tridude - 15-1-2009 at 07:51 PM

lets get something going guys.........................with the regional quivers we've got it covered from 3 to well 46 in Phrees case:wow:

location changed due to area 51 like circumstances.................

MadKiteBoy - 15-1-2009 at 07:54 PM

Dont really know if the fellas place we ride at (the sod farm) knows what we are doing out there... :embarrased: and dont know how he would feel about more ppl out there.... ill ask the father figure though

BeamerBob - 15-1-2009 at 08:02 PM

Maybe approach him soon to ask way in advance so he doesn't feel pressured to make a decision. Assure him that we leave places as good or better than we find them. Our local kite club has liability waivers we could adopt if that is a concern.

I checked and I'm just over 2 hours away if I raise the landing gear on the yukon.:spin:

tridude - 16-1-2009 at 04:48 AM

well if not the sf we could do something at the Polo Fields in Aiken? Sister-in-law lives just outside Aiken, so that'll work too........................I need to register and sign the waiver..........

BeamerBob - 16-1-2009 at 05:09 AM

Aiken is easy. Everyone is welcome with a signed release. Plenty of room for a crowd and wind direction really doesn't matter because it's so big. I can be there in 35 minutes too. pokitetrash lives 5 minutes away.

mgatc - 16-1-2009 at 07:47 AM

Hi Guys,

I am feeling very guilty about having this place to ride but not being able to share it. The property owner is an older gentleman who I have to call EVERY time Josh and I go out. I was origionally told by someone who lives beside the field that the owner would not allow anyone on his land. Ever. We often use a couple of other less desirable locations to keep from wearing out our welcome with this guy. I am reluctant to push the issue for fear of losing our priviledge of riding there. I'm so paranoid that I won't let a friend take pictures of us out there for the local paper.
Please accept my apology. Josh and I both love sharing wind (sharing, not breaking) with all of you and it pains me not to able to invite you here.

So. In order to bring something to the table, I am looking into a couple of other areas. There are two huge sod farms owned by "Super Sod" somewhat equidistant from all of us. One is between the town of Santee and Eutawville on the south side of Lake Marion and the other is on Hwy 301 near Orangeburg. I will give them a call and see how receptive they may be to the idea. Seems to me this would be an ideal time to use the fields since the grass is dormant. Wish me luck.

BB, how do post a google earth link?

The "father figure"

That map I posted was a google maps link. Once you navigate somewhere, just click the link button at the top right. Then when someone else opens the link, google maps shows the same location and zoom level you had when you copied the link.

Google earth is a bit more tricky, you have to export a KMZ file that another person opens in google earth to achieve the same effect. I've had kmz files botch up before but the google maps link always works.

mgatc - 16-1-2009 at 07:57 AM

The Super Sod complex is at the southwest intersection of I-26 and Hwy 301, also depicted as Five Chop Road. Lots of really big, grassy fields.

Check it out on Google Earth. I'll post a link when I figure out how.

BeamerBob - 16-1-2009 at 08:02 AM

Mel, we understand you not wanting to lose your sod farm forever. Keep it just you and Josh from time to time. Maybe go see him after a session to thank him for his hospitality and ask him questions to see if any part of your presence bothers him and if there is anything you guys could do differently to ease his concerns. It will show you care about stewardship and he will maybe relax when he hears himself unable to come up with objections. You may never have a keg party there with live bands and stuff, but you can maybe get a little more latitude for you and Josh to go and fly kites without walking on eggshells.

mgatc - 16-1-2009 at 12:28 PM

Thanks Bob. I'll work on it.

mgatc - 16-1-2009 at 01:34 PM

tridude - 16-1-2009 at 06:38 PM

so Aiken perhaps?

BeamerBob - 17-1-2009 at 08:01 AM

We just need to watch for a windy weekend day and do it. That would be a blast to have 6 or more of us out there. Chris and I have fun chasing each other around so 2-6 more would be a BIG time.

pokitetrash - 17-1-2009 at 08:23 PM

Heck Yea, we can fly in Aiken!! I already have the landowners permission for us to use it as Aiken Kite Club (I know, very original name, came up with it to put on the waiver the landowner wanted us to sign...) We need to come up with a cool name for the polo field there if we group up regularly. Suggestions? It's a horse ranch /practice polo field so maybe something like "OOBE Farm" (I've had my share of OOBE's there 'cause of the potential for inland gusts... and- oh yea, BeamerBob looked very silly wearing his rear axle as a hat one time..) or "Kite Field"--See, I'm not terribly inventive...

Anyway, We can't guarantee that there won't be practice polo (they publish no schedule and local clubs go out an practice whenever they want) which happens every now and then but I think this is too cold for them right now. I got skunked maybe twice last year/fall. Anyway, if we get out there and they're playing, they don't usually stay more than a couple hours. We can never fly when there are riders in the field or on horseback on "our" field so worst case we might have to wait a bit for our turn. Oh, a mud guard or errr, a poo guard would come in handy after polo... If I'm not at ....work:barf:, I'll bring my motorhome out for R&R, cooking, facilities, and such and I'll ask the owner if I can leave it over night for anyone coming long distance to stay over in it. I live about 10 minutes away so I get to go home!!

harddrive8 - 17-1-2009 at 08:40 PM

I'd be very interested in getting to fly with ya'll in Aiken. It's not too bad of a drive, and pictures I've seen look GREAT!

pokitetrash - 22-1-2009 at 08:03 PM

What about the weekend of Feb 7 & 8 to meet in Aiken? That's before the major polo season begins which I think people start practicing in March. I'm off that weekend and can bring out the RV for the "clubhouse" 1 or both days. We've been pretty lucky with wind lately, bring big kites just in case. Anyone who'd like to stay over can sleep in it -- just don't eat my stash of vienna sausage!

BeamerBob - 23-1-2009 at 04:46 AM

I'm free that weekend and can make the big 30 minute trip for sure. This seems to be our windy season doesn't it.

tridude - 23-1-2009 at 06:19 AM

might be able to make it on the 7th....................will let you know

PHREERIDER - 23-1-2009 at 06:34 AM

if the wind is there i'll be there, it'll be fun on the grass,,should get a nice grip.

BeamerBob - 23-1-2009 at 06:53 AM

starting so look like an event! I hope we have enough wind for you arc boys. Everyone start dialing up their karma any way you can.

tridude - 23-1-2009 at 06:56 AM

low winds=anti skunk tools.......................

do we need a copy/sign a waiver?

PHREERIDER - 23-1-2009 at 06:58 AM

yes indeed and we might do some trading tri

pokitetrash - 23-1-2009 at 08:20 AM

Anyone who isn't already a member will need to fill out the waiver and join the Aiken Kite Club, There's no dues, just the landowner wants the forms filled out and then you can fly there whenever you want without calling ahead or anything. Once you're a member, your welcome to bring guests but they'll need to fill out the form once they get here and I can provide you those. We're going to put up a web site soon where you can register on line or at least download the forms and then fax them back. For this meet -up, I'll bring the forms out with me.

Looking like where gonna have a big time!

tridude - 26-1-2009 at 11:33 AM

Ive got the pass de la kitchen for the 7th................:duh:

PHREERIDER - 26-1-2009 at 12:33 PM

sounds good

the location one more time

BeamerBob - 26-1-2009 at 12:50 PM

It's great that this is gaining some traction. No pun intended.

link to google map

pokitetrash - 26-1-2009 at 02:49 PM

Not sure of the actual 911 address because it's not in a neighborhood but the town is Beech Island, SC. , look for intersection of Pine Log Road and Storm Branch Road. Field is about a hundred yards up on Storm Branch Rd.

BeamerBob - 26-1-2009 at 05:45 PM

2425 storm branch Rd Beech Island, SC

This comes out right in front of the entrance road to the kite field. The road showing at the middle of the field on the satelite view no longer exists.

kitedog - 28-1-2009 at 05:39 PM

So...is this get together happening on the 7th? What time? Is there room for another jonesing kiter? Send me the waiver. I'm in if the invite is open!

harddrive8 - 28-1-2009 at 06:35 PM

As well for me. What time is everyone expecting to arrive Saturday? Hoping to make the trip to get to meet and fly with many of the greats...

BeamerBob - 28-1-2009 at 07:52 PM

The more the merrier. Pokitetrash is your man with the waivers. He'll be along with info I'm sure. U2U a request to be sure. If it is normal weather patterns, there won't be much wind till late morning. We shouldn't target arriving till 10 or so and then we're ready for wind. If you've signed your release you could be there yourself without any of the regulars. Oh, I hope the wind is blowing that day with all these fellow kiters coming to play in my backyard.

Harddrive, we need to work on that quiver don't we? If this whole crew shows, you won't have enough time to try them all!

Kitedog, I was afraid your western adventure was going to keep you away. Awesome you can make it.

pokitetrash - 28-1-2009 at 07:53 PM

The invite is definately open to anyone Buds!

The best wind lately has been from about 1p - 4p, but I will be out there early A.M to get anyone settled in. Let's plan on me being out there by 9am if anyone wants me to because I live only about 15 minutes away from the field. The wind can be flaky there so plan to kite up accordingly and plan on an OOBE gust! BeamerBob and I have adopted the name "OOBE Field" for the place because the inland winds can get punchy. We've been flying 4.5 - 7 meters lately with good success but the occasional spanking comes along.

I'll bring waivers to the field for anyone that needs them, kitedog, harddrive8; I've got you covered--I'll email them to you and anyone who needs one ahead of time.

keep in mind, we should make the decision a day or so ahead of time based on the forecast. Also, not exptecting this, but there are several Polo groups that practice on the field and this is not the season BUT they take priority if they show up. Usually only for a couple hours though. I've only been skunked 1 time last year. I'll try to find out if there is anything going on from the owner but the groups don't really communicate, they just have carte blanche to come and go.

I'll try as many as I can. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and putting faces with names. I could also use a little schoolin on my buggy skills.

I can get a copy to Sandman to fill out. We'll probably be coming together.

BeamerBob - 28-1-2009 at 08:23 PM

If the wind will blow it doesn't matter which direction. All is good. Nothing will help you learn like being around others that do it and share their learning with you. Really great to get together with nuts like yourself too.

harddrive8 - 29-1-2009 at 05:25 AM

What is the most accurate website to forecast the wind for that area, or is there one that gets close?

mgatc - 29-1-2009 at 06:18 AM

Windmapper.com

pokitetrash - 29-1-2009 at 06:27 AM

Another good weather web site is:

http://www.usairnet.com/cgi-bin/launch/code.cgi?Submit=Go&am...

This link is set to an airport in Augusta Ga, about 15 minutes away from the Beech Island field.

You can assign your local or any other airport to observe and it shows fairly accurate wind forecasts. The site is a good resource for light aviation, paragliders, hang gliders and such. No kite stuff yet, we should petition them to add some links for us.

tridude - 30-1-2009 at 07:20 AM

http://www.pdfamily.com/weather/buoy/SEbuoy.php

If youre on the east coast or heading that way, this site links with NWS' bouy observations to include wind/direction, swell height, interval, and extended forecast............................

tridude - 30-1-2009 at 07:27 AM

early indicators................weather sites agree on wind speed/direction on the 7th, SSW at 7mph, temp low 60s, maybe a bit of thermal lift around 2ish??? The AST (anti skunk tool) and lil brother will be there for sure.................

BeamerBob - 1-2-2009 at 07:05 AM

A steady 7 is good enough to make tracks. Peaks of 7 with normal winds at 3 is frustrating. We'll have to keep an eye out as the forecasts get more reliable, and maybe more encouraging.

pokitetrash - 2-2-2009 at 04:58 AM

Just a tip to travellers, there isn't much in the way of food very close. Subway is closest at about 20 minutes and there are several convenience stores nearby, one at the corner by the field. I'll have my RV with fridge storage, microwave and sodas and water but you may want to pack a cooler. There is a great biker bar & grill across the street but they don't open until 4pm.

BeamerBob - 2-2-2009 at 05:41 AM

Life is getting crowded for me Saturday. I have a basketball practice to go to and then a baseball practice to drop my 9 yr old off to at 1:00. Then I can probably work out the rest of the afternoon for some kiting. Weather channel is still saying 7 mph.

tridude - 2-2-2009 at 12:01 PM

Pokite,

Do you have a ac outlet/generator on your mobile home? I may need it to plug in my leaf blower/inflator, or Ill bring the battery operated one................

kitedog - 2-2-2009 at 01:24 PM

I've got one of those battery jumpstart/compressor deals I usually haul around. That'll work lacking any other power source.

pokitetrash - 2-2-2009 at 03:06 PM

Tridude, I have full external A/C power, onboard 6500kw gen. I vision using the leaf blower like an ACME rocket pack in case we have no wind as well as a puff up for your inflato-o-matic kite. Bring plenty of extension cords in case we want to park and ride!

tridude - 2-2-2009 at 08:27 PM

Im seeing 10 mph in Cola on windmapper, 8 in Augusta so who knows. I may have a 19m addition to add to the mix Saturday. Its coming in from AZ, so it may be early next week...........The Synergy will go up for sure, along with the 9.6m anti skunk tool................................:duh::thumbup:

tridude - 3-2-2009 at 06:01 AM

I drug the little google guy down to the location on Storm Branch Rd, dayummmm, thats a big field! Winds are looking a bit better on intellicast, same direction, SSW...........

BeamerBob - 3-2-2009 at 06:49 AM

So you are good from about 3 mph to about 40 then right?

kitedog - 3-2-2009 at 07:38 AM

Is Beech Island a beach or an island? :puzzled:

BeamerBob - 3-2-2009 at 09:12 AM

The name actually comes from an island in the Savannah River just to the west. I guess there is a beach there or at least a mud bank. No mud on the kite field though! Frequently mowed grass and they irrigate in the summer. It's not quite as smooth as a sod farm but just as good in every other way. I'm sure I've broken 25 mph there and with a lower tire pressure, it is a piece of cake.

I'm finding ways to shirk my other responsibilities enough to get there a little earlier.

pokitetrash - 4-2-2009 at 06:20 AM

Shirk away oh Great Bob of the Beamer! It won't be right to have all that fun without you all day. Do you want me to call your wife? I'm pretty good at shirking, actually that's my secret super power, so call me and I'll swoop in yelling --"Heeere I Come To Save The DAAAAAY!"

Really, I won't mind. I use my powers for good.

BeamerBob - 4-2-2009 at 07:08 AM

You don't call my wife and I won't call yours to help you out either. :ninja: Didn't you say she is out of town this weekend? Boy that made this tough for you didn't it? :D I've missed 2 days this week with over 15 mph winds getting chores done around the house. I think I've built up enough goodwill to avoid the chin music on Saturday. I've even got her shopping trip arranged to further my cause. And then its only a week till Fernandina. 3 days on the beach wide open. This weekend will be a good tune up to get ready for the beach.

tridude - 4-2-2009 at 10:31 AM

Ive got everyone from Folly on speed dial except for Phree......................are you coming Phree? If so Ill bring the 13m SS........................Mgtac/MKB are you coming?

BeamerBob - 4-2-2009 at 10:41 AM

windmapper is showing 6-10 and rotating around to the south during the afternoon. South winds would be the most clean at OBE field I think.

mgatc - 4-2-2009 at 10:49 AM

I'll weigh in this evening or tomorrow. You guys that have been married for a while know that it's all about the timing...................;-)

Josh (MKB) will be on a snowboarding trip this weekend.

Wind actually looks better on Sunday.

tridude - 4-2-2009 at 10:51 AM

sounds good, you all will be cruising big time at 10 with the AST........the XXL should be plenty as well @ 10...............hope to get a fix on the Synergys low end...........tweak the depower in and fly unhooked!!!!!!!:duh:

BeamerBob - 4-2-2009 at 10:59 AM

The 7m Blurr's are at home with 10 mph as well. The 4.9 Reactor is even viable but the Blurr will be the one coming out of my bag in these winds. I have an 8.3 Reactor on the short list. Should have it by April.

kitedog - 4-2-2009 at 12:13 PM

Not trying to hijack the thread but...who's bringing junk to Beech Island to trade or sell? I'm bringing a Dakine Fusion seat harness, a 4 mtr Mac Bego, a 10.5 Blade III w/depower mod, and an MBS Comp 6 with stainless bearings. No pressure...just bring your junk!

BeamerBob - 4-2-2009 at 07:44 PM

My Beamer will be there. A club member that hasn't picked up a kite of his own yet expressed some interest in it, but it isn't spoken for. Great time for a swap shop at a get together like this.

PHREERIDER - 5-2-2009 at 06:47 AM

i would like to try the seat harness and the board both mine are handicapped & geriatric.

i gott this FS 9.5 and i'll put it out there got it from powerzone can't seem to work into the rotation

PHREERIDER - 5-2-2009 at 07:00 AM

AH , what about the wind

BeamerBob - 5-2-2009 at 07:18 AM

Looks like its a big kite day. :dunno:

tridude - 5-2-2009 at 07:19 AM

Ill go out on a limb.............................looking at the triad (Augusta, Cola, OBurg) on windmapper, Im gonna guess 9 to 12 between 12 and 1600.....................thats 4pm for you civilians (thats right Im a civilian now as well):duh:

Tri I'm still interested in that XXX. That would be a nice way to top out my quiver of fixed bridles even after I get the 8.3 Reactor. I can probably pull it off Saturday if you don't need to part with the lines and handles. If not, I'll have to keep saving a bit.

tridude - 5-2-2009 at 07:30 AM

sounds good, fly it like you stole it Saturday. Power rings installed, just about got her dialed in. Im gonna try and get out this morning if it ever warms up. Winds are about 10ish, Ill try and get a pic or 2 static and on the board..................still crispy as a freshly poured bowl of Capt Crunch..........

is the almighty Zen master of kiting (ACampbell) available?

Crispy? Heck I bet the bridles are just getting snugged up on it.

Angus is predisposed this weekend but sends wind and his best wishes.

pokitetrash - 5-2-2009 at 01:59 PM

Maaaan! I can't wait! If anyone wants to fly Sunday, I'll be around again and plan to fly anyway and l would love the company. If anyone who travels far needs a place to crash overnight, I can sleep 4 in the RV. It'll just be my son and I this weekend so it's a man weekend all around. Is everyone clear on directions? If anyone needs a phone number for good measure, U2U me and I'm sure BeamerBob will offer travel assistance as well. When you're driving into Beech island, you'll be here when you hear the banjo music....

BeamerBob - 5-2-2009 at 06:14 PM

I'm happy to offer phone support any way I can. I'll be on my way about 12:15 which should put me there about 1:00. I'll be available by phone all morning though. U2U for cell number.

BeamerBob - 6-2-2009 at 04:45 AM

windmapper shows a consistent 9 mph all afternoon. That makes for a fun day with friends. I'm starting to let myself get excited now! :singing:

yep just noticed that.................just to the north in Greenwood its 12/13 and about the same in Cola so it should be a good day. Just in case, Im making 7 meter extensions for the Synergy. Installed that will put her at 35m, make a bit of apparent, rollin ......................so coming west on I 20, what is the best way to get there. I looked at the SC highway 19 option...............thoughts?:spin::puzzled:

Im coming in on 302 from Wagoner, which runs right into Storm Branch Rd..........we always cut across OBurg/Aiken counties when we go to Aiken (North, Wagoner/Salley, New Holland)........

This is the best route if you were coming in on I-20.
Goggle maps coming West on I-20

Tridude, Hwy 78/278 might be more direct for you unless you need to stop and have breakfast with the sister-in-law. That's actually how we came to Folly. I made 20 minutes better time coming home going through Columbia though. And no I didn't take up the landing gear. That's at 10 over the limit when traffic allowed.

just finished up 8m extensions (Q power lines) but if the winds are like this tomorrow, they wont be needed!!!!!:duh:
