so.... if you are in a tornado watch with a time stamp of 9am-10pm you know its gonna be a rough day!
around 5 o'clock the tornado chasers came out of the woodwork.... Doppler trucks, vans with all sorts of craziness hanging off of them, pilot cars...
you name it, they were everywhere.... well... weather be damned i wanted hot wings and beer.... and as i've always said..... i think bad weather is
interesting, and nothing interesting ever happens to me... so to the bar we go
Ok, the bar we went to is like 100 years old, solid brick, huge basement... a sturdy place to weather a storm if need be. So i wasnt too worried. We
are at the bar maybe 20mins, and all the TVs flash the red screen of impending weather doom.... so what does the WHOLE place do? Go outside!
(Its a nebraska thing... bad weather, go outside and look for it)
Very interesting things were going on above me right then... i looked south down the main street, clouds were movin north. Looked west, clouds were
moving east. Looked east, clouds were moving west... and of course clouds were comming in from the north too... and right above that bar in
scottsbluff was a spinning mess of clouds.... no crap, it looked like a toilet swirl of green and gray clouds... a little too low for comfort.
Well about then the rain started to come down, and the wind came up (maybe 60 or so mph), and of course it wouldnt be a Nebraska storm without golf
ball sized hail... all the power went out, street lights and all... the tornado sirens kicked on around town... not that i could really hear 'em...
but it was nice to know that it actually was a tornado... Once this all REALLY got rolling, there was so much wind/rain/debris/hail... i couldnt see
across a 2-lane street to the other building
we all went back inside... a little more freaked out than before... but luckily my hotwings were done
so i enjoyed a beer and some really good hotwings in the dark... the nastiness outside kept up for about 15 or 20 more minutes... the whole time i was
waiting for the windows to blow... but luckily they never did!
eventually the power kicked back on, all the warnings expired, and i had dinner.... and it was good... my truck was parked in a shed at work, so i got
no damage... my fiances car was parked under a tree with no leaves on it when we got back to it... it had a few dents... but not bad
Sure don't like those bad boys. Only had one come over the house here. It ripped apart a housing development quarter mile behind us and there were
baseball cards, siding and roofing all in the yard. The woods behind me were littered with debris.
It jumped this area then ripped up another quarter mile in front of us.
A sturdy building that has wings and beer, guess there was no better place to be.

Texas.... state of baseball size hail. Frequent car sales due to hailstorm damage.
While there was never a lot of snow. It is very strange when you are at work and announcement comes over the loudspeaker at work that ice has formed
underneath the cars in the parking lot (which had a slight incline to it)..... AND THEY ARE ON THE MOVE :o :o :o
Having your car slide side ways at an intersection (also with a slight incline) after you had come to a full stop was also interesting. Waiting at
the stoplight with the wheels slowing turning just to keep you from sliding into oncoming traffic.
:wee:
"Body surfing" your car on the skid plate of your car because of snow that had built up before they had a chance to clear the off-ramps due to a
shortage of snow clearing equipment in town.
:wee: :wee: :wee:
Not sure if it qualifies as "good times" but definitely surreal at times.
