Anyone in metro Atlanta?

Hi, I'm new to power kiting, and looking for some people in the metro Atlanta area. (I'm in Marietta)

I fly a PL twister IIr 5.6m, and am just looking for some fellow enthusiasts, and some good spots to fly.

I am new to the sport so I'd love to learn anything anyone is willing to share, and to meet some other folks who are into it.

Is there anywhere within an hour or two of north Atlanta to buggy? That seems like something I'd like to try.

Welcome welcome you came to the right place just give everyone some time and you will find someone in the area. Nice first kite by the way. I didn't think i would like to buggy. I thought I would stick with kite jumping wrong way wrong. Once you try a buggy you almost never let go of it. And once more welcome to the addiction.

You need to head over to Jeckyll Island and hook up with Angus Campell. He runs Coastal Wind Sports and will get you sorted in a buggy no problem...
Good luck and Welcome !!!

I've already exchanged email with Angus, he recommended I come here! He seems like a great helpful guy. My family always makes a trip down to St Simons every spring, so I'll try to hook up with him then... At least that's the plan.

I'd like to fly with some people here in the area. Is there anyone that buggy's any closer to Atlanta than Jekyll? It seems like there should be some good terrain in north Georgia in the foothills or something??

Yes, the Aiken Kite Club has OOBE field which is a multi acre polo practice farm with wide open spaces to buggy or landboard. Pokite is an awesome guy. He has the patience to help you along, shares well, and plays well with others. It's worth the drive over. I used to live in Augusta and that was my prime riding spot for local afternoon rides.

Hey there soliver,

I am new also, and am in Charlotte NC... the more i see of this hobby (some call it a sport, and the more I do it, my muscles can confirm its a sport), the more I am interested in the buggy aspect. Landboards look like a lot more skill and work involved.

I would love to meet up with you when you go down to Aiken or maybe even if you end up going to the coast where Angus is.

I have two kites now btw, one is a 3.3 m Flexifoil Sting trainer, and the other is a 5M HQ Crossfire2 which is in the mail.

Keep in touch.

James

I looked up Aiken, SC on mapquest, and unfortunately, where I am in metro Atlanta, it's 3+ hours to Aiken. It sounds like it might be a great day trip, but not such an easy drive.

I'll try to U2U Pokite and see what he says.

I'll try to get with Kitedog too.

Is anyone else in ATL?? especially north of the city?

I'd love to meet someone who buggy's closer than SC if at all possible.

Thanks much!

Any chance you can get on Dobbins AFB? The field(kind of bowl shaped) at the NW end of the runway, surrounded by Atlantic Ave. SE, and 7th St. looks like it has potential, esp. with a SE wind.

I live about 5 minutes from dobbins, but I think they only allow Military personnel on their property.

I've got a nice spot in east cobb I use. esp with eastern or western wind. I'll be there tomorrow (saturday) around 12:30. Let me know if you're interested.

I totally busted arse today, but I learned three new things:

1. Purchase and wear a strap for my glasses
2. wear a knee brace on the knee I dislocated a few years back
3. My kite is too big for 17mph gusts and my miniscule experience level.

Icing the knee will feel good... Ibuprofen is my friend

 I had a similar learning curve trying to teach myself! I figured each time I came back with no bones on the outside was a success.

My learning sessions (all of them still are...) are pretty much more and more knowledge and finesse accidently gained along with less pain inflicted.

Keep it up, soon you'll be able to fly the kite without looking at it (something you should really work towards as a goal) and then you'll be more ready for buggying and other butt busting traction types!

thanks for the encouragement, Pokite, its much appreciated!

I read Scoopy's post for newbies and found it very helpful. Perhaps I should have read it a month ago,... Hind sight is 20/20 eh!

I really think I want to get a smaller kite for higher winds. I need to convince wifey that I NEEEED a 3m beamer V.... Hmmmmm.

I have gotten to where I can take my eyes off the kite for a few seconds, but probably not what you mean,... I'll keep up the practice (in lighter winds though)

Soliver,

I attend Georgia Tech and because I don't have a car I unfortunately haven't been able to get any kiting done around there. I won't be back there 'til summer (does anyone fly up near Cincinnati?) but I should be able to convince some friends to give me a ride if there are any fields nearby.
