Portable internet devices in the US?

Hey, do any of our American counterparts here know who offers the best portable internet solution for the western US? I used a portable modem on our trip to eastern Canada and it was great (although the coverage was spotty it still did the trick).

I'm thinking of setting something up for our trip to NABX and back so I can stay connected to work while we're on the road. I know coffee shops and hotel lobbies offer one solution but I'm looking for something a little more at hand and guaranteed.

yeah, check out the cell phone companies. I personally have noticed that verizon has the best coverage.

I used the sprint card on my laptop for a couple years for work, they paid but it was expensive like 90 bucks a month.

I would say that verizon has the best coverage. I would be supprised if at&t or sprint had any coverage on the dry lake beds. Last time I was in death valley was for the army though in 2003 but then only verizon and us cellular had coverage, but us celluar doesn't have good internet.

Man this forum is amazing.

Verizon looks like the ticket and I can get a no contract one month USB internet stick for $159. PERFECT! Solid coverage all over western US.

I'll call them Monday to find out the implications of me not being a US citizen - don't know if that'll be an issue or not. Thanks guys!

should be a non-issue, as long as you're using it in the US there shouldn't be any issues. I doubt it will work too far into Canada though.

I've got a portable modem for Canada that works quite well, just stops dead as soon as I cross the border...although it could jump to AT&T. I should check with them and see if I can swing it from one network to the other. It's certainly stronger than the USB modems (although Verizon's coverage looks pretty smokin' sown there).

159 huh? Just say no! I work for Verizon and that's a little steep. 49 after rebate is the going cast. Coverage in the west is awesome! Just be careful of your data usage and keep in mind that the 60/month allows 5 GB of data transfer. It should be enough for usual browsing and email but if you are a heavy downloader, there are other options. If you have any questions regarding verizon wireless feel free to email me at sanderson@usawirelesscity.com

if you just need internet at NABX, the hotel has Cheetah however service sucked in the hotel room so De Dutch had to sit at McDonald's for a bit to upload pics.

i had T-Mobile before in the past when working in the USA.

whats the other company that has the "more bars slogan"?

Generally, yes however if you get a salesperson that is actually hungry for a data sale, you can get them for less :)

Yea, one of those MiFi things are the best bet. And Verizon has the best coverage. Sprint blows, don't even look at their expensive, wasteful plans.

I have a Verizon AirCard for work, and its coverage is amazing. Single strength isnt great sometimes, but I have yet to find a location where I couldnt pull out my laptop and actually do work. Best of luck.

I'd check if wimax has coverage there (Clear) since vegas/nevada is a coverage area. I't mobile broadband so you'll get considerably more bandwitdh over this than 3g or other. Other than that it depends who else gets service out there :) At&t has great coverage... in the NW!

http://www.clear.com/public/images/maps/maps_las_vegas.jpg

Looks like the lake is outside of coverage, but since it's pretty flat and coverage is line of site it may well have service. That's what it's like out by me in portland. Coverage goes WELL beyond their coverage map.
