Any Dirsurfers out there?

Hello,

I just picked up a Dirtsurfer and I was curious if anyone here uses one?

I've been having fun reading all the posts - lots of good info!

I'm using an old 10' Flexifoil, but I think I'm ready for something stronger .

Your probably definitely ready for something quad-line. Its just about the only way to go today. A good 3-4 meter is a good place to start. Depending on if you want lift or not, that will make the difference in where to start looking. Whats the end result your after?

Scoop,

I fly a quad-line Revolution Rev II, so I'm OK with four lines. I was thinking of a Blade or Bullet.

From what I've read on this board, a Blade would produce lift and the Bullet would be better for just pulling.

I kind of like the idea of getting airborne with a mountain board or my Dirtsurfer :D

I weigh 170 lbs.

If your good with quads already, and want some lift, I would say start with something like a 4m Blade3 or a 5m Riot from Ozone. My good friend has one. They are a little more calm and well behaved than the blade, not quite as aggressive. Just depends again what you are looking for. Give me a call sometime, we can talk. I love talkin kites.

I use a dirtsurfer with a 3.5 Bullet, but prefer to use it with the Kitewing - far more control, depower and speed.

...sure do, but I'm still practicing that!
with the mountain board I've done 15 foot (distance) jumps - based on the tracks in the sand. Not sure how high as there was nobody watching :-(

oh yeah

i got it from dirtsurfer.com as I could not find anyone locally, and the other 2 sites with good deals that deal with american money ( EPYX mountainboards & Highland Aerosports) had discrepencies between the new advertised flexideck freestyle and old GP specs ( I wasnt CLEAR what I was buying, so though I coulda got free shipping or free deluxe footstraps, I coulda also ended up with a dirtsurfer I wasnt expecting) though I havent checked the sites since I ordered it.

Which one did you go for Kiteboarder? The 16 or 20"?

As for the climbing wall, thats for my 3 yr old son. We also have a small adjustable wall in the garage:

Did you try it behind a kite yet? The DSers are tougher to use than a mountainboard because you have to keep moving to stay upright.

The large turning radius was also a bit tricky – it tended to eat up my small flying field quickly. However, the pros just catch some air at the end of the runs to change direction.

Let us know how it goes.

Check out Foilman's site when you get a chance - great pics/vids of DSers in action. He's been up to 40 mph on it!

well Da Vinch, I've only been out once so far and it was a blaast! It was my first time using a kite as an engine after 2 years of static flying and I was a little nervous. But I was able to ride toeside as I was told to practice that first and thats a little unnerving. I used the 20" pro but have not had a chance to use the kite with the 16". That should be tommorow.

As for the feeling, anyone who flys kite seriously can understand when I say it's like an extension of you. The dirtsurfer is no different. Combine the two and it's like floating 4 inches above the gorund at 20mph! The most amziing felling. I have definitely caught the bug and now plan to make it to NABX

You still have your DS's Da Vinch?
Plan on making it out to NABX?

Hey Kiteboarder,

No - I sold the DS to try out a MBS Core 16. What kite are you using? I flew with handles when I had my DSer and it was tricky going toeside...

I would like to make it to NABX or one of the other gatherings sometime.

nice 1 davinch...

i had a go on a dirtsurfer once, never again!! Scared the crap out of me. waaayyy to fast. I like going upwards more than speeding sideways...

Used to have a kitewing as well which a friend of mine flew with the dirtsurfer...

I'm pretty sure it must make ankle breaking a lot more possible with these buggers though...

They are quite fast.

I'm still not sure which way to go - Core 8 or 16" Dirtsurfer. The MBS is half the price of the DSer.

Da Vinch, Just want to take a moment to say I see you have koined the great forum www.wingsurfer.co.uk Awsemome! It is the most comprehensive dirtsurfer/kitewing forum I've found yet! You will see me there as VegasBoarder.

As you already had a DS you know the flexibility they have. I love being able to hook up with some friends and doing some downhill, even alone (well that's not true, my fiancee drives behind me sometimes.) Actually Aa guy in NYC is outfitting Gp's with electric mototrs. Dont see why they wont work on the 20" pro's. He aso has 16" electric hubs too!

As for the speed you also know speed=stability on the DS. I have hit appox. 40mph downhill and thought it wasnt even 25mph yet.

I found riding toeside with a kite on the DS actually fun and comfortable, not as scary as some have implied.

I guees it's about what you are after. Jumping huge airs will be easier with a MBS (though I cant say from personal experience). Then again you can hit the ramps faster on a DS so it's hard to say.
If speed is your fiend hands down the DS, and at that I'd say the 20". Though huge air is still quite possible on the DS as shown by Foilman (www.mustbemad.com). He is not even using the 16" which weighs 6 lbs. less!
If your wanting to know which dirtsurfer to get (that is if you're not stuck on the 16"), then there's a thread going on the wingsurfer forum comparing rider's opinions on the two. I even stuck my two cents worth in there
http://www.forums.wingsurfer.co.uk/forum_posts.asp?TID=451

For me it was hands down the 'surfer. I debated between the two for a minute and then thought, "F@#$ it, I'm gonna go for it!"
I know I made the right choice. Me and skate trucks dont get along, no matter how big the wheels are.

Oh and last but not least, what is a conventional mountainboard/ATB? A skateboard deck with oversized trucks and tires with bindings. Sorry folks, I might piss off a lot of people with this, but in terms of the "coolness factor" (no that's not why ride!!!) the DS wins again hands down. Strangers who see you ride an ATB say, "Look at that super/monster/huge/etc.. skateboard thing" which is cool in it's own rights, but when I ride around town and whatnot I am get the "WOW look at that!" and "that's SOOOO cool". Sometimes even accosted by a skater mob. Great for promoting the sport
Not to mention that the DS gives the appereance that it's hard to ride, when in fact nothing is further than the the truth. I sucked at skating, did I say suck? I mean I totally BLOW at skateboarding. I've never snowboarded and I just picked up wakeboarding last summer. Yet when I ride I look and feel like pro. What a toy!!!!!

Oh and not to be a thread hog, but if anyone is interested in the Dirtsurfer and would like to give one a go, I will be at NABX with a spare board or two. Anyone who wants a go is more than welcome. Heck if you can't wait 'till then you can even hit me up in 'Vegas. I have a pretty flexible schedule.
