Yet another kite selection question

In an effort to limit my quiver size, I'm going to be doing some landboarding with an 8m Ocean Rodeo Rise. I'm 195 lbs and most of my riding would be on the beach.

What is the wind range likely to be for me on land with this kite (beginner rider)?

I'm also thinking of a smaller depower for higher winds than would be comfortable on the Rise (though I don't yet know what this level is) like an Access. At my weight and with the Rise in mind, would I be getting more use out of a 4 meter or 6 meter access?

Thanks a lot all.

Statistic, not sure on the Ocean Rodeo's wind range, (not and LEI kinda guy) . If you are looking for a higher wind kite for inland flying, also check out the HQ Apex III. The 5m will start producing useable power at 15mph and carry you out to about 25mph. JMO

My landboarding/snowkite high wind is Slingshot Octane 5m, have taken it up to 30mph winds on land...after that it's a bit too fast in the window to have much fun!

Land wind-ranges can be stepped down a fair bit from water wind ranges, resistance is much lower on hardpack. My favorite kite for ATB is my Rev 9m, I would imagine You're going to be having a good time with the OR Rise8 approx 12-21mph of wind at first, perhaps 10-27mph wind once you get a bit more experienced. A very quick google didn't find me the rise's recommended wind(not even on OR's site!), so that's kind of a guess.

Tide? What's a tide? Man, it's 1000 miles to any ocean.

Thanks a lot guys - helpful info. Sounds like the 6 would have fairly significant overlap with the Rise. Perhaps a 4 is the way to go when the time comes

There are a couple of guys that have OR kites on here that might chime in. Lots of guys fly the OR Rise in my area..they have a good reputation for an excellent wind range. Almost bought one myself not too long ago, but my quiver change up had to be postponed.

Do you have a fairly good idea of your common wind ranges? I don't ride sand and it would completely depend on your winds, but I would be thinking go up in size first, rather than down, especially if you are eventually thinking about getting into more powered up riding and jumping. Maybe some more beach experienced guys can recommend whether to go up or down.

at your weight the 8m OR is gonna do fine to start.

in light air around 10, it will cruise easy but fly deeper in the window because of your weight. this makes for a PUNCHY side pull to make good speed, keep the unit hi and stay balanced through the hips and legs, good start for sure.

in light air the kite will need decent action to stay up and feel powered. speed control with the kite will help you find the parts of the wind that are forgiving and controllable.

The 8m Rise should be a good place to start.

Don't be rushing to buy a smaller kite. Not if you want to keep the quiver small. You will want larger for water. 8m will take you into some very high winds once you are on top of it.

When winds are too strong for 8m depower I am ready to go to my trusty 2.5m Profoil FB. A good quality trainer will pull double duty as a high wind kite + teaching others.

Kites: 2.5m Profoil , Quadrifoil XL kitesurfer, NPW 5 Danger.
Flexifoil: 1.7m Sting, 4.9m Blade 3, 9m Blade 2.
Flysurfer : 19m Speed 2 SA, 7m Pulse
Peter Lynn :18m Phantom, 15m Synergy, 10m Synergy, 1200 Farc, 460 Sarc, 130 Tarc, 5m Peel, 4.2m , 6.4, 8.5 C-Quads, 3.5 LS2 single skin.

Rides: Flexi / P.L. Frankin'Buggy , Shaped + straight skiis, sand skis, Coyote blades. Core 95 ATB. RKB R2 ATB .
