NABX Shade Netting?

So we saw a few of y'all relaxing under some shade netting something or other out on the Playa and I was wondering what the story was behind it. Was it standard army camo netting type stuff? I saw one "camp" set up kinda self standing (it blew over but it was self standing at one point). It was just past the tent maybe by 100-200 yards or so. Trying to track it down if it's not too spendy.

Stick that on an EZ-up frame and presto- Let the wind blow through and a little less apt to spiderwalk like a regular EZ-up likes to.

Just remember that an ez up frame is only good for 1 use.... Every Monday morning the beach here is littered w/ broken-bent ez up frames.... The best shade system Ive seen is an army surplus parachute staked in the sand... It just sits there all puffed up, but the wind never stops blowing here.....

I have a pic somewhere, i'll post it when I find it.....

Its just Standard cammo netting you can get a mil surplus stores pretty cheap. Blocks the sun and let's the wind pass thru. If you just used a solid sheet, when the wind picks up it'll just rip off.

Any idea what is a good size/price for the camo netting?

Right now I am just using some tri-shelters picked up at STP on deep discount and with a coupon.

For cooler weather:

For warmer weather:

The nice thing about them so far has been

  • how small they pack done.
  • how painless they are to set up and take down.
  • Price
  • Stability when staked down with a few HQ stakes (I did get a chance to "fly" one at Millenium when I first got them.
  • Thief has one of the blue ones and when set up adjacent to each other, they provide a lot of coverage.

I know some folks still like EZ-UPs but the steel frame is heavy and setup can sometimes be entertaining.

The camo netting intrigues me.

Sam

I'm seeing anywhere from $40 to $200 depending on size and where I look (eBay, Colemans etc). So far the most faith goes to the Colemans but I have to check some of our local surplus supply places because I suspect we might have some around town. It's the wind that these things have my interest for. Seemed brilliant at NABX - nice shade but it won't blow away on you (as readily as a tarp would). I think it was the desert color ones out on the playa - the olive drabs and "woodland" ones I'm seeing really look too "army" for a holiday trailer awning IMO - the desert ones somehow looked just like a funky shade shelter.

I was going to pick one up for nabx after barry mentioned this to me, but I had nothing to stake it to so I figured I would just borrow shade. Next year we need to run a big net over the "chill" area. But anyways, when I went to the mil surplus store, I saw some in decent shape for 10$. Not sure of their exact size, it was just a big pile of netting. I can take a trompse back there to investigate.

Used this stuff for years in the millitary. The poles we used are like the ones WIllard posted. I tried to open a surplus store but it never took off. I still have some connections though.

Sure, but it won't be til sometime mid-week. The store I went to was in Aloh. I'm currently getting rained on at the coast. Although there is a surplus store in seaside. Never been in there; it looks part surplus part baby resale, so that sounds like a hooj ball of fun.

ohhh, good call. we need a geodesic dome.... mmmm

A little late to this... I have a section of netting that could be cut and made into 2 pieces. It's just like the camo netting that was pictured at NABX and is in OK shape (not perfect). I could cut it in half and would send one section to Macboy for starting this thread and whoever wants the other.

Price? Cost of shipping ;-)
