Does anyone know what the correct socket size is for the axle nut on GI Boards?

Well, the subject line pretty much covers it.

The GI boards come with a small spanner wrench, but I would like to replace it with a ratcheting flex wrench of the correct size. I could just trial and error it, but if someone knows off the top of their head, all the better. The GI documentation lists the Allen wrench sizes, but not the socket size for the axle nut.

Sam

Don't know, I should check that too as I hate the adjustable wrench that was supplied. I much prefer sockets.

Fire off a u2u to USA_Eli_A . He should be able to give you the socket sizes for GI boards.

I can check the exact size when I get home if no one responds (but Heros starts tonight so I may not have time to post until tomorrow). I know its metric. I think its 11mm. Could always email or call Matt at GI.

GI says 7/16"

Will check to confirm tonight. If it turns out, I don't have that wrench readily available (although I really want a flex wrench... unless you are careful the spanner can score the sideplates on the bearings), I know what is going to happen. I am going to schlep the board into the local Lowes.

In all honestly, I can't seeing it making them any more nervous that crawling into the trunk of a car at a dealership to check trunk size. :tumble: :wink2:

Yet another instance, where a digital caliper would save some grief.

Sure thing.... the reason all this started is because the OCD in me wanted to have a small tool roll in the Sherpa bag. Of course, from these acorns grow...

Oh bother.... not 7/16" Waaaaay to small. I suspect this is a case of the question that was asked isn't the one that was heard. The axle diameter may be 7/16" The bolt and the shoulder on it is considerably larger.

Think Brian might be right about it being metric. The closest SAE size has too much play. The current Cinderella hopeful is 16mm.

Looks like me and the board are going to Lowes in the near future. Yes, the normal and the sane would remove the bolt and take just that, but I also want a wrench to hold the hanger nut, which theoretically is held trapped by the indent in the hangers. That's only a theory though and doesn't play out well in the real world. So might as well take the whole kit and kaboodle to figure out if I am getting standard length or stubbies for that one.

ATB,
Sam

I just switched cubes on my GI yesterday, I'm not sure you'll find anything that you can use on the hanger nut. It's too recessed.

Its definately metric as I break my board down 2-3 times a year for cleaning but I can't remember what nut is which. I believe between the bindings, cubes, wheels, etc. I use a 7, 9 (maybe 11mm but I think 9 as I always think of the gun when pulling the socket) and if it wasn't an 11mm for the wheel nut than its a 15mm socket. Might be 16mm but IIRC its 15mm. But hey, what's 1mm between friends ;-)

I used a 10mm for the nut on the bolt that attaches the cube/hanger to the truck yesterday.

Sam,

I just measured mine up. 5/8s rachet for the hub nuts. 10mm for the heart bolt (as mentioned above) and 10mm for the binding bracket mount. Hangers require a wrench as they are too tight to fit a rachet around, B
