A buddy of mine has some good video footage, and I want to put it together to make a sick video. He said he would send me the raw footage. First off, how can he send it to me? Wouldn't it be a ridiculously large file and hard to do via email? 2nd, I don't have any video editing software that I am aware of. Is there somewhere I can find a free or cheap editing software?

Depending on how basic you want to go, the newest version of Windows "Live" Movie Maker is pretty good, but only works on Vista and Win7.
I have actually been looking at Adobe Premire/After Affects, Sony Vegas, and the just released yesterday Final Cut Pro (for mac only, which I don't have)
If you are a student you can get the Adobe and Sony very cheap compared to normal price, though there is a much steeper learning curve compared to Windows Movie Maker. I have used all 3 a lot, and have to say, to just bust something out quickly, the new version of Windows program does the job. Much better than older version.

As far as getting the footage to you, the easiest is probably just burning it to a disk and sending it to you. A few years ago a mod team I was on was trying to put together a video demo, and we all started uploading gigs and gigs of footage. I gave up after about 24 hours, and so did everyone else. We ended up just mailing it around. You can use the USPS media/book rate and it is really cheap.

have them upload to hosting site like megauplaod or rapidshare... download it, then just use windows media.. sometimes its a PITA, but it works

you could try using a service like dropbox.com to get you the video.

Or Vimeo. You can have a free membership and have access to the original file for a week (paid members can permanently have access to the original file) before it gets compressed.

Interestingly, Vimeo are really strict on the the content of the video - it must be your own footage, but they won't stop you using any music (they do tell you about copyright infringement and it will be taken down if a complaint is made by the copyright owner). Whereas YouTube seems the opposite - you can upload all sorts of footage but they're really strict on music and if your soundtrack is owned by WMG, then forget it!!

The same as on youtube, you can make any video files private, so only those you send the link to can access it.

Filezilla is a free FTP (file transfer protocol) program.
should let you download direct from another computer , as long as you set it up right.....
