Trip planning

So, we were all about booking a trip to Maui with an extended stay at kite beach but I've been told that kite beach isn't the best place for beginners like myself.

D'oh!

Is this true? If so, what warm destination would you recommend for a guy looking for lessons / gear travelling with his wife and 6-8 month old baby in Jan/Feb? Ultimately I'd like to make this the "come home as an independent kiteboarder" trip, able to stay upwind.

Help! I thought Kite Beach was a perfect place. Maybe it is? Back to Oahu perhaps? Maybe the Caribbean or Mexico? Maybe just the coastal US? Any advice?

Having grown up in Ohio, I can say with some authority :lol::lol:

Not that I wouldn't move back.

I spent the first 25 years of my life in Ohio. I love Ohio. But I reserve any and all rights to make fun of it.

You might do better asking the same question on the kiteforum, in their kitesurfing area. There is a lot of talk about locations in Brazil, and that time of year is definitely their warm season. I am not sure about wind though. I've heard some good things about Mexico, but also that they get lots of "light wind". Hawaii might be good, but I have no idea how good their locations are for beginners. Basically, I have no useful information, but felt the need to post anyways.. Sorry for wasting your time. :(

:shocked2: Are we living in and talking about the same Ohio?!? Lol, I guess up by Edgewater Park and Maumee Bay it's not so bad... Everywhere else is kinda pathetic.

If you're looking for a good place to fly, try Galleon Bay at St. Martin. I went out there in July with my parents for a family vacation. That bay is dedicated to kitesurfing. The water is knee deep for hundreds of feet out and the water is nice and calm, while the wind is consistent and awesome. Will post pics when I get back home.

I didn't say that I loved it for kiting. Just that I loved it. I used to live in the Akron/Canton area.

I'm in Hinckley atm and Don (kitejumper) is up in Oregon, a stone's throw away from Maumee Bay. (I know my profile location says Cleveland, but that's because I try to get up there to fly as much as possible) The only thing Hinckley is known for are those crazy buzzards and all of the golf courses. It's an ok place if you're into golfing and hiking, but for kiting, forget about it.

Perth AUSTRALIA :cool2:
Sounds crazy but ........ It is pretty cheap to stay and eat if you do it right. You can almost make up for the airfare and even it's not too bad these days.

Cape Hatteras sounds like a top notch place. Although I've never been there. Even a cable park so you never truly get skunked !:Ange09:

It's on the east side of the island on the French side. Just above the border between the French and Dutch side. It's the bay just below Orient Bay, if that clarifies things at all. My family stayed at Dawn beach, which was just south of Galion Bay, and this was before I had any of my Slingshots. It was the first time I was able to fly in true costal winds, and I did get to do some body dragging with the Blaze II, but I didn't go too far out in case I lost control of the kite. It would have been awesome if I would have had my Fuels at that point. I did see a few other kitesurfers there, the was one guy riding a 16m Cabrinha Switchblade and I recall seeing an Eclipse Nano. I was excited because it was the first time I got to see kitesurfers in the wild. Lol.
