Rye/Hampton Beach Buggying (New Hampshire)?

bigben91682 - 1-5-2009 at 12:57 PM

I'm going to be over on the NH coast a few times this summer. Is buggying allowed on the beaches?? I'll be in Rye, but ANywhere on the NH coast is east to get to once you're over there....

I'm pretty sure it is banned in Seabrook, Hampton and Rye. I could be wrong but there used to be a kiting store in Seabrook and I'm pretty sure that during the beach going season the towns only allowed kite surfing and no land based kiting.

You can kite on Ogunquit beach (I was there last weekend) which is right over the boarder in ME but its a long way to haul your gear from the parking lot to the unprotected section of the beach.

I'm not sure if its banned, but none of those beaches would be much good for buggying anyhow. Actually I think that kites are banned on Hampton beach all summer. I don't think they even launch kites to kitesurf there. And even if it wasn't banned there isn't enough room to do anything but static fly on any of those beaches in the summer because of the crowds.

Off season I think you could buggy Jenness beach, maybe. But you'd need a mostly low tide and straight onshore or offshore (dirty) winds.

The NH coast isn't very long at all and the beaches are small and narrow. I don't know much about ME spots, but I'm going to try to get out and scout them soon.

My thought with Rye was that after the lifeguards leave at 5, all bets are off in terms of "rules". People come out with dogs, bikes etc. Plus the crowds clear out and you have 2-3 hours of uncrowded 'unregulated(?)' beach. So if all stars aligned: low tide and good wind in the evening, it may be doable. I know the beach isn't that long, but compared to the inland fields I ride it would be a nice change.

Just thinking out loud at this point.

B-Roc, Ogunquit is probably a doable drive from Rye. I've been there once ages ago but it seems like a wide beach and is probably pretty good bug ride.

Do you park on the South End? Where does the 'unrestricted' beach start?? I don't mind a little (or long) walk.

The unrestricted part begins wherever the lifeguards put the yellow rope but its usally near the "footbridge" and I don't think there is any parking on 1A near the footbridge.

The unrestricted section must be the North section. If you can park at the beach lot it will cost you ($5 an hour I think) but that's the shortest walk and with all the gear you'll be towing, its still not that short a walk but if you want to ride :wee: you got to do what you got to do. :dunno:

I'm gonna do my best to make it up to there, I don't mind a little walking.
