Auto zenith ?????

So...... I tried hooking the 10m Charger to an ice hook for a break.

The wind was very light maybe 8mph ? The kite just didn't want to settle in. In a short time it took to violently crashing then tore out the ice screw.

WTF !!!!!!!
:ticking:

You barely had enough wind to auto zenith any arc much less a 10m. A 19 will hover in those winds and a 15 will with a random poke and nod at the bar, but that little 10m doesn't have enough pressure on it in those winds to steady it. I'm sure that you don't need so much kite power on a frozen lake, so its unusual that the 10 would be your choice in those winds for most other kite activities.

I'm sure it will auto zenith with more wind but was amazed at how it managed to get so out of control as to crash hard like that.

I hope the Chargers are OK. I was showing off to RevPaul the first time I had the Guerilla out with him, tied it to some soccer pitch bleachers, walked away and wouldn't you know, the darn thing looked down and said, "Me crash. All over those steel bleachers."

They have since seen real live evidence of the auto zenith so the kite (and myself) have been redeemed ; )

Mood: wanting a Charger

[*] posted on 8-2-2010 at 10:04 AM

might it be, that the charger has less autozenit than older arcs? might be due to the stiffer canopy and higher internal pressure?

even my little 7 sqm scorpion does autozenit (for its size) marginal winds around 6-10 knots, see my vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7EBwSDB5mg

seems to be a tradeoff ! better performance, less autozenit, less gust munching..

I was sort of avoiding mentioning that vid because I had forgotten the details. The fact I had seen it made me think it should work with my 10 in super low wind.

What was different is that my bar did not sit at the stopper even though the stopper was not all the way up. The bar would move up and down as the kite moved in and out of control. Did you move your stopper way down ? I had it trimmed to about 80% depower. How did you trim ?

I had a 15 and 12 Charger anchored on the weekend, they wavered a little but it was lighter wind and had some turbulence coming over the tree tops at about 18-20kmh (12mph).
The was coming in a bit of a bowl so the kite was tempted to fly high and then slightly past 90 degrees so I set the stopper down a bit just to keep them from overflying.
Haven't had a chance to break out the smaller sizes yet - waiting on more wind but now you have me curious so I'll see if I can get out and try this week sometime.

@bladerunner: i have no stopper ball on my naish bar. and my naish bar is long throw, so there is no need for any trim. thats the thing: the bar could move up and down (and it did a bit) during the kite auto-zeniting. and still it didnt overfly and always found its way back to the zenit, even in those low winds.
what about your internal straps? for better autozenit, you should have them completely loose afaik.

I had my straps all in about 1 inch . Attached to middle knott. VP3 on factory setting?

Sorry. It looked like that was an adjustable stopper ( the bumper ) on your bar.

It seems it was the speed the kite would gain as it corrected itself ? It would power + speed up fast ! Yours seemed to correct much smoother ?

Markite , I would love it if you got a chance to try with your 10.

KC triple eight wasn't willing to try it with Rip's demo after seeing mine hit hard. :frog:

I've had my 10m Charger auto zenith no prob in about 10mph steady winds. Same with 12-15. I haven't had the 19m out enough to say for sure but I suspect it's got to be as stable as the others.

No trim, internals all at loose settings, Stopper all the way out.

My expirience is that the auto zenith on the Charger is as good as the Venom series and much better than the Syns.

We don't get much steady wind here but even with the punchy winds I can at least leave the kite overhead and buckle my boots, switch skis, crash etc. and the kite is 9 /10 times right where it should be.

I always had to keep an eye on the Syns. At least more than previous models.

Herc there's a pic of the inflator on my blog.
