OK...the tides for Jekyll are perfect from the 8th to the 14th or so. I've been watching the wind closely on a number of different sites because I
can only break away for one day. For the most part its Northwesterlies which suck but NE on Friday and then again on Monday. Accuweather calls for SE
on Monday. Is Accuweather as accurate as they claim to be? I hope so! C'mon Southeasterlies!acampbell - 7-1-2009 at 07:14 AM
They all Lie!!!
I find that they are more accurate 24 hours out, but in the winter anything can happen.
Last weekend they reported SouthWest in real time and what we got was pure south. Then for about 20 min. we were teased with SE that allowed nice
beach runs in fog with 1/2 mile visability.
About April we return to the prevailing high pressure sitting off the Carolinas bringing anything from NE to ESE (perfect). The afternoon heat then
kicks in the Seabreeze which will take the NE wind and suck it right off the water for a frequent on-shore.
For now, it's just table scraps for wind.Taper123 - 7-1-2009 at 08:32 AM

That's funny... your feeding "Kitedog" table scraps of wind.
Same here though, can't trust the weather services all the time, and it's hit or miss this time of year.acampbell - 7-1-2009 at 11:42 AM
NOAA says East winds 10 kts Friday afternoon. That would be a park-and-ride. But I'm sure it's a tease that will change. Huge spring tides will
offer a lot of beach for any direction, though. Drive halfway to Bermuda on the sand-bar at low tide.
Yeah that's St. Simons Island (airport) a few miles to the north of Jekyll. good for this time of year with frontal systems but won't notice a local
Seabreaze on Jekyll later on.
A weather company is planning on installing a wireless station on Jekyll right at Kite Beach or near enough. They sell the data from their network
but I think they will give locals a feed for real-time data.kitedog - 7-1-2009 at 12:56 PM
Thanks guys! I'm betting on Friday...are you going to be there Angus?acampbell - 7-1-2009 at 01:17 PM
I never miss a chance for a park-and-ride at low tide!!kitedog - 7-1-2009 at 01:23 PM
We'll call you on the way in!kitedog - 9-1-2009 at 06:48 AM
Man...I got hosed again! I was all packed to go and woudln't you know it...one of our horses started to colic last night and there is no way we could
leave. I am so bummed. The one day the wind was right and tide is super low. Don't get me wrong, the animals will always take precedent but I need
my time too. Once that critter is better, I'm going to make him haul me around the pasture on my mountainboard!acampbell - 9-1-2009 at 07:47 AM
Well anyway the prediction of east winds has given way to northeast as I feard, so you won't miss anything prime. Hope the horse is better and see
you next time.kitedog - 9-1-2009 at 08:08 AM
Thanks for making me feel better about the wind, Angus. Do you know where I can find info about the Treasure Island event? Is it board and buggy
friendly?acampbell - 9-1-2009 at 08:55 AM

Thanks for the info! What about bugs and boards?
I'm thinking I better stay away from that Dog Staking demo! :shocked2:acampbell - 9-1-2009 at 09:42 AM
Sorry-
The beach is buggy and board friendly but the board will need to be near the water on the narrow strip of hard-pack sand. Looking at the tides, low
tide is in the AM that weekend andthe Gulf follows a different rrythm, so we will only get advancing tides, making hardpack limited I think. I seem
to remember the beach being steep at the waterline, so the hard-pack is narrow. someone local chime in!
The beaches are huge at hight tide- more than a football field. Sand is soft, though, better suited to the wider wheels for the bugs.BeamerBob - 9-1-2009 at 09:48 AM
I was at Fort Desoto just south of TI last week and was amazed at how unnoticable the tides were. There isn't much fluctuation at all. The somewhat
steep hard part of the beach hides the tides but I was on the beach all day for 3 days and don't remember the tides affecting us at all. The beach
shape at TI might be slightly different but its the same water.mgatc - 9-1-2009 at 09:59 AM
Used to live in Tampa and spent a lot of time on the water. The tides in the gulf are negligible most days. Probably only significant during spring
and flood tides.kitedog - 11-1-2009 at 07:02 PM
OK...I'm gonna give Jekyll another shot tomorrow. The horse is home from the hospital and, barring any other tragedies, I'll be leaving in the
morning for Jekyll. The tides are fantastic (lowest I've seen yet) and the wind is supposed to turn Easterly in the afternoon! Perfect!
Angus...I hope you are ready to hit the beach again! (not literally!)acampbell - 12-1-2009 at 03:51 AM
I have to close shop and hit the trail to Destin FL for the Kite Trade Association meeting then treasure island kite fest. Good luck. Had a great
session Saturday. The beach is HUGE at low tide.kitedog - 12-1-2009 at 08:35 PM
Just got back from Jekyll. Lots of driving for 2 1/2 hours of kiting but it was worth it. The beach was huge and the wind blew consistently 13 mph
plus. Awesome! I sure wish I could do that everyday but I got my fix (temporarily). There wasn't anyone on the beach. My wife and kid walked out
to the sandbar and had fun with all the different shells while I jammed back and forth on the ENE winds. Thoroughly exhausted myself. Good stuff!
