"Just one more ..."

I noticed in another thread , that there were a few peeps that had been bit by the now infamous "Just one more ..." .

I too have made the mistake of actually saying outloud "Just one more ..." Now I wish I was flyin' .

I got to thinkin about it "Just one more ..." . Why just one more and not three more. Is it that you're out of time? the wind gettin sketchy? too many people around? etc. What I mean is ,there must be a reason we say "Just one more ..." .
Maybe when we find ourselves thinking/saying
"Just one more ..." we need to think about why we are only going to do "Just one more ..."

So how many of us have regretted saying "Just one more ..."?

And why?

Personally... I havent been in a situation where saying that has gotten me into trouble... yet (knocking on wood). I am normally saying just one more when I am running out of time doing whatever it is that I'm doing.

I have to caveat that to say that I did have an instance where I was downhill snowboarding, and saying just one more put me in the hospital with a seperated shoulder... That was a bad day, and my lesson learned was to take an easy run as my last one.. and not try for anything silly when I'm getting tired...

Just one more for me is when I'm past the time I should be packing up to keep in good graces with the wife. I usually say 1 more a few too many times. pack up time is usually when the wind blows the best.

I too have used that saying several times while skiing! Sometimes it pans out, sometimes it leads to being a mistake! "should have stopped before "that" happened. I usually am saying it because I have others waiting on me and I am not done playing! It's like you know it is time to take a break or stop for the day, but you can't help yourself but to do it "one more time" before you head out! I have had days in the buggy where I used that and ended up walking back with the buggy in tow because I just plain ran out of wind!

This is a great question, one sure to never really be answered as for Why we do it!

Humans connect to the conditions and events in their environment. If one is having an enjoyable experience most would choose to extend the terms of said experience. Ending the experience would generally be considered to carry a negative connotation as it would mean no longer doing what was previously enjoyable only moments prior. The experience of "loss". Since most people are heavily enamoured with the biological condition of addiction we will return to our favored event experiences repeatedly even when we know they end in pain due to the lack of our sound judgement.

Ummmmm,,,,,,,,, did you really want the answer to your question or was it just retorical:rolleyes:

Personally I haven't done a "just one more" in years..........but as I recall I was always sore after every one:smilegrin:

WG I feel like you"re asking a guy to dig deep on this one.
Three scenarios come to mind when I feel the "just one more" decision floating about.
One is when I've had a great time ,the kids are tired, we're hungry. its getting late ,you know the feeling . At some point I have to decide its time to go and I mentally start to wined down to "just one more then we're out of here" and I walk away with a tired satisfaction.

The second scenario has no wined down time. I'm at the peak of the thrill , I'm at the edge of my abilities and feel I can do better , the blast of wind that will take me faster could be out there right now. I know I need to go but I'm going to squeeze one more run in. At the end of the day there is no tired worn satisfaction , there is the feeling of leaving behind unfinished business.

The last I find a little difficult to describe. "One more time" may be floating around but I don't really feel it upon me. I'll be doing something knowing that at some point Ill stop but I'm open to let some thing or some one else make that decision. I've run out of daylight and stopped, been injured and stopped ,being told to leave usually stops me.

I had been jumping a dirt bike over the the top of a little ridge like hill and was making one last run before calling it quits. I miss calculated where I was on the hill and launched myself over a gravel pit cut into one end of it. Evil Kinevil style all the way to the bottom wrapped my neck around the center of the handle bars , kept it up , rode it home thinking "I guess I'll live". Three days in icu then surgery for a tracheostomy and they installed a mold made from the throat of a cadaver. Yea I regret that one.

Myself and some friends spent a day jumping into the Grassee river near Canton NY after some heavy rains. A really narrow spot would send us ripping down stream into a calm pond like area, what a trip. The next day we went back for more , I was trotting down the path to the river ahead of the others and took flying leap into the water , almost immediatly I started to hit the rocks. When I was under I was slamming into rocks , when I was up I would grab a breath. I had rock rash and bruises every where , but all I could think of was "thats the kind thing can kill someone." I would not have minded missing that experience!

Thanks for asking the question WG. Going to get on the ice tomorrow and go fast. I hope to stay on the safe side of the edge.

For me the "one more time" is when I am getting to gassed or mentally fatigued to continue doing what I am doing but I still want to keep going.

I am very cautious when this thought goes through my head b/c I personally think this is when you are most likely to make a mistake that leads to an injury.

It could be a mental miscalculation or a physical "muscle fatigue" that causes a failure but either way I think you are more prone to a mistake during this time.

The dirtbike analogy above is really the best one for me as well. Trying to get in that one last good lap. Trying to hang on physically and not make a mental error. (speed for a jump...etc) I have seen alot of meat wagons (medivacs) landing late in the day at the MX track from guys still putting in laps while the rest of us were packing up.

I fly RC Planes and Helis also, and RC pilots have a general rule to never say "Fly one more time" as it almost always invokes the wrath of the Gods of Groundsuck and then the day generaly ends expensively, with your plane fitting in the car better because its all in a black trash bag.... So we say"Fly Again"...

So we shoud say "Ride again..." :wee:

I like "Fly again". I always say "I'm going flying" or "I went flying". To me it is all about the kites and flying them , the vehicles are the icing on the cake.:wee: Without the kite ,you would be sitting around doin nothing.
