Boarding w/o Bars

Drewculous - 2-6-2009 at 12:27 PM

Got offered a good deal on a flexi board, but ive only got handles, no bar...

Do boards and handles do well?

(i have no idea how that poll got up there but i apologize... no poll sorry)

Good question! I'd love to see the feedback on this since I'm in a very similar situation :)

f0rgiv3n - 2-6-2009 at 01:06 PM

I've only ever flown my ace on handles. Works great :). Look at this dude!:

Handles are fine on a board. Some people prefer them. Many fixed bridle kites can be flown on handles or a bar although I'm not familiar with the Twisters. Either way, scoop up the board if it's a deal.

I prefer boarding with a depower kite, but if I was riding a fixed bridles I'd probably prefer handles. I've just never gotten along well with fixed bridle kites on bars.

dylanj423 - 2-6-2009 at 01:35 PM

I have only just recently changed to depower/ bar setup on landboards. I learned to board with fixed bridles on handles... a great way to do it, if you ask me.

Wow.... both you guys have the same kite, and in the same situation. I say do it.... If you think you can control the kite well enough to fly blind, or iin any other wierd situation.... backwards, on your back, upside down... etc.

Boarding is great fun. I waited to get into depowers, but now that I have, I love it more. Better for jumping:wee:

haha thats funny mougl... stop following me around! lol

great minds think alike:wee:

thanks for the input guys... deal was too sweet to pass up i oS-P-A-M-L-I-N-K-d it as soon as i could!

The twister comes as a bar option from PL so it should work just fine, but i have never personally tried it. My thought is fixed bridle kites are best on handles. The only reason to use a bar is for a de-power kite.

B-Roc - 2-6-2009 at 04:52 PM

I agree with Dakitez. Fixed bridle kites can be flown on a bar but fly better on handles and you can board without issue on handles - see my avatar. Unless you are flying depowerables handles are fine. I have a bar for my fixed bridle kites and its nice in the winter or when the winds are dead smooth, but if you need to work the kite at all or fly in sketchy conditions, handles are way better than a bar (haven't flown with my bar in about 3 years now).

dont forget elbow and knee pads.... you may want some impact shorts later. a lot to put on, but if you like to push yourself, you will need these things. and they are cheaper than one trip to the emergency room.

ripsessionkites - 3-6-2009 at 07:54 AM

i fly everything on handles ... it takes a bit of getting use to when you let go of one handle for the first time. as long as you have a harness on you can still control your kite with one hand. remember that when you bail, that most FB that still have tension will re-open and pull you some more. bowties will happen more often if you start jumping.
safety for handles, cheap method, take one of your KK and extend it a few inches longer, add a ----< (Y section to split off), you attach those to the same way you did your regular KK. the wrist part will go to your harness. (basically) a cheap leash system, however the Wrist straps if set loose enough can be putting apart as well.

like dino said, the twister can use a bar, i will say its not the greatest bar system but its cheap and it works if you're riding a board. riding a board doesnt require a lot of fine tuning, as with a sitting in a buggy.

if you plan on only riding FB kites for your buggy and board, than the cheapest method i can think of is buy the Ozone Bar.

Drewculous - 3-6-2009 at 09:54 AM

i want to get into a depower eventually, but ive only been flyin for a few months, gotta give it some time.

rip: as far as the harness goes, you are just running a strop through a spreader bar correct?

If thats the case i need to spend a more time in less then perfect conditions before i tie myself to the kite... i think the few times ive needed to bail, if i was attatched to this thing id be hurtin'

but good to know i can still use my handles, i dont think id like to give up this level of control to a bar

(damn thoes bowties... never used that phrase, but i know exactly what you are talking about!!!)

yes, just using a Strop / Link Line. you can still kite without a harness, np. however i like wearing a harness even if im going to muscle the kite the whole time. IMO i would rather have my wrist and hands free and let my harness take the pull of the "let go kite".

DAKITEZ - 3-6-2009 at 10:48 AM

who is that little kid riding that board in the videos

12 year old asian guy. MR 108.2

handles or a bar

slide - 6-6-2009 at 12:52 PM

i fly both for landboarding ,and reckon its good practice to know both. get a captive roller system for the fixed bridle on handles..to landboard properly you need power , and to handle it you'll need to be harnessed in

Perhaps something like the PL Swivel Pulley Spreader Bar:

dunno what harness your getting and what spreader bar you have. if its a hook style spreader bar, i would first turn it upside down, so the hook curves up, it will be easier to get out of should something happen as well. when your hook is facing down you'll have to deal with trying to get the strop / link line - down and out, the other way you can just roll it off.

WOW! that is the best advise I have heard in a long time. I can not believe I never thought of that  So simple and makes perfect sense. That is definitely the tip of the week! He might look like he is 12, but he is wise beyond his years for sure

arkay - 9-6-2009 at 08:48 AM

For cruising I could see a roller bar or hooking into the spreader hook directly, but if you're going to get air or ride aggressively... I would think if you want to stay on handles... it would be safer to use a pulley and quick release. Unless you have constant upward pull on the lines/strop I'd be freaked that the stop line would fall out.

Here's someone's QR from the gallery

<running to the garage to see how this will work>

ripsessionkites - 9-6-2009 at 09:57 AM

there is a link-line / strop quick release system as well that someone home-made. dunno the link.

Drewculous - 9-6-2009 at 10:55 AM

good call on the upside down spreader bar... im sure that'll save me lots of pain lol!

ripsessionkites - 10-6-2009 at 12:51 AM

i found it ... right under my nose too. LOL

ask Angus to get you a QR Harness Line. see pic
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o7/ripsessionkites/Misc/p...

back in the day before Strops / Link Lines we use to Windsurf harness lines. the nice thing about them they already had the natural curve. the rubber/plastic line material lasts almost forever.

youll want to attach the Harness Line just under the Power / Leader lines. with the kite under tension your handles will point outwards a little giving you natural less brake tension making the kite go faster when its at 2 o'clock in the sky.

Is that the Peter Lynn Seat Harness in this photo? I've been considering buying one. How do you like it?

I have a Ozone Access XC harness that is riding too high on me. I have cinched as far down as I can and yet it still makes contact with my ribs when my Scorp flies high. The XC a one size fits most harness, but the one size does not fit my 31 inch waist very well.

The PL seat harness looks super low waisted. I am I right? Does it keep the hook low under load?

Philip

yes thats the old PL seat harness. the reason why i said old is that they are introducing a new harness both in Seat and Waist. I tried the Seat Version at NABX and its more form fitting and feels like a second skin. sits low, and feels comfortable sitting or standing with it.

if you can wait, wait for it.

the seat harness can be adjusted to sit low or high with the back side straps and the leg straps. also there is a removable velcro pad on the inside for adjustment.

i use it with either the Hook or the Swivel Pulley. I actually like the Hook Spreader from PL since it fits the PL Donkey Dick in nicely with the smaller hole on the spreader.

the one drawback, is that it feels 100% comfortable when you add the Spreader Bar Pad, when the kite is pulling Upwards. with no pad you can feel the spreader bar a lot more. im skinny so i dont have Keg for padding.

sizing S/M - 28 to 36 ... Large 37 to ?
I use the S/M.

I saw this posted on RK the other day and though it would be a good addition to this thread. Its 6 years old and I'm sure many have seen it, but it shows what can be done with handles and a board.
Linky
It really gets 'all-terrain' at the end!:shocked2:
