how to launch a 10m Ozone Frenzy

Kitevol - 4-12-2008 at 02:19 PM

I have a 10m ozone frenzy and launched it straight downwind in about 17mph, unhooked but it just ripped out of my hands..hence why I didn't hook in.

What is the best way to side launch these big foils?? or launch in high winds??

How much experience do you have kiting? You may want to start smaller... or at least in lighter winds.

Not being hooked means the bar was sheeted all the way in when you tried launching it. If you want to launch directly down wind, hook in, pull the depower strap in all the way, and sheet out on the bar as you launch the kite. Let your body slide forward (scud) as the kite climbs to zenith.

Or the safer method is to launch the kite at the edge of the wind window on your left or right side and let it climb up the edge of the window toward zenith.

Either way, make sure you have your leash connected and know how to use your safety systems.

i've also got a 10m foil and i've always been told do NOT launch it straight down wind because no matter what the size foil it is or if it's depower or not: When you are launching the kite it IS a 10 meter foil kite and will act like one :P. Side of the wind my friend! :)

what is done frequently is getting it all set up downwind if you want, and then walk sideways while holdin' onto the bar.

Correct me if i'm wrong but, unhooked: wouldn't that make it fully powered up too?

EDIT:
LOL! wow, i got beat by two others within 1 minute.

Yup. Unhooked would mean it'd be fully powered depending on how far in his power or depower strap was pulled.

As far as unhooked launches, I've only ever heard of launching C-kites unhooked with the depower strap all the way in. This is because they have less depower range than bows/others. And they're always launched on the sides of the window, of course.

Launching and flying a 10m Depower unhooked isn't the best choice ?

Always launch with the depower strap almost all the way on. Launch from the side. Also rest with your kite to one side NOT ZENITH.

If you MUST hot launch do it hooked in with the depower strap on. Pull the bar in all the way so that the kite won't speed up too fast. Let the bar out as it hits zenith. Trim the depower to suit the conditions and your off!

If you are just starting out, some time on a smaller kite will speed up your learning curve greatly !

Sorry hit enter on accident...

After trying to type instructions, I remember that it was covered well in my Flysurfer manual... different kite, but same technique should apply to your kite (it is depower, right... even if its not, it should work)....

On the flysurfer website, they have links to their manuals. Look up in the table of contents "High Wind Launching" for the Psycho 3 its page 19. Launching from the side of the window.

They explain it better than I tried to.

Thanks

Thanks guys, appreciate the help. I been flying mostly inflatables for a year. I always launch at the side of the wind window..just wasn't so sure about foils..The only other foil I had was a 3.5m Bullet..pretty easy.

just hook in and let it rip you down wind on your back for lkike 25m then stand up walk up wind get on the board at shred .

How do you stake a depower kite...?

That's what I do but more so on my feet than back :wee:

I stake through the chicken loop and then pull the brake / rear leaders back around the stake. Some setups have a rear line grab line that you could also use to stake the kite out instead of pulling each leader back like I do.

As far as bar in or out during launch, the bar all the way in during launch will stall the kite so it moves slowly, but is fully powered up. Bar out is the least amount of power but allows the kite to move much faster than when the bar is sheeted in, thus delivering more power. Either way you're going to get pulled, so launch at the side if you can.
