coast line runs at about a 45 degree angle to Ga and Fl which pretty much run north/south. You can go 9th on a W or NW but the signature at the park is a lot better (no homes). Except for the W's (offshore) this will compliment both land and water pilots. Zig zags Im not sure what you mean?

BeamerBob - 1-12-2008 at 02:07 PM

Google earth, yahoo maps and google maps all show a zig zag pattern on the beach close to the dunes. The pattern runs from one end of the island to the other.

Tank traps!

...or maybe some type of erosion control.

tridude - 2-12-2008 at 05:04 AM

yep those are erosion fences.....................put in place to try and keep the dunes intact. 9th St has a designated walkover. County park has designated cut thrus between the dunes/fences...........for the beach and sea turtles, make sure you use one or the other...............

Sandman - 2-12-2008 at 10:30 PM

anyone going to be do anything down there on sunday ? also is anyone planning on camping out at James Island County Park ? Also what do the hotel rates look like down there this time of the year ? I have only been able to find one on folly beach and it was 200 a night. I know nothing about this area so what would be the closest place to stay, Charleston ?

Me and harddrive8 are trying to work out the plans for getting down there, just need to figure out how much it is going to cost us after our trip to Jockeys Ridge over thanksgiving.

Thanks for all info. And if we do make it down I will bring my fishing rod for the great whites. :) :wee: :wee:

BeamerBob - 3-12-2008 at 04:31 AM

We are staying at a Fairfield about 20 minutes inland in Charleston. I think tridude said there was no camping in a previous post. We will go back Sunday morning till mid afternoon or so as well as the gentleman from Texas indicated earlier. Wow, I could lay hands on my Blade again! It would be great to meet you two almost local guys.

tridude - 3-12-2008 at 05:20 AM

camping on the beach is a no go however, just up Folly Beach Rd is James Island County Park......excellent camp ground with full hookup for RVs or trailers. Tent sites are available as well. Laundry facilities, small mini mart, washers/dryers, etc................. Also, this time of year is the festival of lights at the park. A scenic 2 mile drive of Christmas lights, etc................gas fire for roasting marshmellows, Santa express train etc.......a must see for anyone staying over Saturday night. Ill check on the Holiday Inn and Holliday cabins for rates at the beach. Another option is West Ashley or North Charleston, plenty of logging available, 30 mins from the beach................................

tridude - 3-12-2008 at 05:28 AM

rates listed below;

http://www.hollidayinnfollybeach.com/rooms.htm

Th Holiday Inn is booked that weekend

google charleston hotels, plenty avail around $60 per night within 30 mins of Folly............

tridude - 3-12-2008 at 09:12 AM

keep from having to scroll thru a 3 page thread, I put travel, room, camping, and food/beverage info in a new thread "Folly info".........................extended range forecast is showing low to mid 70's next Friday and Saturday. This should facilitate a nice southerly afternoon breeze. If this plays out, its looking like the county park. Fingers crossed for some good wind..................

tracktROB - 3-12-2008 at 11:58 AM

Thanks Tridude for massive Folly info for everyone! I got to write down all "must do" in surrounding of Charleston after kite buggying to enjoy even more on top of that entertainment. I knew Charleston have alot of historic sites also as been there two years ago with my family.

I already reserved one bedroom condo right on Folly Beach which the rate is about the same or less than the regular hotel. It is more cozy home feel with full kitchen, fireplace, balcony to beach, private park space, bedroom, lazy couch, free WiFi and more for 95 ea. nite...

It is with great regret that I have to say that me and harddrive will not be able to make this one. Apparently we went over board on the spending on our OBX run over Thanksgiving. :( Between gas, food, hotel, beer, kite, buggy, harness's, and some t-shirts we went broke.

You lads have fun down there and be safe. Drink one for the both of us.

BeamerBob - 4-12-2008 at 04:10 AM

I hate we're going to miss you guys. I'm really excited that there is a campground so close. I think we will make this a destination again in the future. We camp at some coastal place every time the kids get an extended weekend so I'll always put up a flag that something is brewing. Maybe next time.

I'm not sure I had gathered that one of you had gotten a buggy. who's is it and what did you get. Where did you get it from?

Sandman - 4-12-2008 at 04:30 AM

We got the Peter Lynn Comp ST from Kitty Hawk Kites. Right now it is a 50 - 50 deal between the 2 of us. Later on 1 of us will buy another one. Any time you guys do something around this area just let us know.

We both really wanted to make this trip, but with us hitting the OBX and all of our purchases we just cant rake up the money right now. We were talking about camping ourselves to save some money, but it just was not enough saved by doing it. All of my money is going into gas for my "Company" and bills.

But maybe we can catch up with you guys on the next go round.

acampbell - 4-12-2008 at 05:53 AM

I flew last weekend with a guy Stan from Ontario, on work assignment in Macon GA, and he may make it over. He has a quiver full of Butanes up to 14m, but I don't kinow if he has them in Macon.
Bill Culp from Atlanta, the fellow that just bought the BigFoot and recently a Beamer, may bring his Winnebago down.

harddrive8 - 4-12-2008 at 06:19 AM

I too wish I could be there. I'm disappointed to say the least, but the funds just aren't there to make another trip right now. I am going to keep my eye open for the next get-together is and hopefully funds will allow me to join in the fun.

Bob, keep us in mind when the baseball tournaments start.

I changed Crieke to his chosen state of SC. He lives in Aiken, just across the line from me. I sent an email to Kullas. He lives in North GA and came to JIBE. Hopefully he can make the trip as well.

I was telling my wife who all was going to be there and noticed that TracktRob is an old timer with kites and such. He's been on here since 2004. It will be good to have a true veteran with us to learn from.

tridude - 4-12-2008 at 08:26 AM

thanks for the correction BB. First long range forecast is out (intellicast), 60 degrees, partly cloudy, with winds @ 277 degrees (west) at 10 mph. You can usually add 2 or 3 knots to the predictions. County Park would be perfect. You could actually run all the way to the pier and back (2miles) on a westerley.............

weather links added to one stop shopping thread.....................

BeamerBob - 4-12-2008 at 08:55 AM

Wow, a smooth 10 would be worth paying money for. That will let me exercise the Blurr and Wexler will be up and running with the Montana too. I guess the big zippers will start to fly some in that too?

kitedog - 4-12-2008 at 09:01 AM

OK...I'm seriously torn.

I was planning on going to Jekyll this same weekend...had been for a while because of the tides and now the wind is looking to be good on Sunday and Monday. But after reading this thread I am waffling and feeling the pull from Charleston...

Anyone have a ten day forecast for Folly?

Greg

tracktROB - 4-12-2008 at 09:04 AM

The Folly Beach thread is soo lively and the listing of everyones' coming! I was thinking myself the furthest distance guy of all then Canada kiter possibly may come. Hey BeamerBob, I do look forward to meet on the beach for both days as squeezing all the fun out of it. Ha, me as veteran since 2004.. Well, actually I started in late 2002 and only buggied about 3 times a year due to full time job working on aircraft plus family comes first.. I need to break loose and feel the wind power sometimes

Hey Tridude, super thanks for the airport direction as coming from that direction!

The weather forecast for next following weekend looks pretty bright so far.....

tridude - 4-12-2008 at 09:04 AM

yep, cruising on the board or buggy (cough/cough/wink) in 9 kts no prob on the V2 or Scorp. Dont forget the XX and XXXL. I flew the 9.6m in 14 mph winds earlier this week and what a horse. 10 to 12 is probably just perfect for the XXXL, and kite killers worked well. The way it sat down reminded me of the Neos. Angus' 10m CF2/ 8.3 Reactor would also kick it at 10 Im sure. Most likely Rob has a few hefty JoJos making the journey from Texas. Stan brings a 14m Butan..................oh my!:o I think ripsession or bladerunner could fill us in on the power of a 14. Almost forgot, if he comes Speleo has a 10.5m Blade III.....................

BeamerBob - 4-12-2008 at 09:07 AM

Weather Channel shows a 9mph westerly with a 10% chance of rain. Folly has to be lots closer to you and a westerly wind will be much better here than at Jekyll I would imagine. The west end of the island gets its westerlies from across treeless marshes. Jekyll has trees that make the offshores somewhat lumpy, even as great as Jekyll is. Not to mention a bunch of us will be there too. :wee:

Most of us have only been doing the powerkite thing less than 3 years. Some much less than that. I've been power kiting less than 2 years and I only got the buggy thing figured out this spring and then bought one in August. Our Canada guest is actually on work assignment in Georgia, so you get the virtual veteran and farthest traveled trophies. If Speleo is able to make it, he might have an argument about the veteran status. It's always great to get together with fellow kiters. This thread IS quite lively. It is like the 15th most replied to thread on PKF. I'm also proud that it is one of 3 top replied to posts regarding Carolina/GA kite meets. This is a great bunch of guys to hang around with and we love an excuse to go play on the beach.

kullas - 4-12-2008 at 06:34 PM

I realy want to go to this one im going to have to see how things work out at work. Let me work on it and hope to see yall there. and if not i will see yall in Tresure Island

Thanks for sharing your experiences along with others and that's great for the new bunch of southeast coast kiters has started grown not a long ago. I usually kite buggy in Galveston/SLP as my nearest beach in Texas and looking forward to meet new fellow kiters on the other coast side for fun sharing memories even more. NABX/SBBB is one of the example for gathering all kiters in from all over the world... awesome. Great idea with the trophies whom are the furthest traveled made it to the event, smile. Which state does Speleo is from?

BeamerBob - 5-12-2008 at 04:51 AM

Well, as said before, the trophies are virtual, meaning you get all the glory but not actually something you can hold in your hands. Speleopower is in Cocoa beach but has been at this I think since the prior century. He is an old timer in our sport for sure. I'm sure he's forgotten more than I think I've figured out.

Probably true, Scotts surfed in (Mariana Islands) Guam/Saipan as well as the US........funny that is what I used to tell the FNOs prior to retiring sort of......."if you Shelas learn half of what I forgot" you may get promoted...................

extended forecast updated...................looking good for the land guys, not so for the H2O..................10kts @309 degrees which is straight offshore. Buggy/KGBers will be rolling................

speleopower - 5-12-2008 at 12:10 PM

I really really don't think I'll make it. I've not been able to get time off work for good behaviour (well ok I'm not that well behaved).

I'm in Central Florida. My first kitesurfing experience was Kialua Bay in Hawaii in the late mid 90's i.e. 1997.

Wish I could go but it's just to far for a 2 day weekend. I would have to leave Friday afterwork and get back before work on Monday. That's a long way to go.
I'm old and need my beauty rest:puzzled: Ok I"m 39.

Later-Scott

tridude - 6-12-2008 at 06:20 AM

windguru was added to the extended forecast in the "one stop shopping" thread this morning..........its usually not far off on wind speed and direction. Click on the link, on the menu tab click spot search, type folly beach, then click search. Big low pressure moving up the coast mid week so how far north it is will determine wind direction. Guru had a NE flow, the others forecasts are calling for NW. If the low stalls theres a possibility for an onshore. If it moves quickly, it should be NW......................either scenario will work at the county park..........6 dayz and a wake up folks:thumbup:

speleopower - 7-12-2008 at 07:27 PM

I'm officially out 100%! I broke my tailbone the other day and I'm F'ing hurting like a mofo!!!! I'll never make fun of someone who breaks their butt again. About all I can do is stand up and be sitll. Sitting hurts, laying down hurts, walking hurts shoot everything hurts! It's the worst.
Take a bunch of pictures at the event.

No good story as to how I broke it but lets just say tile floors and slippery socks don't mix! My feet just went out from under me and I sat down-rather quickly.:shocked2:
Scott

lunchbox - 7-12-2008 at 08:26 PM

Oh sh$t Scott...sorry to hear that! I once landed on my tailbone going off a jump sledding and landing on ice...I only bruised it and man, I was dizzy and nausea for a long time...I can only imagine how breaking it would feel...ouch!!!

When I first read your post I thought it had to do with kitesurfing...guess there are other things just as dangerous.

Feel better...btw,,,how long are you out?

End of hijack....

tridude - 8-12-2008 at 10:37 AM

low tide Saturday is 2:30 pm, what time are most of you getting to the beach? FB County Park looks like the spot....................I'll probably start setting up around 10ish/1030. Ill be parked at 9th St surfing till around 945 am. Just look for the "hoopty", white Toyota mini van. Ill have an available board if you'd like to surf prior to the meet, just bring your wet suit.

BeamerBob - 8-12-2008 at 10:39 AM

I would like to be there by 10 myself. Getting the whole family in the car and travelling about 3 hours could encourage some delays though. County park should be easier for parking and unloading it seems. 4 days and a wakeup!

EDIT: Looks like a NE wind on Saturday which would blow straight down the beach. Sunday is offering an ESE wind that would be directly onshore. Tridude, Will we just run on the end of the island with that NE wind? I guess low tide lets it get pretty wide on the SW end of the island?

MadKiteBoy - 8-12-2008 at 12:51 PM

wow guys im really lookin foward to this meet... me and my dad (mgatc) will be there bright and early

BeamerBob - 8-12-2008 at 01:36 PM

You just can't imagine the buggy fever you will take home with you Saturday. No medicine, and no cure. You'll love it.
