"Backwards" kite jump = paraglider?

lad - 19-6-2009 at 08:42 AM

Is this feasible with most large depowers?

Maybe spin around once your up?

Kamikuza - 19-6-2009 at 08:45 AM

God knows I've thought about trying it :D

B-Roc - 19-6-2009 at 09:11 AM

clearly you've never seen Alex's vids...

lad - 19-6-2009 at 09:28 AM

Alex is still facing backwards, and can't enjoy the view! :spin:

B-Roc - 19-6-2009 at 09:36 AM

ahhh, now I understand what you were asking. I thought you were wondering if we could do what they do but you are asking if you can look into the wind as you go. I think that will be tough for extended periods of time.

lad - 19-6-2009 at 09:47 AM

yep - the guy in the top flysurfer video is facing the wind as he goes over the dune.

I would thing it's just a matter of spinning around on a spinning CL.

The controls would still be pretty much oriented correctly from your perspective.
The only question is the shift of balance on the other side.

Looks like to much fun. Until you mess up or something breaks and then we all know what will happen splat goes the kiter and here comes yet another ban.

elfasa - 19-6-2009 at 04:06 PM

that kite is huge !!!

is that a kite, of something different ? (paraglider?)

lad - 19-6-2009 at 04:45 PM

according to the Dutch guy's Youtube comments:
--------------------------
"this is the speed 2 22m2 "silferarrow"
it's a prototype and wenn they designed this beast they wanted to make the silverarrow one size bigger then the normal one 19m2 butt they tought is was to slow so its didnt went into production...
this is a 22M2 SPEED 2 SILVERARROW PROTOTYPE and there is only one.....
ask armin of the flysurfer team"
------------------
It's essentially a paraglider!

Kamikuza - 19-6-2009 at 06:51 PM

Oh, wish I could find the vids of the guys 'paragliding' on kites ... Chamonix I'm sure ...

JoJo1 - 19-6-2009 at 08:19 PM

It was the ozone speed kites or something like that they came out a few yrs ago and guys were doing cliff soaring with them, but I guess they were outlawed here in the US. I would imagine you could still find the vids on ozone website or maybe Eli still has them.

It's called ""Speed flying." I guess we'll have to settle for Ozone Mantas (even if ridden more hanging than "backwards")

I never get tired of posting this :smug:

elfasa - 20-6-2009 at 03:00 AM

that is a nice vid :)

Definitely outlawed at my local park

Kamikuza - 20-6-2009 at 05:50 AM

It was similar Lad but it was some nutter up a snowy mountain ... and he went bloody miles into the sky.
Speed gliding on the other hand, is something else again ...

Heres a vid of chasta and gege doing what your talking about. I had to study the vid a few times to understand how they were doing it.
If you check out around the 3 min mark Gege (on skis) clearly swaps the bar right before takeoff. Notice the red side of the bar(left side) is in his right hand.
Pretty impressive vid i thought.

Kamikuza - 20-6-2009 at 10:18 AM

That looks like it ... cool  can you imagine what the locals would say if I turned up on a mountain to try that here? :o
Would the control be reversed ie. pull left turn right like that? Can't get my brain around it at 3am ...

lad - 20-6-2009 at 11:39 AM

Yep - you are essentially flying like a paraglider 'chute - facing the same direction as the leading edge.

I suppose this can only work if you are launching off a hill/cliff/dune/wave (and against the wind) as your falling weight is what keeps the foil going forward?

Bladerunner - 20-6-2009 at 01:29 PM

This one is cool.

JoJo1 - 20-6-2009 at 01:46 PM

That's not the same thing I am talking about these look like small parachute like 10 meters if I recall ozone made them and you are harnessed in like a paraglider not a kite. Hopefully Eli will see this as I am sure he remembers and probably still has the vids of them in action, but they were using them several yrs. back for sloap soaring off of cliffs and dunes. Looked like loads of fun, but pretty damn dangerous at the same time.

ya that is a bummer for sure kamikuza Japan doesn't sound to kite friendly at least where you have been trying to kite. I know there are legal places to kite in Japan as we had a Japan local buggy dude that has been coming over for NABX for several years. I am not sure if he still does as I haven't made it to the desert in a few yrs. I saw you are from Indonesia are there good spots to buggy over ther? I have several friends that came over here stateside for college and have since moved back home that have been after me for years to come visit their homeland which I really want to as it looks like a great place to visit. If I could also get to kite there I am sure it would make hurry up to go visit.

Yes - the "Speed Flying" link I made above to Ozone's still-under-development "Bullet" kite.

Very small & really, really fast, but still supposedly glide-y and stable.

The flyers like zipping close to rocks, outcroppings, etc. ...looks like pancakes-made-to-order when they get in lesser hands.

love the music and he gets a total float out

Kamikuza - 20-6-2009 at 07:22 PM

No I'm from New Zealand originally ... been to Indonesia a few times though ;)

Lad is right - speedflying, not gliding. I saw on a Discovery show that the sky diving boys are doing the same thing - small chutes and buzzing the ground before stalling it to land

... how do you embed youtube vids?

stetson05 - 21-6-2009 at 09:10 AM

I think this is the speed flying video you guys are talking about.

You can use it kite boarding or as a paraglider :)
