ancient pyramids built with kite power ?!?

It's a really old article but super interesting if you haven't seen it and truly opens your eyes to the power of wind.

Too kooky to be plausible ... especially when the alternative is so much simpler and I don't mean the zillions of slaves and silly dirt ramps.

Yeah... I got a kite. Or two...

They actually discovered that slaves were net used extensively, they found people that had had serious fracture injuries healed by sophisticated medical tecnique ( something they wouldnt have done for a slave ) and a large ancient deposit of a certain animals bones ( the exact one escapes me at this time ) indicating evedence of a large cookhouse that was cooking tons of meat, enough to feed an army of skilled labourers, ( also something that wouldnt be offered to slaves ). Remember that back then it woud have been considered an honor to work on a religious symbol, again an honor that wouldnt be given to slaves.

The numbers needed though were astronomical to get it done in the time it was erm done in and the ramps needed would have been too large and impractical and would have left signs ... there's some guy who demonstrated how to shift huge blocks of stone with levers and simple stuff like that.
Still prefer the ideas of kites though :D wonder if that's what the ancient Egyptian plane model things was?

no one really knows for sure I supppose, Im sure that there were some slaves involved though. I love the idea that kites were involved, and Its not impossiblle... they recentlly tested a parachute invented by de-vinci and it worked flawlessly, although devinci himself never used it. also not impossilbbe to imagine a whole ton of people who worked around the clock to build these things for their God.

...Recentlly we moved a boiler somewhere around 1500-2000 lbs using a rope ( for the stairs ) plywood and cut lengths of 2" abs pipe... it took 3 guy's to make is safe to do, but One could've done it. The egyptions DID have knowledge of ropes and pullys, so Mechanical Advantage is not ruled out.

if ramps used were made from wood, is it not plausiblle that the wood was burned as fuel after? gets cold at night in the desert. :dunno:

I'm no engineer, but wind just makes so much more sense!
What I am however is a rigger. I work with rope (borderline knot expert) and I build, run, and maintain block & tackle systems for theaters. So here's my perspective.

A drag chute is more plausible to me because of the lines. Hemp Line, when wetted and twisted, becomes almost as strong as today synthetic lines. Also hemp is a nasty fibrous material (for rope) that leaves massive and sometimes debilitating splinters. Now I don't think slaves,if they were, got special treatment but you have to be able to pull the rope. If it was an honor to work on it then that makes more sense for a device to endure the punishment. Then again not everything was logical,at least to us, back then so who knows.

Also, since hemp is most likely the strongest material available back then and for the sake of this thought we'll say it is, line drag is huge. Wet hemp is heavy! A drag chute can still operate with heavy line drag. A kite using lift could work, but to me a chute is more efficient.

However they did it, I would've loved to seen the rigging. Maybe not at the cost of a few floggings though.... Be interesting to see if it was a high compound system with ginormous pulleys (blocks) or less compound for smaller blocks

Still looking for the exact one I'm thinking of but this is the general idea. Messing around with balance.

A little on levers etc ... getting closer. There's a NatGeo spot I'm looking for ...
http://www.fsteiger.com/Pyramid.html

The problem with ramps is there's no evidence of the MASSIVE amounts of dirt needed to complete them - the angle they'd have to be at it pretty shallow so they'd be HUGE by the time they got to the top.
If they used levers etc and a smaller crew on the construction I'd bet they used a bunch more on the quarrying of the stone! Copper chisel - yikes!

I seem to remember that someone else debunked the slave myth too ...

And this is interesting - and would answer many questions!

Oh doh!
