Kite position while jumping on the move????

Seems that I've got things a bit messed up while trying to jump. In the past I've found my best jumps have been static or moving relatively slow. It seems that if I already have the kite sitting close to one or two o'clock then I don't have issues swinging the kite over to 11o'clock then redirecting. I tried to really pop a good jump last time out but found my self swinging way out and the kite going far behind me. End result I landed rather hard and the kite collapsed upwind causing a bit of mess when it drifted back downwind. Was I sending the kite too hard??? I tried pulling the bar to redirect as soon as I started ascending and that seemed to help.

Thanks
shaggs

Mood: They're ALL good ideas. Right up until they become BAD ideas.

I've found that the height, float and amount of redirect is impacted by your travelling speed. If you're moving good you should hardly have to move the kite past 12 o'clock to achieve the desired effect. Keep it there until it's time to come down - in my case, only for a brief moment  - and then send it either back the way you were going or back the other way for a transition. If you leave it overhead you'll land either stopped dead or dragged off forwards.

BUT.....I'm just scratching the surface here in my skill set. Watching Flyjump's teachings of Flyguy tells me there's a way to do it without concern for forward speed......

the wind was nuking the day that i was teaching flyguy0101....... you really don't have to swing it from 10-2 o'clock or you'll most like get the low/fast/far jump which seems to whip people (including myself) around. as your are riding one direction, as soon as you feel the power in your kite while moving edge hard and send the kite to 1 or 11. as soon as it crosses 12 oclock pop that bar down and up you'll go. just remember that it is easier in stronger winds. you don't have to move very fast at all.

at wwbb i was going so hard while riding incredibly slow. it was all kite control in the nuking winds vs. board control. as soon as i get a chance i'm going to make a tutorial for jumping high using ATB. the faster you go, the easier it is to hold a strait line and it is easier to stay upwind of your kite and not crash your kite. the speed can help give you stability so that you dont' go so far downwind.

So its more about getting the kite to pop you up and redirect without moving to far past 12o'clock???? Makes sense cuz the jumps I have landed were from a tight controlled swing instead of a fast wide movement. Just seems like I'm outrunning the kite speed when I'm moving fast. I'll try to get video the next time I'm out so you guys can tell me what I'm doing wrong. Yeah I'd love to see your tutorial Flyjump. I would love to know the control of jumping while cruising. For now I'll stick to slowing down till I get the timing down. Funny last summer I popped a few 4 footers on the board with the 10m synergy in 16-18mph winds from sending the kite hard and fast. But I did land a good ways downwind like you explained.

The synergy situation sounds correct. If you don't have the speed or strong wind you have to throw the kite around more. Cut upwind as you are loading up. This helps avoid that outrunning thing + adds to the pop.

I'm not the best by far at jumping big but for me, I swing the kite back just above midway down the window and then fly the kite up to 12:00 while I continue on in the direction I was travelling and then pull the bar in as the kite approaches the zenith. Makes for less redirecting because the kite is already travelling to your overhead position (but my jumps aren't very big). I suppose there are times when I send it from 11-1 but I don't send it super hard, I send it so I can redirect it up to 12 and get a nice, little hoppy-jump in.
