September 14th.....too soon!
So, I was working away today and felt this warm rush of air. No, not the burritos we had for dinner last night.......it was our FURNACE!
Too soon. Far too soon! It could very well be time for gloves in the buggy and neoprene hoods in the water around here
I guess it's time to think about un-stowing the skis and snowboard.....

My AC doesn't run all day now, so that's some change I guess. We had a high of 76 yesterday and it's a low of 63 with rain for the third day. Odd
desert weather. It was a comfy high 80s on the playa Sunday. I'm lovin' in here.

Oh man and to think it was over +30c last week. To be honest with the fact that I'm not gonna get to the lake this fall, far too busy temps can drop
and snow. I'm so looking forward to this next snowkite season. (unless its -40 all winter again)

Frost! That's the big turning point. Leduc got frost last night or the night before I think - leaves dropped all over the place. I think Edmonton is
still a little shielded from frost thanks to our wind-disturbing heat island effect. Still lots of green leaves out there. Definite chill though.

Speaking of snow, I just learned that Edmonton Actually just recently had its snow dump finally completely melted. Just in time to start all over in

Great find shaggs. Got to feed our "Great White North" image ;-)
Furnace was on in Calgary before I left for SOBB on Sept 1. It is about time to cover the tomato plants at night and put the Fall fertilizer on the
lawn. The bonus is that Fall winds are on their way. YESSSS.
Last year we had to wait until Remembrance Day for black ice on Lac Des Arcs to start the season (a month later than the year before).

the wood stove's been out for half the night...
or even worse when the coffee french press wasn't emptied and is frozen solid right when you need it first thing in the morning :ticking:

I didn't want to point out that the snow had just melted in Edmonton.
I will be in Calgary for a wedding this weekend but it will be all family time.
I have wondered for a while if anybody from Alberta has tried snow kiting Robson glacier or similar locations in the summer ?
We went there one summer to ski when I was young. It should work?

@ mukluk and snowspider- I love the extremes! I lived in Saudi Arabia working for ARAMCO a few years back and it was 126f in the shade with 90%+
humidity and that was just as much fun as a drive through Wyoming in January where it was -12f not counting the wind chill. I wonder why most of my
best friends are either bi-polar or ex-cons?

Or the columbia icefield / snowdome??
Excellent idea...i wonder if there is wind??...the access is going to require some ski mountaineering skills with the crevasses and icefalls..
I would love to pencil this in for next year, but would need to hook up with some glacier travel mentors..?...maybe it's time to join the alpine club
again...

@mukuk - have you ever been up to Fiddle Pass from the Cadomin side? It's high on my list to return to in the winter. Wide open pass with scree slopes
lining both side. The wind MUST just channel through there.

@macboy...haven't made it up there yet, pretty new to the eastern rockies. It's great having new places to explore but sucks not having local
knowledge yet. I am beginning to get to know the Sifflluer, and a bit of the Cline, the Dolomite, and some of the ridges in the Wilmore.
Maybe we should start some scheming?...I have lots of mountain time logged, but no winter mountaineering time...sooo I don't want to push the
avalanche terrain learning curve too hard. In my perfect world I would find some high plateau that's just about at treeline, where the access isn't
too epic and you can sneak in and out without getting in too much avalanche terrain. Oh, and it's windy...
Don't know if this exists here? Fiddle pass? There are the old standbys like Parker Ridge and the Bald Hills...
ps...fiddle river, originally violin river and apparently named so because part of the range sounds like the E string when it's howling out, sounds
good...
