If I rent a car. Can a regular economy car get down the road and out to the playa or do I need something else. You can guess Im trying to go el cheapo.

Go for it, a regular economy car will takeyou there without any problem.
Formy friends I usually reserve with Dolar rental car, directly from their site, there are le cheapest usually. But please do not take my word for it and do some homework before putting up your credit card.

Last year I had a Dodge Neon and had no problems at all at Ivanpah. I cannot say for El Mirage or Superior though....

I remember deano doing a J turn around a parked Cory at a lake bed north of Baker. After being in the back seat with him driving, I'll never buy a rental car.

Rental cars, any rental cars=four wheel drive cars when driven properly!

A ranger once told me he was out in death valley on some jeep trails that he had trouble going through. A guy drove up in a thunderbird.
