Alasca Demo

Tonya and I are thinking of sending a 10m AlaSca out to eastern Canada, east of the Rockies, for demonstration flights. As this is a 10m kite we will want to ensure that the kite is going only to experienced flyers. Any experienced pilots interested in trying out what I think should an excellent snow kite?

I'd be interested to demo it if it goes up to here in Quebec, official province of snowkite

Yeah, and if it makes it to VT it might as well venture over to NH.

Perhaps it could attend Kitestorm in Burlington, VT in February?

I am very impressed with this kite.

Unique material . Light but strong. Flies very early for a 10m. Great material on the inlets to keep snow and sand out. Decent range. Nice float. I am most interested in how it compares to an outlaw / Pulse II .

I'll be real interested in what others think of it out east :wee:

To those interested in trying the AlaSCa: Tonya and I are waiting for a day to pull the kites out so we can check the colours, (Sky Country has no set colour schemes for their kites), and see which one we want to send out. Once we know the colours I will post to see which you folks would like to fly most.

I am very interested in trying this kite. I don't have much experience yet so once I get 20 to 30 hours on my 2010 6meter access I will give you a shout. When you messaged me 3-4 weeks ago I couldn't believe the price of what one of these bad boys are going for. So yeah when I do get enough exp. to demo one I will get a hold of you.

The website says that this kite comes on an Ozone control bar. I assume it would fly well with an Access XC bar then? I think its 54 inches. Does this mean that it has the primary safety/re-ride functionality as well?

How many pulleys do they use in the bridle, 2 or 4?

Blame Solaris for not keeping the web page up to date. Sky Country is now using a Slingshot bar. I have no idea what model Slingshot bar. It certainly seems a lot more solid than the Ozone bar that came with my Alasca. The Alasca bridle has two pulleys. It should fly quite well with Access XC bar, but you might have to make adjustment to leaders.

How about a hop of the Rockies for a demo. Not near eastern Canada, but if it ever stops monsooning in Vancouver we'll get some ice & snow here

Canuck, anything east of the Rockies is eastern Canada. ;) Speaking of monsoons in Vancouver, our field has become a lake. Whistler has opened the ski season with 5m of snow so far giving it a base of 2m measured at mid mountain. The three ski hills on the North Shore are all open a month early.
Back to the Alasca demo, we have three colour schemes in stock all have a white belly with black and white details. Base colours are blue, red, or orange. Which one would you folks like to try?

Mood: wanting a Charger

[*] posted on 23-11-2009 at 02:45 PM

so, the alaska has a "tightly woven, highly porous screen" that keeps snow out. sounds great!

i am a newbee, so never was out in snow yet. so a probably stupid question:

i am starting to wonder how kites like ozone frenzy or manta with NO grid on the leading edge deal with snow getting inside the kite?
do they just accumulate snow till they drop? cant imagine the dirt outs to work with snow..

another question: how do the kites from sky-country compare with flysurfers or ozone2010 regarding depower ?

If your open cell kite gets full of snow, just land it on it's leading edge and pull the brake lines a couple of times. The snow will dump right out. Relaunch and away you go.

Snow has never been an issue in my kites, unless its really light and the kite gets dragged on its leading edge trying to reverse launch in light wind.

Could we see pictures of the colors? They all sound good. I love that red/lime/grey that they have on their site.

I might be able to get some pictures in a week. We are having a bit of rain at the moment and our field is a either mud pit or a lake depending on where you look. Dirtslide was thinking of bringing out his RC boat on Sunday but figured his wheelchair would get stuck in the mud. Whistler mountain has had over 5m meters of snow this year. The local hills just outside of town have 1.5m of base. Our weather is really sucking even for a Raincouver autumn. The skiing would be great if there was any visibility.

The only kite that has ever caused me trouble gathering snow was my Fexifoils. It has a wide screen that grabs + balls the snow and it ends up in the kite.It became less of a problem after I quite crashing the kites so much.
