15-30mph winds - uhh I was a little overpowered at times to put it lightly :shocked2:

1st jump was intentional. the 2nd and 3rd were more or less me trying to go down wind to blow off some of the massive power and speed from a couple 30mph gusts.

it was definitely a fun session. the wingtips on the p4 collapsed a few times but like everybody has said before. it doesn't really jerk you around much it just looks like it might

it would have been a perfect day for the 12m Phanny but after riding in that chop for about an hour my legs were burning bad!

the wide angle camera doesn't really show it but the waves were about 2-3 ft

try refreshing it. it was doing that to me on the first load but it would work as soon as I refreshed it. I think its because I just uploaded it less than an hour ago.

there isn't actually any music along with this one.

I know what you mean though. facebook notified me that I had some kind of a copyright violation on a video I posted on there. I'm gonna quit adding music to them. it takes a long time to make everything match up and I don't think many people really care about it anyway

now you're riding! looks like you had some nice wind to work with. why did you let go at the end ?

the trim strap flopping around the bar .. looks like you had it trim all the way.

that's a nice spot to ride looks fairly flat

cool vid what was the music?

the wide angle lens makes it look a LOT flatter then the water really was. it was pretty harsh 2-3ft (waist high) breaking chop

I let go at the end because that jump was pretty much initiated by my trying to bring the kite to zenith because I was getting maxed out on speed and power. the kite lifted me and spun me around and I wasn't sure if it was going to start dragging me at the end. on top of that I really was about 5-10mph over the max for that kite so I decided it was time to pack it up.

I went out on a 12m 09 Ocean Rodeo Rise after I got the P4 squared away and the rise handled the gusts better but just had very very little lift compared to the P4.

I think jumping with tubes must be totally different then foils because I haven't figured out how to get lift without flinging myself really hard on a redirect

tried to refresh 5-6 times and still says video no longer exists

I wanna watch it because I have used the P4 15 and 10m on water last week during a vacation and above the 20 knots the 15m is a serious pull.

I had no problem holding the 10m at 25 knots though

finally got it work in HQ but watching is slower (with many pauses)


if the water was choppy (looks flat) like you said, so I guess you were riding pretty fast, especially with the kite kept very low most of the time

or is it just an illusion ?

do you think you could have hold more power by controlling your speed or flying the kite higher ??

the water looking flat is definitely an illusion. I live on hood canal and the spot I was riding has about 15 miles of exposed water upwind from where I was riding and its probably about 2-4 miles wide through that whole 15mile stretch so it definitely gives waves an opportunity to build up. Wide angle lenses have horrible depth perception so that made it look pretty flat. I'm 6ft tall and about 195lbs and the waves were waist high on me once I got out from the beach a ways.

At the start of the video i'm only in about a foot of water and that part was actually pretty flat but once I get out from the beach a little bit it quickly turns into 2-3ft chop that has some punch to it. I almost wiped out a couple times because I had waves breaking on my board.

my Kailua video looks the same and that was in 3-4ft rollers some of them just about surfable.

I think the 15m is best suited for about 18mph winds. 20mph is managable as long as you go slow. 25 is down right scary and those gusts that I'm guessing were up around 30mph were basically survival mode. I tried bringing the kite up and going down wind to counter the pull but bringing the kite up just lifted me and going down wind just made me build even more board speed.

I bought a 10m P4 from Ted (flysurfer usa) last weekend so I'm hoping it will be a better kite for those conditions. that kite still hasn't shown up yet though. I haven't heard from ted yet and I'm kinda wondering what the deal is...:dunno:

today I took the 12m Phanny out in the same stuff after work. went out for a relatively short session (only about 30mins water time) because the tide was coming in quick and when the tide is high I have no launch/landing area. the phantom handled the gusts WAAAY better. it just sort of blobbed around like a giant jelly fish. occasionally it would really start to get me moving fast. I have found there is a hot spot in front of my house where the wind is very manageable on either side but right in the middle you can basically add 10mph or at least thats how it feels. consistently every time I run through that spot its like somebody hits the afterburner on the kite and if I didn't head down wind I'd get lifted off my edge!

I guess another point of reference could be that a buddy of mine who weighs about 138lbs went out on a 10m 08 Ocean Rodeo Rise and he was getting blown off the water. he ended up heading back out on a 9m Naish Cult and was able to ride for awhile on that.

I was kinda worried about how the 10m was going to handle higher winds. I know some smaller foils seem to be more intended for low wind snowkiting instead of high wind water use. I haven't seen too much in the way of reviews of heavier riders using the 10m on the water so its good to see somebody 185lbs can hold it down nicely in 25kts. you really mean 25kts not mph right??? because thats more like 28-29mph winds! if that's true then damn that kite is going to be perfect for around here :wee:
