Transportation

I'm still hoping to attend this year, but I'm not sure if the finances will be there. So I'm trying to get an overall cost estimate of travel expenses for one person.

Are there any good sources for cheap airfare? (from Ohio)

Also, I'm assuming I'd need a rental car also, yes? Or is there other transportation available?

Any other solo attendees looking to split any costs on room or car?

And, this being my first trip to a buggy event, I'm not looking to do any of the races, but I do want to be able to buggy, does that mean I need to register as a participant or a guest?

Thanks a bunch, Here's hoping I can join you!

hey chip.
first off i hope you can make it. yes. if you do plan to buggy you will need to reg. plus you need to be an AKA member to buggy. to answer your other questions. go to nabx.net and look for about nabx. go down to frequently asked questions. that should answer your other questions. if you don`t want to rent a car you can take a taxi from the airport. cost about 45$. the lake bed is off to the side of the hotels. there will enough of us to give you the 4 mile ride out from the hotel to there we set up camp. sorry but i got a room mate already. maybe somebody else will chime in if you plan to come.

I thought you only needed to be an AKA member if you were going to be racing?

Hahaha... very funny. Turns out we were both wrong. According to this thread further down, Blake says you don't need membership at all...

Well, I'm already an AKA member, so it fine either way. :)

Also, I'm still searching for Airfare, any suggestions? Everything I'm turning up so far is ludicrous. $500+

Are there any other close airport that might be cheaper?

Hard to get the best deals at this late of date. For instance, if you would have booked at least 21 days ahead you could have flown Southwest Airlines Fun Fare from Columbus for under $200 round trip.

Travelocity can still get you some deals for around $250 to $300 depending on when you want to fly...

Hello Chip,
First find your airfare, ...............then keep posting and keep aware of what is going on, depends on when, and most likely from Vegas, you should not have much problem coordinating the trip from Vegas to Ivanpah.
Dollar rental car is known to be the cheapest rental Co in Vegas, but there are always deals available thru web based "bucket" providers like travelocity, travelworm, priceline, expedia and so on, on both airfare, car rental and of course hotel room, package combination is often a very good deal.
It may not be too late, but as always.............. the early birds get the worm.
You see when I made reservations for Whiskey Pete's (I think I got one of the last few rooms available @ $15, and that was 4 days ago), I got unfortunately single bed/king size (lucky me), as I could have share the room ( 2 beds) with someone else. But I don't complain as it is already a dam good deal, thanks to LANDSUB. Maybe someone else is also looking to share.
I will be leaving Vegas during the day on Monday the 28th, if you do arrive sometime during the day, preferably during the morning/ begining of afternoon........then I will pick you up and give you a ride to the Playa. Once on the Playa, due to traffic, it is pretty easy to get a ride from / to it to the local resorts. As mentioned food is pretty cheap, from fast food to several buffets, just make sure to carry your own gallon(s) of water.
Hope this help.................. in fact I can pick-up 2 peoples on Monday the 28th on my way to the Playa.
Maybe someone else will post info as to coordinate car rental sharing with you / others.
C ya :singing:

Hey, I've got an air mattress and I'm not against sleeping on the floor if it means I can go or not! :)

Heck, I'd just camp if I thought I could get cloths, tent, sleeping bag, air mattress and of course buggy and kites into two 50lb bags!

I've found some flights that might be (barley) in my budget, if I can find a good enough deal on lodging and travel.

I'm looking at going the second half of the week. I can't get the whole time free from work, and flights out wednesday seem to be a lot cheaper.

Funny thing is, I've had these dates in my calendar for 6 mo. now, and new it was coming up, but the grind has had my nose planted too firmly in the stone to do anything about it till now! Oh, sometimes it sucks being the Hare.

I will be bringing a tent and camp stove sleeping bags etc, just in case the weather is good and I need to catch that midnight run or sumthing. Anyway, If I do end up staying in a hotel, I would be glad to share fares or whatever works out. Here's looking forward to sweet fast runs, and a grin that won't quit!!

It's official, my flight is booked! (for about twice of what it was this afternoon! Ugh!)

I'm only able the make the second half of the week. My flight gets in at 11am Thurs. and I leave 10:45 pm Mon. Hey, I'll be there for 65% of it at least! (Hell I'll be there at all!)

And I've registered, now all I need is to figure out I'll get from vegas, and where I will sleep.
Maybe I'll just curl up and sleep under a kite if I have to! :)

The NABX web site recommends a 4x4 truck or SUV, how big of a problem is it if I ended up renting a much cheaper sedan or economy? (though I doubt my 6'4" frame would fit in anything less than a sedan.)

Is anybody coming in Thursday or going to the airport Monday evening that could give me a lift back to Vegas?
bugymangp mentioned you can get a cab from the airport for about $45? Is that from the airport to Primm? I thought that was like a 45 min drive. $45 seems cheap.

I got into Power kites last year just before SBBB, and have been looking forward to going this year ever since.

Sorry, I'm rambling now, better stop while I'm not too far behind. :)

I'm arriving into Vegas on Wedneday 30th between 6pm to 8pm as standby and will return on Monday 4th midnight flight. I'm renting a minivan myself and anyone who wants to ride along to Ivanpah and back on those date/time, let me know then.

( I'm staying at Buffalo Bills with two beds at Travelworm discounted so one available bed is waiting for a roommate ):!:

Hello Chip,
You do not need a 4x4 or SUV to get onto the Playa, the only probleme is really past the gate, water damage is more likely to have occured.
That is where the water runs from higher ground into the lakebed. It is easily avoided by going around .......... a few feet, even maybe a couple of yard. Anyway, some of us will be there before then in order to check the dryness of the lake, and will probably report about the damage ........... if any, at the "virtual" gate.
C you there.

No idea why they say you need a 4x4 or SUV. I've seen plenty of economy cars out there, surely more than 4x4s. Ford Ranger and Chevy Colorado pickups are popular rentals too.

Check with BBs to see if they have a courtesy van to/from the airport. Just a thought.

I'd love to split a room.

My flight in is Thursday 10:15am, out it Monday 10:45pm.
If I can split a room, I might just rent a car and make life easier.

My profile has my contact info if you're interested.

No, for those of you who want to know, we have found a new victim for Freemanization this year. He's Blake's buddy Aarron from Colorado, and he will be getting the full treatment this year!
