It's Coming - Sprang Thang 09

coreykite - 2-12-2008 at 12:12 PM

Hey Sailors,
It's nearly that time again.
At the least, make scratches on your calender.

May 29th (Friday) through May 31st (Sunday)
will see us gather once again.
Since 1995 - It's SPRANG THANG!!

The weekend AFTER Memorial Day.

Traditionally we've met at Walt's Cove at El Mirage Dry Lake.
The BLM has instituted a user fee for the lake bed.
Starting at $15 for a day pass, $30 for a week pass and $90 a year.
We have to decide if that fee is sufficiently offset by the value we receive in such a gathering at that specific location.
We always have choices.

SPRANG THANG

Once again we will forget to race.
Organization (what?) will be absent.
The idea is to provide for ourselves.
Pack It In... Pack It Out.
Spectators are not catered to.
Participants are welcome.
This is wind-powered specific play.
No facilities on-site.
Camping allowed - Even encouraged.

nabx 09 will be almost 2 months ago by the time Sprang Thang rolls around.
You're gonna NEED this.

Just letting you know.

Hey Corey,

Just about time for NABX, but that's not what this thread is about ;-) I've added the Sprang Thang to our calendar and it's all looking good for us to be there.

Regarding Elmers or SomeWhereElse. My preference would be to continue at Elmers. Here are my reasons:
* I really prefer the buggy terrain at Elmers over any other place.
* I know it's not free anymore, but the daily cost is trivial compared with the other associated costs.
* For us NorCal folks Elmers is a long drive; Superior is a few hours longer (especially when you consider the actual drive time). The few hours extra is the difference between getting some buggy time in on the day of the drive or not.
* There is tradition at Walts Cove for the Sprang Thang. I'm for continuing the tradition.

The big thing (for me) is the terrain. Elmers offers variety that no other lake bed does.

N-e-ways, that's my 2 cents worth.

Thanks,
Darrin

Hey Sailor,
I agree with you Darrin.
Elmer's has a long tradition in the buggy world.
It was my first dry lake.
I love the terrain.
I feel the cost is far offset by the value.
Being the weekend AFTER Memorial Day Weekend helps keep even more noise away.

I hope some of the others will chime in with their opinions.

Sounds like a Boogie Thing by James Cotton, but the way Corey sings it around the camp fire after a little shotcar fuel you only hear "it's a buggy thing". Now that was a few years ago at Elmers in January but that great memory still persists.
Thanks Corey

Jon,
I found that James Cotton tape.
I can sing it for you again.
Now if I can just find a cassette tape player...

Oh yes. Right there next to the Beta video machine.

It's a Boogie Thang...
A Buggy Boogie Thang...

Buggy All Night Long...

Personally, El Mirage is my favorite for a couple of reasons. It's easiest to get to from the bay area, it has the best terrain, it is fairly easy to get to (no 15 miles of bad road) and it brings back a lot of fond memories of my juvenile dirt bike days... I grew up in nearby Apple Valley.

The motorcycles and speed racers really don't bother me as it is a big lake and a little vigilance goes a long way in a safety sense.

Just my two cents.

I vote for Elmer's also.

About the only times I get to buggy are the 'thangs or pre-events and Elmers is easiest for me coming out of L.A.

I will put it on my calendar and hope to see you guys there.

(Last year the truck tranny broke on the way over, hopefully this year the trips will be non-eventful.)

Cheers!
