The Powerkites.de World-Tour comes to the Outer Banks of North Carolina – famous for wind and the birthplace of flight.
On April 18th we stop at Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head, North Carolina – the largest natural sand dunes on the East Coast.
Located just across the street from the Kitty Hawk Kites flagship store www.kittyhawk.com
Here you can test fly all the new power kites on the soft, forgiving sands.
Access to the shallow waters of the Albemarle Sound is available behind the park.
That evening we’ll meet for a refreshments and BBQ at the Blue Crab Tavern www.seabbaticals.com , courtesy of HQ Kites.

On April 19th the tour continues south to Hatteras Island and the village of Waves, one of the best kite boarding destinations in the country.
The best surf on the East Coast can also be found on the Atlantic Ocean side.
Kitty Hawk Kites will host us at their new store and kite boarding resort, where miles of shallow waters and constant winds create an amazing flat
water riding paradise.
An ideal environment to try the HQ NEO and Hydra. Join us for a test ride and deck party.

Well...I WAS on my way 2nite, but an eye injury from this morning convinced me I shouldn't be out driving at dark. So, maybe I will make it down there
later Sat. or Sun....:megan:

It was a fine weekend. Thanks to everyone that stopped by to fly with us.

Did not get many pics on Sunday in Hatteras, as I was in the water most of the day giving lessons and riding.
Cheers!

I made it down there late Sat.. I got to demo a Neo 6m (even if I swiped the HQ banners trying to launch ). I was surprised how I could hold my ground
with it in those 18-26 MPHs. Thanks to Chris and all others for their patience (one guy there was continually slamming a demo Beamer 3m into the dune
with a near-metronomic rhythm - a sure testimony to their durability!) :tumble:
If it wasn't so windy, (or I wasn't so chicken), I would have later pulled out my Montana 9.5 to attempt a little off the hill glide.
Jockey's Ridge is like a dream come true. It's an amazing location, with great views, and a 100' dune that is as close to the South West (or Lawrence
of Arabia) as us Easterners will ever see out here!
There is also some small, hard-packed patches between the dunes - below sea-level - that you might be able to board over. The buggy riding status
there is nebulous - I was told they don't mind it so much off season - but you'd need a Bigfoot for sure. You can also get a permit to sandboard
there, but it's only allowed until the end of March.
I returned there Sun. for my 1st Hang Glider lesson (after visiting the Wright Brothers Memorial for inspiration). Would you believe it, no wind at
all....until we were just ready to cancel. Then we saw a little action. "Action," as defined for me, was a crash landing my first attempt. (Remember,
to "Flare" upon landing means to PUSH OUT, not "Pull in" depower style!)
Kitty Hawk Kites (their new Hatteras store is awesome) also offers an incredible tandem hang glider experience - for total beginners. You get towed up
2000' and glide down for a landing! (I think I would add some Depends to my undergear before I try that one!)
Just before the park closed that Sun. evening, I had only time to grab and run back with my Bateman fighter kite. I was all alone on the dunes,
zipping from the Atlantic side to the Roanoke Sound as sun set. Really kiting nirvana.
I might go back there for the June Rogallo Fest...and maybe see if the 97 yr old inventor will sign one of my NASAwings!

Any chance you'll send representatives to Wildwood Buggy Bash?(HQ Powerkites World Tour)
lad - 21-4-2009 at 11:16 AM
The German team told me this was their last stop - but single HQ reps would be at some of the East Coast Fests - Ocean City, Wildwood...etc.
