That's a pretty cool looking leading edge..

WolfWolfee - 4-3-2009 at 09:39 AM

very sweet, always been one of my favorite kites to fly.

Krohn1999 - 4-3-2009 at 11:37 AM

don't hold your breath, they have been working on them for a very long time and the last I heard they are still only Prototypes like the ones that are shown in the pictures.
Hossi would be a good sorce of info if anybody wants to know how far along they are.

Nice! Looks just a little fatter than the combat. that may put it in between. that would be good. The combat Imo had good upwind ability but was too fast for me. I would like to try this one. Thanks for sharing Ric.

I have flown the 3.5m proto, as has the wife. It's a sweet kite.

bluebyte - 14-9-2009 at 02:36 AM

i was one of the first here in germany to fly the 3.5m and (just shortly) the 4.5 m. i can assure you that they are extremely nice and amazing kites !
they power up softly when the wind picks up and handle very well in gusty conditions. i flew the 3.5m in very gusty winds and never had any scary moments or bigger problems. i have a 3.7m Wolkenstuermer Elektra that i would not have touched that day, and even my 2.9 Reactor was a bit nasty and scary in the upper gusts. But the 3.5m Century II replaced both of those kites perfectly.

there was absolutely no danger of lifting and i really liked the soft power increase in gusts. when you start them sitting in the buggy they need a bit air to kind of prefill, which means the danger of being yanked out then is much less. also great upwind riding ability. it´s been a long time that i had so much fun at high and gusty winds without being scared (i am more of a careful rider ;-)

i can fully recommend them and think that they are outstanding kites, try them if you can !

I had a go at these kites at SOBB. BigKid had a set.
I'll write up a small review after work.

I got back from SOBB late last night and I have to say I had my best day yesterday with the Soulflys. The wind was 10mph give or take a bit, from the SW. I was a little apprehensive about the 4.5 as the choice to buggy with because my grand daughter was to get the 1st ride and Mom was not a happy camper about it. I started out with a 2.0 Brooza and had to work it to go but very enjoyable. "Lets go faster Grandpa", I couldnt find the 3.0 Brooza so out came the 4.0 Buster. Very forgiving and very stable kite. Now its long rides up and down the beach. Then I hear those great words again and out comes the 4.5 Soulfly.
I was having a blast, park the kite and cruise at 35mph with her on the back buggy. With Dad on the back buggy, 260lbs I didn't feel much difference in the dead weight of the buggy or the kite
The kite is very gentle and forgiving when I start to learn the kite. It is very responsive, quick and powerful when you put it to the test. I didn't have any problem with the kite getting out of hand or being to much for the situation. Not a full fledged race kite but not a beginner kite either, I would say that PKD created a winner with this kite, to fill the spot between intermediate, to expert. If you are wanting a full blown race kite, this is as close as you can get with out the cost or the advanced skill to fly it. If you want a passive easy going, not to much power or lift, this kite will fill in the space.
I am not a kite jumper but the 4.5 was giving some 3" pendulum jumps to a heavy 220lb guy in 10mph winds.

PKD have always had outstanding graphics. The Soulfly is designed with a new twist on the traditional graphics. Very eye catching kites.

It is important to note I lost touch with PKD product at the Brooza II / Century stage and haven't flown recent models.

Kites come with standard PKD handles. They have a unique cleat set-up for the brake leaders adjustment. I own a set and yet still tied a knott to shorten the brakes .

I got to try the 4.5m in pretty low wind for it's size. About 8 mph ? I owned a 3m Brooza I and as soon as I popped this kite up it was like going back. The hesitation as it fills was the 1st familiar trait. The Soulfly II has more inlets that are set under the leading edge so inflation was faster. It filled by the time I had flown it to the edge. PKD's inlets mean you have to launch a bit different but you get used to it and it isn't a problem.

Just like my Brooza the Soulfy II would fall back and needed to keep moving ( in lower than average winds ) It is not a beginers kite. It is a racey kite for sure. It felt like it may be a bit lifty when flown high and fast but clearly liked producing power down low. I think it can best be described as an improved Brooza rather than Century.

Later in the day I got to take a quick spin on the 10m in a little less wind. This is a classic , an object in motion wishes to stay in motion thing. Once you got it inflated and moving it just wanted to go faster and faster. This was more like the Century but in a tamed down way.

I'm so happy to see PKD is back. It is a good product that hasn't been properly represented lately.

All riding was done on ATB.

Thanks BigKid for the Demo!
