Forgive another newbie foray here: 
I read the harrowing account of a spill at a skate park by boarder and kite designer Andy Wardley. Despite being out of practice, he felt confident
and didn't bother with safety equipment. After a few successful goes, he then really wrecked his teeth.
But even if he used a standard skateboard (or power-kite helmet) , there would have been no protection for a face-first plowing. While I don't see as
many such hazards in a field or beach, I can see a risk with parking lots and across other hard surfaces.
The only other helmet alternatives I've seen, like BMX or buggy stuff, are huge and long. Or they're partial, upper half visors, like with scooter
helmets.
I'm wondering why there isn't a simple, single, nose-level bar that could be attached around the minimal skate helmet designs?
It would at least give a little protection but still not be too conspicuous or bothersome.

i use a giro full face downhill mountain bike helmet. its light and breaths well. it has a foam construction with a thin fiberglass outer shell. i
bought mine used for $30 off of craigslist. I think they are about $120 new.
might not be perfect but it would save your mouth and jaw in the even of a face first crash.

I've started using a standard motocross helmet. If it works for motox bikes going fast it will work for kite ATB on hard packed sand. A couple
hundred dollar helmet is cheaper than signing in at the emergency room or emergency dental surgery.

personally really like the Giro stuff, nice and light and lots of ventilation options. IMHO.
