Moding of the Hardcore!

Just picked up a set of steel atv rims from a buddy today.

I heard coolbreeze talking about this at the last Grayland WA. event, and decided to try for my self.

Price was right on the rims. FREE!

Found a set of 2wd front hubs on sleaze-bay "cough" I mean E-bay fairly cheap.

Funny thing is now I have a set of 8x12 rims and 11x10

Both sets have 25 inch atv trail tires mounted. Should be interesting to see how the 25 inch tires affect the buggy geometry.

Now the quest begins to find a 10 inch rim with a 4+4 offset for the front end. The above mentioned sets have a 5+3, and 7+4 offset.

Grant any ideas?

Pics to follow. soon I hope.

I've been thinking of making that mod on the back too... probably won't get to it until after nabx.

I like to run hubs even though they add some weight. It opens up a lot of tire/wheel combinations.

That's what Grant was saying at Grayland. Now I am just gonna play with the set I picked up, and look at other possibilities.

Hi Sean

I have been really happy with my set up. I have been running the blades on the rear for a while now and I'm not sure that I could go back to a regular tire the extra traction is great but I can still slide out when I need or want to. I haven't had the chance to try them out on a beach yet though, I ran out of summer. I have ordered a set of Duro Top Fighter 21x10x10 from Moron brothers Racing but they have been back ordered. I was hoping to use them at NABX. I know everyone likes to use barrow wheels for the potential added speed on the hard surface but I would rather have the added stability and traction. I was really happy with my Beach racers this year at NABX. I dont think I'll ever come close to breaking any speed records, but thats not why I'm there.

The front wheel is a different animal. I have bought an aluminum wheel, it's a 10 inch whide rim with a 5/5 offset., but I think it's too wide so I'm going to split it down the middle, cut out enough to make it an 8 inch and reweld it. I know it's a bit of work and there are probably easier solutions but I have the equipment and it's the off season so I have the time. I am going to try to use ATV hubs with a 4 on 110 bolt patern and machine it to fit the 6004RS bearings. They have a 20mm ID but have the smaller OD.

Post some pics of your progress I cant wait too see what you have done. What do your wheels look like? I was going to buy another set of rims for the new tires because the one thing I found, It's really difficult to change the tires every time.

Good Luck
Later

Coolbreeze

The rims I got were rescued rims. They had been living in an outdoor garage for some time now. gonna have to clean them up. I also have to double check the bearings that came with the hubs to make sure that my 20mm ID bearings fit or do some machining. Grant where di you pick up the 10X10 rim? Haven't been able to find anything. I would love to find a 10X8 with a 4X156 pattern.

The tires currently on the rims are worn mudders. Should give me plenty of grip on the sand while I mess around with the two different rim sets.

Will keep you up to date. The project starts this Friday.

Thats OK Sean someday you'll be way old too. Just because the body slowed doesn't mean the mind isn't fast. Now what month, day and time is it? Retirement is way to much fun, but keeping the body rebuilt is a chore I could do without.

Here's a shot of the Tires / Wheels on my buggy. They are the aluminum 8" x 8" wheels on the rear and 8" x 4" on the front. Speedracer tread all the way around.
