I need some help spreader bar..

madkiltkiter - 7-5-2009 at 06:09 PM

Hay I need some help..
I have been having some problems with my kite popping out of the spreader bar.
it mainly happens when I'm riding toe-side really hard against the kite.
well needless to say instant belly flop at speed.
I am using the flexi-foil extreme bar & dekine 10" generic spreader bar with pad.
I bought 2 more donkey dicks from flexi foil because I thought that was the
problem. (but it was not).
I contacted flexi-foil to let them know and to get there advice, and this was there response,

from: Oli Thorman

Flexifoil International Ltd.
Unit 9
"""""""Are you riding with a Dakine spreader bar if so this may well be your problem.""""""""""""""

so that brings me to another question what have you done to make your harness work better?

changed the spreader bar

dakine spreader has a larger hook (as you know), one fix would be to use a longer d.dick or angled d.dick
peter lynn spinning spreader bar hook (bottom of pic) is narrow and holds the d.dick in better.

Try a roller spreader bar. I have been using these for years and rarely have a pop off.

Scott, what keeps the loop attached on the roller bar when you pull your kite in?

speleopower - 10-5-2009 at 08:32 PM

I don't know. Seems to work well for me for the past 11 years. What do you mean by "pulling your kite in"? I'm guessing this is a new fangled hip depower kite flying term...:puzzled: I am old school.

Madkilt can you send us a pic of your setup? Ive never heard of chicken loop coming off with the donkey dick. I ride a dakine seat harness in which the spreader bar is clippen in with steal clips. When i ride hard toeside it actually is spreading the steel open, and no sign of the chicken loop coming off.

I've had lots of trouble with Ozone megatron CL's slipping off of my Dakine spreader bar. It hasn't happened to me using the Ozone harness/spreader bar which has a much narrower hook.

I'd recommend that you swap out the spreader bar.

I ride with PL bars and a PL swiveling swinging spreader bar. Every so often, under full power, the chicken loop will come off. Haven't lost the kite yet (death grip on the bar). I've caught it a couple of times when the loop is right on the edge of coming off.

Kinda figure it has to do with the donkey dick wedging the loop off when the hook spins or leans. Doubt I could recreate it in a controlled setting though. I just keep a watch on it when riding.
