list of places in NorCAL

Dagon - 21-4-2009 at 02:09 PM

Please post with your favorite northern CA buggy location.
I am looking for other places to buggy now that Ocean Beach is under lock and key.
Other beaches would be great.

Shoreline Park?

DAKITEZ - 21-4-2009 at 04:04 PM

I wish I had a spot for ya, but i can tell you where its not runnable to save you some searching. I cruised the coast from Pacifica to Santa Cruz and there is nothing. There is also nothing to speak of in santa Cruz either. I also went north of OB to point reyes and i think you already know the situation up there. the beaches were too steep and we were banned from all but one beach. there is stinson beach, which might work but I think it might be more populated than OB. Plus they have life guards on that beach, so we will probably get run off.

I did find one spot, but never got a chance to run it yet. The first time I saw it , it was perfect, but the next time I went back it was real steep. I think it may have to do with the time of the year. About this time of the year last year is when I saw it and it was perfect. It is in Moss Landing just south of the marina. The best thing about it is there is no people (and no life guards) and you can run south for miles with no people, because there is no beach access. Again i have not run it yet, but I will be there the up coming holiday at the end of May.

Did anyone ever try Dillon Beach, just north of Pt Reyes?
How about the Alameda on Oakland. The old Navy base has 2 defunkt runways, and tons of space.

Dillon beach is cool in the evening when you get the onshore breeze. It does however really fill up with people but you can get some good evening runs all the way towards Lawson's Landing. There is also Doran Campground, not the best as the wind there is generally offshore so you kite is always over water. One false move and you are pulling out a new dry kite. Another place, not the greatest but generally open is Salmon Creek, north of Bodega Bay on the 1.

I was at Doran during spring break and did notice a couple of flocks of those damn birds, but nothing mentioned about Doran in the county regs posted in another thread.

Attached is a pic (hopefully) of my 12 year old flying a 7m kite in low wind (thankfully) at Doran. No children were harmed during the photo taking. He did have one big ass grin on his face though. Thank goodness for handles on harnesses! :wee:

I used to buggy at NAS Alameda quite a bit. The gates were always locked during the week but open Sundays. I talked to the city guy a couple of years ago and he assured me that while it was still a federal offense to be out there Sundays, the authorities looked the other way. And that proved to be the case; there were kids on minibikes, people learning to drive, etc. But none of this was on the runway area, it was all ramp/movement area adjacent to the runways. A shame, because the runways are 'X' shaped and paved into a giant square. Unfortunately, the runways are a protected nesting area for the least tern, the second most hated bird after our friend the snowy plover!

Well, bad news. I went down there a couple of weeks ago on a Sunday and the ENTIRE ramp area was a huge construction area! Huge piles of dirt, equipment and shipping containers! Completely unbuggyable and fenced off to boot. I then spent the next two hours scouring the island for possible sites but drew a blank. There was a possible spot at the very northern tip where there was some kind of a car event going on, but it looked quite inaccesable.

Bad news all around. Thank God for Shoreline, but with concert season coming up- and a busy one at that- who knows how many days'll be available. So, anybopdy with a spot please let us know! It's almost time to pool our money and buy a few acres!

hey I found something in davis again.....its right off the freeway by the davis soccer club near the causeway on the south side.....I noticed no keep out signs and I here it may be a polo training area....I know one thing about polo...horse hooves do way more damage then buggys...I a have already looked at it and its about 1500 feet wide and long.,..althought its lined with power or phone lines....but there was no fence gate or signs....the ground in hard dirt with stiff little mowed weeds coming through...the run would be smooth except for slight undulations....and its not a place for jumping or scuds.....I am going this friday to try it

which makes me wonder if there is another polo training grounds somewhere....

Hey I have been thinking about this for a while has anyone seen any inland roads with no fences poles or trees...like a long country road way in the delta or flat areas to the south...we should keep our Ieyes peeled... I have always wanted to do a long road run

where is dillon beach? google coordinates please. what town is it near?

nhlrule56 - 23-4-2009 at 10:16 AM

Dillon is close to Tamales (out of Petaluma) and on the way to Doran and Salmon. The last two are essentially Bodega Bay. Easy 1.5 hour drive from Sac.

Dillon Beach - 38 15'03.90"N / 122 57'53.43"W
Doran Beach - 38 18'48.64"N / 123 02'22.94"W
Salmon Creek - 38 21'04.42"N / 123 03'45.80"W

If you go to Dillon Beach, camp at Lawsons Landing.
If you go to Doran or Salmon Creek, you can camp at Doran Campground or Bodega Dunes.

where is the davis sod farm? is buggying allowed?

art_lessing - 23-4-2009 at 07:32 PM

so I flew at this place that I thought was a polo field...turns out is was a hay field as they were harvesting...I flew today for about 30 min...no trouble from the field guys working out there...it was the end of the day and it looked like they did not care in the least.....no buggying today just static...it would be a bit rough to bugy out there but it could also be fun.....I was flying my legend 5.5 and was way over powered in the wind that was super steady...rare for around here....its always a fun little humbling reminder when you static fly on handles with no harness in over powered conditions ...arms being pulled out of their sockets, eyes glued to the kite, that moonwalk feeling where all you have to do is get light on your feet and your in the air........anyway.....its was fun with no trouble...and no signs saying keep out.......
