Go Pro
Hi we are looking at cameras, and the go pro is a contender.
I know alot of you have the Go Pro. But what is the pixels for photos?
And how durable do they seem to be?

5MP. I haven't abused mine yet, but Wired claims they're pretty durable: See review here.

If you are looking for a point-and-shoot camera, then I wouldn't get a go pro HD or go pro wide. Simply because the lense distorts the image for the
wide angle. The SD go pro has a good sensor for video but I've found it pretty noisy for stills. And the low light performance of all the go pros is
jsut smiply horrid (and there's no flash). But then again it was meant for high speed video
Sorry, I know that's not what you wanted to hear
The below are from the gopro hd.

We are looking for video really. And with the prices of sony and philips in the $300-$400 range, and the gopro has the water proof case and mounting
gear at under $300 it's looking like a better choice.

I paid too much for a Sony DCR SR85. Has 60GB storage which is nice but the stills look like crap.
The video camera reviews I searched through all said this would be the case. Crapy stills from video cameras.
Had the GoPro been around then or had I knew, I would have got it instead as I bought an underwater housing also. The housing is nice to have but with
temperature changes it fogs and pressure builds inside the housing. It also records the hum sound underwater and in a housing, they arn't small
anymore.
So I would say GoPro. I don't know much about them but trying to put a HandyCam in rough environments just isn't worth it, taking too much time to
protect the camera and Roc is probably an extreme kind of guy.

also realize that the gopro does not have an external screen, so you can't see what you're filming. If you want a small HD video cam, I really like
my flip HD. It's small and HD but not fisheye so the picture is not distorted. And it's cheaper than a go pro... I've tried to use my gopro as a
minicam and I think the distortion really just messes with home movies; and not having the view screen is annoying.

I saw on there website that they do have an add on veiw screen. But how much battery life it uses is not mentioned. But it may have it's own batteries
as well. I'll need to look into it more.
Sandy was just reading some good reviews about the GoPro in Hiker magizine. And I've seen a lot of talk on here about it in the past.

Great little camera, multi-use in various conditions - all good.
Didn't know the screen had been released yet ... if you're using the wide angle unit it's mostly unnecessary - close enough is good enough!
The thing I'm buying the wife for her birthday - Sanyo Xacti - also does HD and comes in wide and regular lenses (here anyway) and has a screen ...
not waterproof though but the 10Mpx version is US$200 or so here - cheaper than the GoPro and takes better photos - probably
I love the GoPro for it's ease of use eg. mounting, ruggedness and good quality movies. Stills are noisy on the SD (dunno about the HD yet haven't
checked) and the distortion could probably be sorted with some panorama software like AutoPano or perhaps PS - correction of lens distortion ... dunno
...
Yeah... I got a kite. Or two...

If you need both cam and HD vid without a housing, I suggest the canon t1i or the new t2i
by far the best dslr camera you can get on a budget. Check out frys or bestbuy. I'd you need to keep it from dust a raincoat is only 10 bucks.
Sure extra lenses will be around 300 for a zoom but it makes some sweet pics at 15 pix.

I have to agree on the distortion with the wide. Also the sound is really fuffled and it's hard to hear what people are saying even when it's on high.
Still a good deal for the price and a tough little camera.
We take a good tumble here racing the minis when my team mate takes us out at the 5:45 mark.....

We live pretty cheap ... no kids, don't drink (much) or smoke and cost of living is reasonably cheap here.
Gas for the car is probably my biggest expense :shocked2:
Back on topic ... the SD has ok sound but the HD has good sound - and a back cover with holes in it for even more. Better than the SD for sure and I
seem to remember then were working on plug-ins for additional external mics ...!
Yeah... I got a kite. Or two...

That looks like fun Jaymz ... what are you riding?
Another thing that bugged me with the GP-SD was that it did 170' but then mushed it into 512x384 or whatever the standard def TV was supposed to be
... thankfully, the HD keeps the wide angle but also keeps the format - looks much more natural to me :D

It not too hard when your already so close to the ground on the NSR. I can't believe people would ride them on the streets. Crazy.
Sorry for the hijack. Back to the GoPro

I have to second the comment on the Cannon T1i. Recently picked that up for my wife. I am not using it while riding in the buggy, my wife uses it
while watching me kitesurf. This weekend will be our first weekend on the beach with it. I am curious to see how it works.
Here is a short little vid she shot of me kitesurfing with it last week:

I've been using a GoPro HD since x-mas. It does good for the price. Comes with two cases-one is Wpfg.
the battery lasts about 2 hours in the summer/8 gig card will get about 90 min. of HD video. I think the bubble/warp footage got worked out, as I
don't notice it.
