GoPro Camera users - FYI

Kamikuza - 7-6-2009 at 08:19 PM

I got a Hero Wide Motorsports - lame name but a sweet little pile o' kit for the price :)

Anyway, I recently discovered that they support any size SD card and despite what it says on the webpage, you CAN record in one file for as long as your batteries last!
I'm using an 8Gb SDHC card ... and here's how to fix the 2Gb file limit :wee:

I have one of the Oregon scientific atc2k cams- 'bout the size of a TP core. It only supports 2gb but at $70 for 640X480 video res not to shabby. I like the fact that you can get higher res stills from the Hero, though. Gizmos are cool.

Hey Kam,

I was definitely thinking about getting this camera...Some of the video shot with this looks pretty cool. Nice to know you can throw a bigger card in this...thanks for providing the link.

If you have time, please post a video link...like to see some more footage from the camera.

i have a bunch of these wides and normal angles. I have the delux kit if you need it. I"ve put the camera on my kites, paraglider, truck, kiteboard, mt. board. It even took a direct hit from the prop on a paramotor. I strongly recommend these and have them in stock!

I talked with Gopro and they are still working on there firmware upgrade.

one trick they mentioned though is that you can use any size SD card as long as you keep the single file sizes below 2gb (about an hour of video) so if you stop and start the camera every 45mins of riding you'll only be limited by the battery life and none of the videos will be corrupted.

nwsurfwakeskate - 8-6-2009 at 02:31 PM

I would say the link definitely provides a good method of recovering your video if you forgot to stop and start one below the 2gb limit

USA_Eli_A - 8-6-2009 at 02:53 PM

i've never experienced this corrupt error. make sure your card is formatted and don't switch it between cameras while you are out shooting

Kamikuza - 8-6-2009 at 09:10 PM

I'm betting the original software/hardware was developed for these cameras when Windows98 was the standard.
GoPro says to use a 2Gb SD card cos FAT16 will only support a 2Gb or less file. So to sell a perfectly working product they say to only use a 2Gb card.
Now that FAT32 and NTFS are the standard, larger files can be handled by Windows et al.

With the bigger SD cards available, by fluke or design, the hardware of the camera will use the whole card (I've got other SD devices that'll only use a card of up to X size) but due to the camera using FAT16 (my guess) it'll dump a 'corrupted' file. Using VDub you can sort this out ...

The moral is - you can use whatever size SD card you like to create whatever size file, so long as you 'fix' it in VDub once it's on your PC IF it's more than 2Gb/56mins. Or you can stop every 56 minutes to stop and start the recoriding ...

As to quality - it's designed to be played back at standard TV res, so it's not HD but it is very good for the money! Sound has 2 settings - HI and LO. LO is for 'high external noise' environments, like on a bike :) you gotta turn the sound way up to hear it but it is there ...

Here's a clip with it suction cupped to my bike. Even YouTube's HD is not as good quality as the file on my hdd though ...

From another kiting forum here's some pics etc - not of me

for users wanting it mostly for kitesurf, which model should be bought ?? can mounting parts be bought separately ?

I dont wear an helmet, so I was thinking to hook it up to the board

can it be attached to the leading edge of an inflatable kite like the pentax one

USA_Eli_A - 10-6-2009 at 08:33 AM

D-Man, there is a hero wide kit that retails for about 190.00 it has several attachments lots of adhesive tabs and clips. I found the helmet strap great for connecting kite to struts. good luck

Kamikuza - 10-6-2009 at 04:18 PM

Have a look at the homepage - the difference in cameras is widescreen or not (go with the widescreen IMO) and the rest is the mounts included in the kit. The Motor kit came with a suction cup and a bunch of adhesive ones ... you'd have to check the others to see what the actually include.
The leading edge thing - there's a company that sells that kit, but the link on my work PC ... I reckon you could DIY that no problem!

Update for the GoPro HD and a cross-reference ;)

HD video will import into Windows Live Movie Maker but not WMM2.6 and a bunch of other editing software like Vdub. Use MP4cam2avi to wrap the file in compatible .avi

GoPro HD writes almost 4Gb files automatically (max file size of FAT32) but has very weird naming conventions - check the file details for recorded time and date to get it straight. So my 8Gb SD card had 2x 3.7Gb files and a 350Mb file after running non-stop for about 90 minutes ...

Jaymz - 5-7-2010 at 09:55 PM

GoPro has a firmware update for NON-HD wide cameras to use up to 8GB cards here...

http://www.goprocamera.com/fwupgrade.php

Kamikuza - 5-7-2010 at 11:50 PM

I thought we already had this argument  don't need the update, you can use any sized SD card on a non-HD GoPro, just fix the file header if it goes over 2Gb - or maybe 4Gb if you've formatted the SD card with FAT32 ...

Basically I just wanted to pimp that mp4cam2avi software - works awesome for getting the files to edit. Damned VDub wouldn't work even with all the plugins for HD and .mp4/H.264 etc etc ...!

rocfighter - 6-7-2010 at 04:03 AM

I have the GoPro std lens non HD. I agree with Kami.:shocked2: I was not a fan of the distorsion of the wide angle lens. But it is very hard to keep a moving kite or anything else in the shot with the camera mounted and the std lens. Last week we took 2hrs of us fliing and got realy clear and cool pics of clouds and trees and sky. Oh and a few quick glimpses of a kite or two!!

pigryder - 6-7-2010 at 05:26 AM

I bought my Go Pro HD last christmas from a motorcycle stealership for 230.00, and it came with a bunch of sweet mounts including the big suction cup mount. You can purchase the mounts and a bunch of other stuff seperately, most of the vids on my youtube are with that camera, check them out theres a few really cool ones of riding dirtbikes and with the suction mount on my GTI

Todd - 6-7-2010 at 03:49 PM

@pigryder - shoot us a link to your videos!

Possibility's of this camera are completely endless, found this on Kite Crowd

Kamikuza - 6-7-2010 at 05:23 PM

I love those wee guys ...! They're everywhere here in the wild - and the wife rescued one from the surf at the beach in Hamamatsu last month! I'd love to have kept him but they need a huge aquarium for a good life. #@%$#!s here keep them in plastic tanks they can't even turn around in :( bet he's happy with that pool!
