YES THERE ARE!!! They are call Mesojassoides also know as Ivanpausbitusakles. They come to the surface of the lakebed after a light rain. Heavy rains just drown them. They tend to look for warm bodies and can sense fear in animals. You will find them on your shoes from time to time. If they are threaten the will retreat like a Tick. Fortunately, they don't bury themselves in your skin, but the bite just flat out hurts!

Remove socks and shoes when leaving the lakebed to check for them. You don't want them to get into the hotel. Buffalo Bills had a really bad infestation of them back in the late 90's.

On a serious note, there can be Mosquito's if it is a little wetter. So far this year it hasn't been an issue. Still, it may be good to pick up a can of repellent just in case...oh, and there can be horse flies....these things are mutant and can take a chunk of skin out of you if they bite. They are usually rare though.

Other critters:
Rattlesnakes, Scorpions, Tarantula's - all local native animals to the area.

Other critters - the Desert Tortoise. Leave these alone at all costs. Do not touch them, pick them up or bother them in any way. They are an endangered species and it is punishable by law to disturb them in any way.

You hardly ever see any of these critters out on the Playa where you are suppose to be. They're too smart to wander out there and bake in the sun. :) They do stay up in the brush areas - which are restricted to all of us.

Hope that helps

While susan checks out who has the snipe corral and shoot. I do know that they are attracted to pink skirts (at least the male snipe is). So I guess we have to use Dino as bait, or the bag handler.

Just make sure its Deep Woods Off or something along those lines because the stuff you can get at the store there in Primm.... I think it just attracted them more :)
