Synergy or Apex?

I've recently been in contact with a member selling a 10 meter Synergy, and a 10 meter Apex 2. As I'm pretty new to kiting I was wondering what people thought. I happen to live on a lake, which pulls me towards the Synergy for summer use as well. Though weighing about 170 I'm not sure if I'll get enough "lift" for the lake. I greatly appreciate any information/advice on the issue as soon as possible as I hate to keep the seller waiting! Thank you!

Not having flown either, others may have different opinions, but the 10m synergy will need a LOT of wind to get you moving and actually be having fun on it on land and on the water you'll need even more. Like 30knots. Although the same size, the apex has a much flatter profile than the synergy's C like shape and so the projected area is much greater. Basically it produces more power, and because it is specifically designed for land its going to be easier than a lot of other kites that are designed as crossover kites for land and water.

what are the winds where you are? summer / winter?

The Apex won't have as much depower, but will give you much better low end.

also what's your previous kiting experience, exactly? and do you know any local kiters who can help you out?

Just to throw my 2 cents in here. IMO the Syn will hold its value longer then the apex. The apex is a good kite, however not recommended for water use due to open cell. Have seen some people use an open cell on the water, but these guys really know what they are doing. The syn will produce more lift from my limited experience. furbowski hit it on the head that the Apex will have a better lower end.

The syn will eat the gusts better then the apex.

The bottom line is either way you can't go wrong with either one.

I'm 170. The Syn 10 is my moderate to high wind kite. Used mainly on water and snow. It can be used in 17 knots but not much fun for me until 20. In the snow it can be used in 15-ish but not much fun for me until 17-ish. Groundboard will be simlr to snow. I have yet to find the top end. I think it's someplace over 30 knots (35-ish??). I often have such a blast on the Syn 15 until 25 knots or so I will not bother putting the 10 up unless it's over 20 when I get to the beach.

true enough.... but don't want the man to rush into a purchase... those two are both depower foils, but that's where the similarities stop!

I reckon kitelust won't let him wait long anyways....

best of luck with your sales... that 16 will move, no worries! I've come close to pulling the trigger on that one myself!

get both because they will cover a huge wind range between the two, but neither one could replace the other. Yes they are both de-power and 10m, but you need to look at it more like the apex is 10m and the synergy is a 6m - 7m compared to the apex. That is basically what has been said above but in a different way. Just want to try and make it as clear as possible. So again my 2 cents get both

Thanks Dino :D. That was basically what I told someone somewhere else. Together, you've got a pretty good quiver.

Kitelust. I'm pretty sure I've felt that before, and it tends to be expensive. Stuff just seems to show up at my door.

I'm with Dino and Furb. Get em both, you are gonna need 2 or more kites anyway.

I say Apex. Unless you are already a good kite surfer you're not going to be using the 10m on a lake for a very long time. I doubt you'd pull that kite out on water until at least 25 knots and maybe higher and you wouldn't be out in those winds until you were already proficient (and would have a better idea of what you wanted out of a water kite).

If you're relatively new and/or looking for a first depower the Apex is going to be much easier to deal with. If you have kite buddies on arc's then I guess they could get you going, but in that case I think you'd want at least 12 or 15m before you wanted a 10m. At your weight the 10m Apex would be a great snow/land kite.

Alright, so the general consensus seems to be leaning towards the Apex. Are the crossover kites even worth it? I'd like to get a kite that I'm not going to have to turn around and sell right to upgrade.
