Wow. ThinkGeek - Not really kite related but.....
So, Thursday night....near or past midnight - I was doing a little online gift shopping at ThinkGeek.com. Placed my order with DHL International
shipping hoping for the best (cuz YOU KNOW I wouldn't have opted for UPS). The package arrived TODAY. The brokerage fee on about $200 worth of odds
and ends? Seven bucks (UPS would been $50 plus I'm sure).
I don't know what I'm more impressed (stunned) with....the fact that it got here in just one business day or that it only cost me $10 at the border.

interesting. DHL heh?
i recently had some photo gear shipped (USPS/still waiting) and since researched various shipping rates/fees. it seems that UPS may not be as bad as
most think. t'was explained to me like this...
if one simply selects UPS's least expensive option then one pays extra fees (such as brokerage and such) and waits longer on top of it all. if one
selects one of UPS's more inclu$ive services then brokerage is included and package arrives sooner.
i don't know how much of that is true/accurate.

And funny enough Paul, the wife apparently placed an order on Monday night cuz UPS arrived today and only asked for $3 at the door......
(But I'm still gonna keep trying to train the dog not to bark at any courier other than UPS ; )

funny/odd but most folks at all other forums (photo/camera/music) i visit have the same opinion of UPS as those here.
what i don't get is why UPS does not advertise to us garden variety consumers whom are not very well educated with respect to shipping savvy. i guess
their business/commercial accounts are keeping them happy/busy/fed? I mean USP has got to be the most "well known name" for shippers in north america.
there has to be enough of us small timers to make it worthwhile to run a few ads specifically geared towards dispelling myths to us guys.

No, the real story on UPS is much deeper than that. I was one of thousands in on a class action law suit against UPS. I ordered a part from the states
with a value of $12.00 and was charged $55.00 duty. UPS lost the law suit and we all received pay outs. They had to change their practice in Canada,
they are not allowed to just bill you for duty they must ask you if you want them to be your broker.
Personally I think The Big Brown sums it up very nicely.
