MEDIA RELEASE
KITEPOWER TO ADVISE RIO 2016 ORGANISING COMMITTEE
An Australian kite retailer has been named principal advisor for the new sport of Kiteboarding for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero.
Steve McCormack, founder of Kitepower stores, will lead the advisory team, comprising a hand-picked selection of international experts. This is the
first time Kiteboarding will be represented in the Summer Olympic Games.
Speaking from Sydney, McCormack said, “I am thrilled to be involved in the evolution of this dynamic sport. Kiteboarding’s inclusion on the world
stage is long overdue and this will put it on par with snowboarding and tae kwon do.”
McCormack says he was not surprised to be chosen as principal advisor. “I was not surprised to be chosen as principal advisor. As the founder of the
leading kite retailer in this country, what I have done for the sport is unparalleled. Not that it’s a case of ‘who’s the best’, but the fact of the
matter is that at the end of the day, Kitepower is. We are. We all are.”
The search is now on, adds McCormack, for suitable candidates for his home-base advisory panel. Kitepower stores in Sydney, Geelong and Brisbane are
looking for nine kiteboarding enthusiasts who can volunteer their time to discuss the unique challenges facing competitive kiteboarding. Volunteers
will be rewarded with an all-expenses-paid trip to Brazil including accommodation, food and drink, and a kite and board allowance.
Those who are interested should contact steve@kitepower.com.au.
“I don’t pretend to know it all,” says McCormack, “but I’m well aware that many of my customers do, so I’m inviting them to help me help the Rio 2016
Olympic Organizing Committee put on the best show the Olympics has seen since Greco-Roman wrestlers put clothes on.”
