Postage price-jackers

Cheeky buggers ... a US kite company charged me $57 for shipping via email discussions and paypal, but the price USPS printed on the box was $27.

Am tempted to ask for a refund or shall shame them publicly ... I'm sure that'll earn me a bunch more friends on the kiteforum  cos they're a well-known outfit and widely liked by the US contingetn :(

Of course, there may be extenuating circumstances ... a special trip to the P.O. for me cos their "website isn't set up for international sales" ...? No that can't be right cos it allows you to specify shipping outside of the US

Not impressed.

Yeah... I got a kite. Or two...

Holy cats, what did you get Kami? I know the last kite I sent you was about $80 to get it to you so if the got it out for $27 that's pretty wild. Except for the extra charge bit.

Was it a key chain or sumtin?

Actual shipping on the kites I've sent you was only about $15 but I had to hit you up for $65 as a handling fee.:D

You see a lot of that on eBay and stuff out of China. The item is $5 but the shipping charge is $50. :P

Oh, just the new-style fin mount from KiteHero and a GoPro LCD ... no kites unfortunately :(

I thought I'd paid extra just so you WOULDN'T handle the kite, Feyd you perve

Funny, stuffed I've shipped out of China usually has SFA shipping - a couple of bucks usually ... eBay from the US is pretty bad usually, but regular folks are great

Yeah I know sometimes when stuff goes through customs they'll slap a brokerage fee on it, which is about 35$

Eww! Is Ripstop Frot even a real fetish?

No, it wasn't customs fees - I got an email after I'd put in my address and paid that said their website "is not set up for international purchases" and that the cost of post would be $57. I PP'd it directly ... sure the box was put in the post quickly and I got a 'tracking' number (the ones that say "... has been accepted" until the day it arrives  ) but the price printed on the box was $27.50 ...

I'm not so much angry as I am disappointed that people feel the need to do things like that ...

I don't think that's uncommon for retailers that use some off-the-shelf online order entry and shipping system. A similar situation happened to me with a very well know retailer that many of you, I'm sure, have used. I was trying to order a spreader bar pad last year and I'm assuming his instant shipping assessment calculator simply looked at the demensions or weight or something and of the multiple options it presented me (FedEx, USPS, Ground, etc.) the cheapest option was either $12 or $15.

So I called him and said clearly that can't be, you could stick that in a flat rate USPS box and get it to me for under $5 but he said "no" the shipping charges that are auto-calculated are correct.

Fortunately for me I was travelling in OR at the time and happened to be going through the Hood River area and a Google search turned me on to a kite store that had what I was looking for in stock. Bought the pad for roughly the cost of shipping I was told I'd have to pay from this other very well known kite retailer, stuck it in my suitcase and flew home.

So stuff like that happens from who we'd even consider to be one of the better stores around. Course, the right thing to do would be to credit you the differnce between the estimated and total shipping charges or not hit your card until actual charges are calculated. That's kind of why I almost prefer off-line / 2nd hand purchases from known sellers. The price is what it is and if you don't like it, its often easily negotiated to an appropriate and equitable solution for all.
